The construction industry has been known as the most fatal industries worldwide. Accident affects varies parties involving direct and indirect costs to the contractor and clients as well. The construction safety measures in the current practice often begin during the construction phase rather than at the earliest stages possible. Design for Construction Safety (DfCS) is a process to reduce the hazards and risks during construction by focussing on design decision at the design phase. This concept implementation is new and has yet to be adapted worldwide. With every new culture comes with a set of list to overcome. The top barriers stated by past researchers are lack of knowledge and education followed by increased of liability and the nature of the industry. The initial step to be taken is to adapt this concept in the universities and college level during the designers’ formal education. By mastering this subject, the designers will become more confidence with new found skills while their attitudes towards safety will have a huge impact on workforce safety by eliminating hazards on site.

This article presents the life histories of two “nontraditional” college students—Demetrius and Christine—as a means to explore the concept of “outsiderness” and its impact on undergraduate student success. Through multiple interviews and observations conducted over the course of a full year, the article first outlines the life circumstances that compelled both students to leave formal education during adolescence. Then, the article details how Demetrius and Christine managed to return to college despite formidable personal and financial challenges. Although both students demonstrate tremendous promise in their college-level coursework, they are wary of their own college readiness, primarily due to their “nontraditional” educational trajectories and a lack of clarity about instructors’ expectations. Hence, the article concludes by considering the forms of support that might help similar nontraditional students succeed in first-year coursework, and eventually graduate from college.

Abstract Zainuddin Labay al-Yunusiyyah was one of the Islah Minangkabau scholar that play a huge role in the Islah Islamic thought and Islamic education reformation. Even though his education background is informal and was only received in the Minangkabau region, he can be regarded as an exemplary scholar that is very progressive and can be regarded highly with other Islah scholars. His biggest contribution that gives a huge impact towards the Muslim Minangkabau community is the Islamic education reformation with modern orientation. This model of modern Islamic education Institution that was introduced by Zainuddin Labay al-Yunusiyah became a prime example to the establishment of other Islamic education institution. Thus, this research will study the Islah movement in Minagkabau and the biography of Zainuddin Labay al-Yunusiyyah. In addition, the objective of this research is to analyse his role regarding the thought purification and Islamic education reformation in Indonesia.This research is a qualitative research that utilizes the content analysis as the research design with the use of historical research method.The finding of this research shows that Zainuddin Labay al-Yunusiyyah was one of the Islah scholars from the 20th century. Even though he did not receive a formal education and only receive his education in Minangkabau, he emerge as one of the reformation figure of Islah that have a huge impact to the Islah movement in Minangkabau especially the Islamic education reformation and also the Islah of Islamic thought in Minangkabau. The Islamic education reformation that has been done by Zainuddin Labay al-Yunusiyyah become the foundation and model of the Islamic education reformation in whole of Minangkabau and Indonesia. Walaupun beliau mempunyai latar belakang pendidikan yang tidak teratur dan hanya belajar dalam wilayah Minangkabau, namun beliau merupakan seorang tokoh ulama yang begitu progresif dan mampu menyamai tokoh-tokoh islah terkemuka yang lain. Sumbangan terbesar beliau yang memberi impak besar kepada umat Islam Minangkabau ialah pembaharuan pendidikan Islam berorientasikan moden. Model institusi pendidikan Islam moden yang diperkenalkan oleh Zainuddin Labay al-Yunusiyyah menjadi contoh kepada penubuhan institusi pendidikan Islam yang lain. Justeru, kajian ini meneliti gerakan islah di Minangkabau dan biografi Zainuddin Labay al-Yunusiyyah. Selain itu, objektif kajian ini juga menganalisis peranan beliau terhadap pemurnian pemikiran dan pembaharuan pendidikan Islam di Indonesia. Kajian ini merupakan kajian yang berbentuk kualitatif menggunakan analisis kandungan sebagai reka bentuk kajian dengan menggunakan metode kajian sejarah. Hasil kajian mendapati Zainuddin Labay al-Yunusiyyah merupakan seorang daripada ulama islah abad ke-20. Walaupun beliau tidak mendapat pendidikan yang sistematik dan hanya belajar di Minangkabau sahaja, beliau mampu muncul sebagai tokoh pembaharu dan islah yang memberi impak besar kepada gerakan islah di Minangkabau terutamanya reformasi pendidikan Islam dan juga islah pemikiran Islam di Minangkabau. Pembaharuan pendidikan Islam yang dilakukan oleh Zainuddin Labay al-Yunusiyyah menjadi asas dan model kepada pembaharuan pendidikan Islam di seluruh Minangkabau dan juga Indonesia. PurposeThe self-cleaning properties of nanostructured titanium dioxide facade coatings are useful in Singapore's tropical climate. However, its potential maintenance issues need to be determined right at the design stage. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the development of the design for maintainability tool which is a multicriteria design decision score sheet that evaluates the maintainability potential of nano-facade coating applications on high-rise façades with concrete and stonemasonry finishes and curtain walls.Design/methodology/approachQuantitative methods (expert and practitioner surveys) are conducted in this research study. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and sensitivity analysis were used to develop a robust Design for Maintainability tool.FindingsSafety measures indicator received the highest weighted score by experts, while the maximizing performance, minimizing risk, minimizing negative environmental impact and minimizing consumption of matter and energy were the top ranking main criteria by both experts and practitioners. The top ranked design for maintainability sub-criteria identified by practitioners and experts were risk management, maintenance considerations, climatic conditions, safety measures, lifecycle cost and maintenance access, sun's path, rainfall intensity, biological growth measures and building age profile.Originality/valueMost researches on the maintainability of nano-façade coatings uses experimentation to test the durability of nano-façade coatings, while this study focuses on design based empirical data such as establishing and ranking the list of design for maintainability criteria or indicators to minimize future defects and maintenance issues. The design for maintainability tool contributes to the maintainability of nano-façade coatings leading to maximizing its performance while minimizing cost, risks, resource consumption and negative environmental impact.

