Why Business Digitalization Is Still So Risky

Due to rapid IT advances and escalated globalization, business digitalization has been accelerating. However, the average success rate of such endevors remains low. As an attempt to reveal why the digital transformation of a business is still so risky, this research analyzes how commonly encountered risks in IS projects are responded to and how the responses affect project outcomes. Resulting from the authors' previous work, they hypothesize that information systems are much more complex as they play an increasingly pivotal role in executing most business functions, and subsequently, the risk pattern of IS projects may have evolved, and that as businesses keep adding more information systems to the enterprise infrastructure, rather than via a piecemeal approach, a framework for enterprise-wide digital integration must be established to guide and evaluate business digitalization. The finding from this research should largely validate their hypotheses and allow them to call for a refocus of the efforts on digitalizing an enterprise.

Accurately obtaining the posture and spatial position of tea buds through machine vision and other technologies is difficult due to the small size, different shapes, and complex growth environment of tea buds. Therefore, end effectors are prone to problems, such as picking omission and picking error. This study designs a picking end effector based on negative pressure guidance for famous tea. This end effector uses negative pressure to guide tea buds in a top-down manner, thereby correcting their posture and spatial position. Therefore, the designed end effector has deviation tolerance performance that can improve the picking success rate. The pre-experiment is designed, the tip of apical bud is referred to as the descent position, and the negative pressure range is determined to be 0.6 to 0.9 kPa. A deviation tolerance orthogonal experiment is designed. Experimental results show that various experimental factors are ranked in terms of the significance level of the effect on the average success rate, and the significance ranking is as follows: negative pressure (P) > pipe diameter (D) > descent speed (V). An evaluation method of deviation tolerance performance is presented, and the optimal experiment factor-level combination is determined as: P = 0.9 kPa, D = 34 mm, V = 20 mm/s. Within the deviation range of a 10 mm radius, the average success rate of the negative pressure guidance of the end effector is 97.36%. The designed end effector can be applied to the intelligent picking of famous tea. This study can provide a reference for the design of similar picking end effectors for famous tea.

The article analyzes the contradictory impact of digitalization on the development of the economy and society. It is argued that the process of digital transformation of business has led to the emergence of new threats, which include the following types of risks: the risk of violating the confidentiality of information, cybersecurity of information systems, the risk of losing control over information flows; the risk of damage to reputation and brand by social media; the risk of a "gap" in HR potential associated with limited staff competencies (or lack thereof) in the field of digitalization.

As part of the digital transformation of various areas of human activity, the urgent task is to transform existing business processes (BP) in order to increase their variability according to the needs of the customer, to increase productivity, quality and competitiveness of products. The introduction of end-to-end digital technologies allows for this. The article examines the experience of transforming the BP of experimental research in solving a number of applied tasks in the field of electronic instrumentation, which is obtained as a result of the introduction of operation technology for test, research and laboratory equipment based on the concept of multitenancy. Developed on the basis of the experience of the authors, a number of industrial samples and prototype multiuser distributed measurement-control systems implementing this concept have allowed to transform the following processes: end-to-end BP of tests on-board electronic equipment of spacecraft (communications, relay, navigation, geodesy, remote sensing, etc.); BP of forming the operational load of the spacecraft's on-board relay complex; BP of conducting experimental laboratory research in the industry training system. The effectiveness of modernized BP was evaluated on the basis of their formalized models and a set of qualitative indicators. The key resulting effects of transformation: improving the quality of BP by improving the informativeness of individual business functions and the efficiency of the use of high-tech experimental equipment; reducing the number of gaps in BP by reducing the number of business roles involved in their implementation; reducing the duration of BP by significantly reducing material and time costs and improving the productivity of individual business functions; transition to a service model "Laboratory As Service" for access to high-tech equipment while performing experimental laboratory studies based on digital educational environments.

