Study on Photoelastic Method for Measuring Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Pressure in Line Contact

In the present paper, a new method for measuring elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) pressure in line contact is proposed, which is based on the photoelastic technique. The pressure distribution of EHL film and the inner stresses in the friction pairs are fundamental issues to carry out EHL research. The film thickness, pressure and temperature have been successfully obtained with solving the basic equations such as Reynolds equation and energy equation simultaneously or separately, with numerical model of EHL problem. The film thickness can be also measured with the optical interference technique. However, the pressure measurement is still a problem which has not been well solved yet, so as the inner stresses inside the friction pairs. With the experimental mechanics, the photoelastic technique is a possible method to be used for measuring the pressure distribution of EHL film and inner friction pair in the line contact. Therefore, A flat plastic disk and a steel roller compose the frictional pairs of the photoelastic pressure measuring rig with combining the monochromatic LED light source, polarizer CCD camera and stereomicroscope to form the whole pressure measuring system of the line contact EHL. The experimental results with the rig display the typical features of EHL pressure. This shows that the method is feasible to be used for measuring the pressure of EHL film and the inner stresses of the friction pairs in the line contact.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the behavior of a single ridge passing through elastohydrodynamic lubrication of point contacts problem for different ridge shapes and sizes, including flat-top, triangular and cosine wave pattern to get an optimal ridge profile. Design/methodology/approach The time-dependent Reynolds’ equation is solved using Newton–Raphson technique. Several shapes of surface feature are simulated and the film thickness and pressure distribution are obtained at every time step by simultaneous solution of the Reynolds’ equation and film thickness equation, including elastic deformation. Film thickness and pressure distribution are chosen to be the criteria in the comparisons. Findings The geometrical characteristics of the ridge play an important role in the formation of lubricant film thickness profile and the pressure distribution through the contact zone. To minimize wear, friction and fatigue life, an optimal ridge profile should have smooth shape with small ridge size. Obtained results are compared with other published numerical results and show a good agreement. Originality/value The study evaluates the performance of different surface features of a single ridge with different shapes and sizes passing through elastohydrodynamic of point contact problem in relation to film thickness and pressure profile.

Three formulas are derived for predicting the central and the minimum film thickness as well as the asperity load ratio in line-contact EHL with provision for surface roughness. These expressions are based on the simultaneous solution to the modified Reynolds equation and surface deformation with consideration of elastic, plastic and elasto-plastic deformation of the surface asperities. The formulas cover a wide range of input and they are of the form f(W, U, G, σ¯, V), where the parameters represented are dimensionless load, speed, material, surface roughness and hardness, respectively.

The paper describes a technique for solving the inverse lubrication problem under point contact elastohydrodynamic conditions, i.e. the calculation of a film thickness and shape corresponding to a given hydrodynamic pressure distribution by an inverse solution of Reynolds’ equation. The effect of compressibility and influence of pressure upon viscosity are included in the analysis. The technique will be of use in solving the point contact elastohydrodynamic lubrication problem at heavy loads.

This paper investigates in detail the influence of two different surface topographies on the pressure distribution and film thickness profile of a highly loaded (maximum Hertzian pressure 2 GPa) line contact as a function of the slide to roll ratio. To accomplish this the transient Reynolds equation is solved both in space and time. The first feature under investigation is localized, a so-called indentation, the second one is global: waviness. The observed lack of synchronism in the extremes of pressure and film thickness is explained theoretically by analyzing the Reynolds equation. The minimum and average film thickness values in case of waviness are analyzed as a function of the slide to roll ratio, amplitude, and wavelength. Depending on the slide to roll ratio, the transient solutions may differ significantly from their stationary counterparts. In such cases, therefore, a transient analysis cannot be avoided.