As defined by the American Council on Education (ACE), prior learning is learning gained outside the college classroom in a variety of settings and through formal and non-formal means, including workplace training, military training and service, independent study, professional certifications, civic activities, or volunteer service. These learning experiences may be equivalent to college-level skills and knowledge and warrant academic credit. Although this definition was coined many years ago, the definition and purpose of prior learning assessment are more pertinent given the changing educational landscape. Today, the proliferation of online and digital learning has opened endless opportunities for learners. With a few clicks on any device, learners can find an immediate solution to their knowledge gap. This increased learning that is occurring outside the walls of formal education increases the need on the assessment process; hence, the growing emphasis on prior learning assessment.

Workers’ wellbeing and safety is important in the construction industry due to the high risk of accidents. Safety climate development is a positive initial step toward raising the safety levels of construction practitioners. This study aims at revealing the factors influencing safety climate perceptions in the construction industry of Saudi Arabia. A set of extracted factors from the literature was validated and used to design a comprehensive questionnaire survey. Data was collected from 401 personnel working on 3 large construction project sites in Saudi Arabia. Descriptive statistics and the crosstabulation algorithm, Kendall’s tau-b correlation test, were used to analyze the data. The study revealed a set of 13 factors influencing safety climate perceptions, which are: Supervision, guidance and inspection, appraisal of risks and hazards, social security and health insurance, workmate influences, management safety justice, management commitment to safety, education and training, communication, workers’ safety commitment, workers’ attitude toward health and safety, workers’ involvement, supportive environment, and competence. The results also indicate the significant and anticipated role of top management in safety climate at sites. Implications of this study include assisting construction industry stakeholders to better understand and enhance safety climate, which in turn will lead to improved safety behavior, culture, motivation, and performance.