The aim of this study was to investigate the results of different treatment strategies for osteochondral defects (OCD) of the talus. Electronic databases from 1966 to July 1998 were systematically screened. Based on our inclusion criteria 32 studies describing the results of treatment strategies for OCD of the talus were included. No randomized clinical trials (RCT's) were identified. Fourteen studies described the results of excision alone, 11 the results of (EC), 14 the results of (ECD), 1 the results of cancellous bone grafting after EC, 1 the results of osteochondral transplantation and 3 the results of fixation. The average success rate of non-operative treatment (NT) was 45%. Comparison of different surgical procedures shows that the average highest success rate was reached by excision, curettage and drilling (ECD) (85%) followed by excision and curettage (EC) (78%) and excision alone (38%). Based on this systematic review we conclude that NT and excision alone are not to be recommended in treating talar OCD. Both EC and ECD have been shown to lead to a high percentage good/excellent results. However, due to great diversity in the articles and variability in treatment results, no definitive conclusions can be drawn. Further prospective randomized controlled trials are required to compare the outcome of these two surgical strategies for OCD of the talus.

This study of international information systems (IS) offshoring highlights the idea that project success or failure is often in the eye of the beholder and that proper attention needs to be provided to both client and vendor perspectives. This research contributes by identifying noteworthy IS offshoring challenges faced by client and vendor stakeholders. This research synthesizes key findings from eight dyadic case studies consisting of 56 interviews in total from both client and vendor firms detailing their offshore experiences. The case investigations lead to the discovery of nine unique challenges encountered by client and vendor stakeholders. The challenges include a wide assortment of economic, personal responsibilities/expectations, and organizational offshore project management issues. The reported challenges can suitably guide client and vendor project managers in managing international IS offshore projects as well guide academic researchers to better understand techniques for managing offshore IS projects.

Organizations are increasingly dependent on information systems, and they invest dearly on systems to integrate disparate business functions, automate business processes, and support operations in order to sustain business and survive in a competition-intensive business environment. However, such systems have in many occasions failed fully or partially. The lack of “fit-to purpose” seems to be the common factor among most of the failed cases. This suggests that such systems are not selected, implemented, configured, or supported based on a proper analysis and understanding of the organization structure and hierarchy, business functions, business processes, and business environment. Evidently, the majority of organizations tend to emphasize system specifications that match their operational and tactical requirements, with little attention given to strategic requirements, culminating in issues with strategic planning and decision making. This chapter uses a survey and simple model based on the characteristics and competitiveness indicators of strategic information systems (SIS) to examine the impact of such systems on the business performance in 16 medium to large Arab organizations. The study concludes with an emphasis of the importance of SIS to help organizations achieve excellence and competitive advantage and realize business objectives and goals.

Responding to the rapidly growing market share for Information Systems (IS) based on Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), the demand emerges for methods of measuring the value of SOA-based IS projects. The goal of the present research is to adapt available methods of project assessment to this expanding demand. This study describes a new method which takes into consideration a possibility to divide deployment and evolution of SOA-based IS into separate flows, one per service. Like that the process of value assessment could become more precise and exact compared to other known methods which use the single flow for the whole project. In addition the work proposes Real Options for calculating such components of the value as flexibility. The described method is validated using a specific simulation model. Value assessment of a real IS project is performed using the developed method and the simulation model.

The effect of user participation on system success is one of the most studied topics in information systems, yet still yields inconclusive results. Contingency-based concepts attempt to resolve this issue by providing a plausible explanation which indicates that users can only generate expected results when there is a need for users to participate in the development process. As a different approach, this study adopts a mediating perspective and asserts that influence due to the effectiveness of participation determines the final outcomes. Based on control theory, and viewing user participation in reviews as one kind of control, we propose that the influence users can generate through participation determines project outcomes. Data collected from 151 information systems personnel confirms the relationships and that an ability to achieve quality interactions among developers and users heightens the achievement of user influence.
