An Engineering Approach for Online Learning

The design and development of effective online courses for distance learning is a complex process involving many forms of expertise. Several disciplines such as instructional design theories, software engineering principles, human-computer interaction and multimedia are involved. It is not always feasible for a novice to be familiar with such a range of expertise. A methodology integrating all of these various disciplines is urgently needed. The Courseware Engineering Methodology (CME) has been developed by the author to guide novices to design effective online courses, based on the integration of the various disciplines. CEM has been used successfully by over 70 students at a UK university to develop their online courses in the last few years. This paper describes the CEM development process. The CEM process consists of four models. The pedagogical model is concerned with the pedagogical aspects of the course; the conceptual model, dealing with the software engineering aspects of the design; the interface model relating to the interface of the course, and the Web modelling that deals with the Web useability and navigation issues of the course. Each of the nodels will be briefly reviewed. Design principles concerning both the pedagogical and interface models will be further discussed. The paper concludes by stating the benefits of using an engineering approach to online development and reuse.

The mostly “creative” authoring process used to develop many Web applications during the last years has already proven unsuccessful to tackle, with its increasing complexity, both in terms of user and technical requirements. This fact has nurtured a mushrooming of proposals, most based on conceptual models, that aim at facilitating the development, maintenance and assessment of Web applications, thus improving the reliability of the Web development process. In this chapter, we will show how traditional software engineering approaches can be extended to deal with the Web idiosyncrasy, taking advantage of proven successful notation and techniques for common tasks, while adding models and constructs needed to capture the nuances of the Web environment. In this context, our proposal, the Object-Oriented Hypermedia (OO-H) Method, developed at University of Alicante, provides a set of new views that extend UML to provide a Web interface model. A code generation process is able to, departing from such diagrams and their associated tagged values, generate a Web interface capable of connecting to underlying business modules.

This study aimed to examine the bibliometric results (co-authorship, citation, co-occurrence, bibliographic coupling, and co-citation) of publications in the field of instructional design. The study includes the publications in the database of the Web of Science in the period between 1975 and 2019. It was found through co-authorship analysis that 9,344 authors who had written in the field of instructional design functioned as co-authors and had links. There were studies on an instructional design from 103 different countries. It was also found that keywords such as e-learning and online learning were frequently used and that the studies published in recent years prioritized the keywords of the massive open online courses, mobile learning, flipped classroom, gamification, and augmented reality. While the most published authors were F. Paas and J. van Merrienboer in the field, the author who was the most cited was J. Sweller.

Despite the ubiquitous use of instructional videos in both formal and informal learning settings, questions remain largely unanswered on how to design and develop video lessons that are often used as the primary method for delivering instruction in online courses. In this study, we experimented with a model of seven principles drawn from instructional design theories for designing and developing video lessons for an online graduate course. Feedback was collected from students through surveys on their perceptions of the effectiveness of the video lessons and the overall course quality for eight semesters. This paper shares the instructors’ experience on the design and development of the video lessons as well as the survey findings. Implications of the findings for instructional design and future research are also discussed.

A mechanism is presented to construct an enterprise process by integrating component processes. This approach supports the formation of value-added chains based on process models. Process representations in logical as well as physical levels are offered in a hierarchy as a graphical tool to support process integration. An enterprise represents a complex process that needs to be constructed within an engineering approach. Such construction is a matter of integration if component processes are made available by smaller enterprises. Process integration is supported by task-system formalism that may especially prove useful in the analysis of the preservation of process attributes during integration. Approaches using the decomposition of the problem definition have matured for various engineering disciplines in an effort to match definition pieces with previously built sub solutions. Among these disciplines, the techniques used in software engineering are exploited as this domain is closer to business process construction than the others.

Though online enrollments continue to accelerate at a rapid pace, there is significant concern over student retention. With drop rates significantly higher than in face-to-face classes it is imperative that online providers develop an understanding of factors that lead students to disenroll. This study examines course-level disenrollment through the lens of student satisfaction with the projection of Teaching, Social and Cognitive Presence. In comparing the highest and lowest disenrollment quartiles of all courses at American Public University the value of effective Instructional Design and Organization, and initiation of the Triggering Event phase of Cognitive Presence were found to be significant predictors of student satisfaction in the lowest disenrollment quartile. For the highest disenrollment quartile, the lack of follow-through vis-à-vis Facilitation of Discourse and Cognitive Integration were found to be negative predictors of student satisfaction.

The problem of introducing distance learning in primary school is actualized by the development of social networks and Internet technologies, which open unlimited horizons for their application in educational activities. In addition, the introduction of quarantine in Ukraine requires primary school teachers to find ways to effectively master the program material. Among such ways is distance learning. The purpose of the study is to substantiate the specifics and possibilities of organizing the educational process in primary school with the use of distance learning. In the process of scientific research methods of analysis, synthesis, generalization and systematization were used. Distance learning in primary school is defined as a form of organization and implementation of the educational process, in which the subjects of learning (teachers and students) in the online mode carry out educational interaction in principle and mainly extraterritorially. In the context of reforming modern Ukrainian education, a number of e-platforms have been created for the organization of distance learning for primary school students. An effective commercial platform for distance learning is the service "My Class", which contains online courses from 1st to 11th grade, which contain lessons that integrate theoretical (test presentation of content) and practical (individual tasks that can be solved independently of each other, a block of tasks that need to be solved sequentially, guidelines) blocks. Result. Emphasis is placed on the requirements to be met by a primary school teacher when organizing distance learning in primary school during the quarantine period and it is suggested to advise parents who will work remotely with junior students in the initial stages of distance learning, gradually transferring activity to children.

Purpose As the global paradigm in economics shifts, Islamic economics is attracting more attention as an alternative sector. The most common and most active institutional structure of Islamic economics is in the form of Islamic finance and banking. Islamic finance and banking have been the centre of innovation in many economies in recent years. In this regard, product development is a vital element in driving the success of Islamic financial institutions (IFIs). The product development of IFIs is one of the key elements of their overall economic performance. This study aims to fill the gap in the literature concerning the product development process of IFIs in secular economies. Design/methodology/approach Verily, product development is a complex process; it is likely that introducing specific models will be useful for expanding the activities of IFIs. In this study, contemporary source materials are used to develop this conceptual research. Findings It suggests two separate methodologies for the product development process of IFIs in secular economies to overhaul two criticised product-based problems. To the best of the author’s knowledge, it is the first attempt to model the product development process for IFIs in a secular economic setup. Originality/value Recently, this study is the first attempt for modelling product development in IFIs under secular economies. Advances in the field of Shari’ah-compliant product development is important for researchers and professional.
