In recent years, complex systems have been encountered in all areas of life. Understanding the processes and components of such complex systems as a whole is increasingly becoming a critical skill. In order to handle such complex systems that we might encounter in daily life, it is essential to develop systematic thinkingskills. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to explore the effect of such systematic thinking skills on performance and concept learning of middle school students while teaching complex concepts and to observe which steps of systematic thinking has been improved. In this study, pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental design was used. The study was conducted with 8th-grade students who receive education in Istanbul. The control group consisted of 40 students while experimental group had 38 students.  Four subject areas are chosen from living beings and energy connections unit in eight-grade level science and technology course for this research, including food chain, photosynthesis, respiration, and cycles (e.g. water, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen). These subject areas have been taught to the experimental group with activities prepared in regard to systematic thinking hierarchy by the researchers, whereas researchers just used the activities in the textbook with the control group.  In order to collect data, both experimental and control groups were given Systematic Thinking Achievement Test as a pre- and post-test. Reliability and validity of the achievement test were evaluated, and accordingly, feedback was received from the experts in this field to attain higher validity. Eventually, Cronbach Alpha value for the achievement test is found around 0.74. This study indicates that activities based on the systematic thinking hierarchy on the topics listed here have relatively more contributions to student success and conceptual learning when compared to those of current science curriculum. The implications of the study provide teachers, researchers and curriculum designers with guidance and suggestions. ÖzetSon yıllarda kompleks sistemlerle hayatın her alanında sıklıkla karşılaşılmaktadır. AbstractThis study investigates the effectiveness of the reflection-based reciprocal teaching (RBRT) approach for Myanmar upper secondary school students’ reading comprehension in English. In the RBRT approach, the main frame is based on the reflective teaching model for reading comprehension (Oo and Habók in Int Electron J Elementary Educ 13(1):127–138, 2020), in which the reciprocal teaching method (involving questioning, clarifying, summarizing, and predicting) was applied. This study used cluster randomized trials. Two groups participated in the research: the experimental group, who were taught with the RBRT approach, and the control group, who were taught with traditional methods. Results showed that the RBRT approach has a strong effect on students’ English reading comprehension achievement. The experimental group increased its achievement on the posttest significantly, and the students’ results showed high effect size. It was also found that teachers’ reflection on the instructional context had a considerable impact on raising students’ reading comprehension achievement. The RBRT approach can be successfully applied in the classroom environment to develop students’ reading comprehension in English in Myanmar.

Cyber bullying is the unwise use of technology to harm and humiliate an individual or group over the Internet. The purpose of this article is to test the effectiveness of the cyber bullying sensitisation program (CBSP) to reduce the level of cyber bullying behaviour among middle school students. The sample was restricted to adolescents as they are the ones who are most exposed and vulnerable in the cyber space. A quasi-experimental pre-post design with intervention was adopted for the study. The participants of the study were comprised of 186 middle school students from two private schools in India. The experimental group had 94 participants while control groups had 92 participants. Statistical analysis indicated that there was a significant difference between pre- and post-test scores in the experimental group. No significant difference was found between the experiment and control group before the program, suggesting that the program was effective in helping students in reducing cyber bullying behaviour. The implications for prevention and intervention programs were discussed.

AbstractThe study investigated the effect of two cooperative learning strategies, Student Teams-Achievement Divisions (STAD) and Think-Pair-Share (TPS) on senior secondary school students’ achievement in reading comprehension in Vandeikya Local Government Area, Benue State, Nigeria. A total of 78 students (43 males and 35 females), drawn from three secondary schools participated in the study. Experimental and control conditions were randomly assigned to the three intact classes: EG1 (STAD), EG2 (TPS) and CG (Control Group). The instrument used was Reading Comprehension Achievement Test (r=0.784). Data were analyzed using Mean, Standard Deviation and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The results show higher achievement gains for students in the EG1 and EG2 over those of the CG, but not across gender. The findings support the existing evidence on the efficacy of cooperative learning over the traditional teaching method. English language teachers will therefore find the two techniques useful in teaching reading comprehension.   Keywords: cooperative learning, Student Teams-Achievement Divisions, Think-Pair-Share, academic achievement, reading comprehension

Main problem: The article examines the issues concerning teaching reading skills to the middle school students according to the updated program. Purpose: The article analyses the course book “Excel” for 7th grade students on teaching reading skills. Methods: The criteria of analyzing the course book contain the forms of text presentation, types and situations modeled by the text, compliance with the level of English proficiency, age of students, information content, and accessibility. It also includes assessment of course book texts for the development of reading for general understanding of information (skimming), for identifying details (scanning) and reading with full comprehension, as well as for the different types of tasks for reading. Results and their significance: The texts in the course book correspond to the age characteristics of adolescents, the level of English language proficiency (A2) and are developed according to the standard curriculum. The most popular forms of text presentation are popular science texts and information about public events. The situations in the texts are dominated by educational, most of all the mixed type of text prevailed. There is a balance for the types of tasks developing reading for general understanding and reading for identifying details which leads to the development of functional reading literacy. The types of reading tasks used are quite diverse and contribute the development of communicative skills (pair work, group work, etc.). The misbalance of tasks on developing low order and high order thinking skills can be solved through adding some tasks developing HOTS.