The film thickness under steady state conditions can be measured by using an optical interferometer. An inverse approach is proposed for estimating the pressure distribution on the basis of film thickness measurement in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) circular contacts. This approach is constructed from the approximated model of elastic deformation and force balance equations. To obtain an accurate pressure, it is necessary to divide the domain into a few regions on account of the singularity at the pressure spike. The principle of measuring point selection is proposed, and the problem of pressure fluctuation is overcome. On the basis of the smoothed pressure distribution, the apparent viscosity of the film can be obtained from the Reynolds equation. The least-squares method is used to compute the optimum value of the pressure-viscosity index. Results show that the best region for estimating the pressure-viscosity index is along the x axis because the Poiseuille term becomes zero in the Reynolds equation on account of the symmetry. In this region, the estimated pressure-viscosity index shows very good agreement with the exact value when measurement errors are neglected. When measurement errors are taken into account, the close agreement shows the potential of the proposed approach in estimating accurate values of the pressure-viscosity index. Generally, the error in estimating the pressure-viscosity index increases with increasing standard deviation of the measurement error, load, speed, material parameter and absolute error of the measured film thickness. The inverse approach can also be used to estimate the pressure distribution on a film thickness map obtained from an optical EHL tester. Moreover, the agreement between the actual and the estimated values of z is quite good.

This paper presents the analysis of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) of two parallel cylinders in line contact with non-Newtonian fluids under oscillatory motion. The effects of transverse harmonic surface roughness are also investigated in the numerical simulation. The time-dependent Reynolds equation uses a power law model for viscosity. The simultaneous system of modified Reynolds equation and elasticity equation with initial conditions was solved using multi-grid multi-level method with full approximation technique. Film thickness and pressure profiles were determined for smooth and rough surfaces in the oscillatory EHL conjunctions, and the film thickness predictions were verified experimentally. For an increase in the applied load on the cylinders, the minimum film thickness calculated numerically becomes smaller. The predicted film thickness is slightly higher than the film thickness obtained experimentally, owing to cavitation that occurred in the experiments. For both hard and soft EHL contacts, the minimum film thickness under oscillatory motion is very thin near the trailing edge of the contact, especially for stiffer surfaces. The surface roughness and power law index of the non-Newtonian lubricant both have significant effects on the film thickness and pressure profile between the cylinders under oscillatory motion.

Our earlier studies of elastohydrodynamic lubrication of conjunctions of elliptical form are applied to the particular and interesting situation exhibited by materials of low elastic modulus. By modifying the procedures we outlined in an earlier publication, the influence of the ellipticity parameter k and the dimensionless speed U, load W, and material G parameters on minimum film thickness for these materials has been investigated. The ellipticity parameter was varied from 1 (a ball-on-plate configuration) to 12 (a configuration approaching a line contact). The dimensionless speed and load parameters were varied by 1 order of magnitude. Seventeen different cases were used to generate the following minimum- and central-film-thickness relations: H˜min=7.43(1−0.85e−0.31k)U0.65W−0.21H˜c=7.32(1−0.72e−0.28k)U0.64W−0.22 Contour plots are presented that illustrate in detail the pressure distribution and film thickness in the conjunction.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to use elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) theory to study the variation of the equivalent curvature radius “R” on the change of oil film thickness, pressure, temperature rise and friction coefficient in the contact zone between bush-pin in industrial chain drive. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the contact between bush and pin is simplified as infinitely long line contact. The lubrication state is studied by numerical simulation using steady-state line contact thermal EHL. The two constitutive equations, namely, Newton fluid and Ree–Eyring fluid are used in the calculations. Findings It is found that with the increase of equivalent curvature radius, the thickness of oil film decreases and the temperature rise increases. Under the same condition, the friction coefficient of Newton fluid is higher than that of Ree–Eyring fluid. When the load increases, the oil film thickness decreases, the temperature rise increases and the friction coefficient decreases; and the film thickness increases with the increase of the entraining speed under the condition “R < 1,000 mm”. Research limitations/implications The infinite line contact assumption is only an approximation. For example, the distances between the two inner plates are 5.72 mm, by considering the two parts assembled into the inner plates, the total length of the bush is less than 6 mm. The diameter of the pin and the bore diameter of the bush are 3.28 and 3.33 mm. However, the infinite line contact is also helpful in understanding the general variation of oil film characteristics and provides a reference for the future study of finite line contact of chain problems. Originality/value The change of the equivalent radius R on the variation of the oil film in the contact of the bush and the pin in industrial chain drive was investigated. The size effect influences the lubrication characteristic greatly in the bush-pin pair.

Considering lumen elastic deformation, Reynolds equation is deduced based on non-Newtonian model in this paper. Traction force and hydrodynamic mucus film thickness are calculated according to elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory. Compared with results based on Newtonian model and experiments, analysis based on non-Newtonian model reflects practical condition well. Lumen elastic deformation has some influence on traction force and mucus film thickness.
