Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are an ad hoc network consisting of miniaturized autonomous sensors that communicate with each other over a radio link. In this paper, the authors' contribution is a cross-layer approach. To achieve this approach, the authors proposed in the first part an improvement of LEACH algorithm named WEIGHTED_LEACH. This algorithm is an enhancement of LEACH by inserting novel factors in the threshold equation in order to choose the best node to be CH by competitiveness strategy. In the second part, the authors propose a new adaptable cross-layer design realized by proposed algorithm and AODV protocol with cross layer interaction algorithm. This is an improvement by the control of data fusion in the network using multi-hop routing based on weight metric deducts from relative parameters of node such RSSI, SINR, residual energy, and distance. A comparative analysis between WEIGHTED_LEACH and LEACH, shown for different configurations the efficiency of the proposition in terms of energy saving and life time of WSN cluster, are evaluate under the NS2 simulator.

In this paper, Cross-layer design has been used to provide quality of service (QoS) and security at the same time for VOIP over the wireless ad-hoc network. In this paper the authors extend their previous work (i.e. Multi-path Multi-Channel Protocol Design for Secure QoS-Aware VOIP in Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks) by adding transport and application layers considerations. The goal of this paper is to support QoS and security of VOIP simultaneously. Simulation results shows that the proposed cross-layered protocol stack design significantly improve QoS parameters of the VOIP calls under the jamming or Denial-of-service attacks.

A wireless ad hoc network is a self-configuring infrastructurelessh network of mobile devices connected by wireless. In order to support the basal networking functions like routing and packet forwarding, the nodes in wireless ad hoc network should be cooperate with each other due to the limited range of wireless transmission. However, nodes are unwilling to relay packets for others considering the poor energy and bandwidth especially in the open community environment. Some approaches to stimulate nodes cooperation have been introduced recently. In this paper, we provide a novel method based on cross-layer design to solve the cooperation issues both in Mac and network layer. The method with the help of reputation mechanism and utility function based on game theoretical approach can promote nodes to cooperate and make the whole network to reach Nash equilibrium.
