Irregular spatial dependency is one of the major characteristics of remote sensing images, which brings about challenges for classification tasks. Deep supervised models such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown great capacity for remote sensing image classification. However, they generally require a huge labeled training set for the fine tuning of a deep neural network. To handle the irregular spatial dependency of remote sensing images and mitigate the conflict between limited labeled samples and training demand, we design a superpixel-guided layer-wise embedding CNN (SLE-CNN) for remote sensing image classification, which can efficiently exploit the information from both labeled and unlabeled samples. With the superpixel-guided sampling strategy for unlabeled samples, we can achieve an automatic determination of the neighborhood covering for a spatial dependency system and thus adapting to real scenes of remote sensing images. In the designed network, two types of loss costs are combined for the training of CNN, i.e., supervised cross entropy and unsupervised reconstruction cost on both labeled and unlabeled samples, respectively. Our experimental results are conducted with three types of remote sensing data, including hyperspectral, multispectral, and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The designed SLE-CNN achieves excellent classification performance in all cases with a limited labeled training set, suggesting its good potential for remote sensing image classification.

Remote-sensing images play a crucial role in a wide range of applications and have been receiving significant attention. In recent years, great efforts have been made in developing various methods for intelligent interpretation of remote-sensing images. Generally speaking, machine learning-based methods of remote-sensing image interpretation require a large number of labeled samples and there are still not enough annotated datasets in the field of remote sensing. However, manual annotation of remote-sensing images is usually labor-intensive and requires expert knowledge and the accuracy of annotation results is relatively low. The goal of this paper is to propose a novel tile-level annotation method of remote-sensing images to obtain remote-sensing datasets which are well-labeled and contain accurate semantic concepts. Firstly, we use a set of images with defined semantic concepts to represent the training set and divide them into several nonoverlapping regions. Secondly, the color features, texture features, and spatial features of each region are extracted, and discriminative features are obtained by the weight optimization feature fusion method. Then, the features are quantized into visual words by applying a density-based clustering center selection method and an isolated feature point elimination method. And the remote-sensing images can be represented by a series of visual words. Finally, the LDA model is used to calculate the probabilities of semantic categories for each region. The experiments are conducted on remote-sensing images which demonstrate that our proposed method can achieve good performance on remote-sensing image tile-level annotation. The implications of our research can obtain annotated datasets with accurate semantic concepts for intelligent interpretation of remote-sensing images.

A large number of old coal mine, such as Xinglongzhuang coal mine, made a great contribution to local economic development and national construction. But, serious mining collapsing was caused also, and local people's livelihood has been affected seriously. The mining collapsing could be identified on remote sensing images by some characteristics. There were 4 period remote sensing data, which was acquired respectively in June 2009, April 2010, June 2011 and July 2012, and field investigation were applied in this articles to study these mining collapsing. The research suggests that the mining collapsing could be divided into the aged type, the middle aged type and the young type. There is a suggestion that, the monitoring and prevention works should be strengthened.

Although efforts and progress have been made in crop classification using optical remote sensing images, it is still necessary to make full use of the high spatial, temporal, and spectral resolutions of remote sensing images. However, with the increasing volume of remote sensing data, a key emerging issue in the field of crop classification is how to find useful information from massive data to balance classification accuracy and processing time. To address this challenge, we developed a novel crop classification method, combining optimal feature selection (OFSM) with hybrid convolutional neural network-random forest (CNN-RF) networks for multi-temporal optical remote sensing images. This research used 234 features including spectral, segmentation, color, and texture features from three scenes of Sentinel-2 images to identify crop types in the Jilin province of northeast China. To effectively extract the effective features of remote sensing data with lower time requirements, the use of OFSM was proposed with the results compared with two traditional feature selection methods (TFSM): random forest feature importance selection (RF-FI) and random forest recursive feature elimination (RF-RFE). Although the time required for OFSM was 26.05 s, which was between RF-FI with 1.97 s and RF-RFE with 132.54 s, OFSM outperformed RF-FI and RF-RFE in terms of the overall accuracy (OA) of crop classification by 4% and 0.3%, respectively. On the basis of obtaining effective feature information, to further improve the accuracy of crop classification we designed two hybrid CNN-RF networks to leverage the advantages of one-dimensional convolution (Conv1D) and Visual Geometry Group (VGG) with random forest (RF), respectively. Based on the selected optimal features using OFSM, four networks were tested for comparison: Conv1D-RF, VGG-RF, Conv1D, and VGG. Conv1D-RF achieved the highest OA at 94.27% as compared with VGG-RF (93.23%), Conv1D (92.59%), and VGG (91.89%), indicating that the Conv1D-RF method with optimal feature input provides an effective and efficient method of time series representation for multi-temporal crop-type classification.

Recently, the demand for remote sensing image retrieval is growing and attracting the interest of many researchers because of the increasing number of remote sensing images. Hashing, as a method of retrieving images, has been widely applied to remote sensing image retrieval. In order to improve hashing performance, we develop a cohesion intensive deep hashing model for remote sensing image retrieval. The underlying architecture of our deep model is motivated by the state-of-the-art residual net. Residual nets aim at avoiding gradient vanishing and gradient explosion when the net reaches a certain depth. However, different from the residual net which outputs multiple class-labels, we present a residual hash net that is terminated by a Heaviside-like function for binarizing remote sensing images. In this scenario, the representational power of the residual net architecture is exploited to establish an end-to-end deep hashing model. The residual hash net is trained subject to a weighted loss strategy that intensifies the cohesiveness of image hash codes within one class. This effectively addresses the data imbalance problem normally arising in remote sensing image retrieval tasks. Furthermore, we adopted a gradualness optimization method for obtaining optimal model parameters in order to favor accurate binary codes with little quantization error. We conduct comparative experiments on large-scale remote sensing data sets such as UCMerced and AID. The experimental results validate the hypothesis that our method improves the performance of current remote sensing image retrieval.

Monitoring the illegally occupied channels is very important for the management and regulations of reservoirs. This paper proposes an automatic and efficient approach to identify the changes in the river course with geographic information system and global position system using multi-temporal remote sensing images. Unlike the traditional river course monitoring system, this approach is mainly based on the change detection information extracting from multi-temporal high spatial resolution remote sensing images. Firstly, change detection from different information of multi-temporal remote sensing images are applied to obtain the change information thematic maps which can be used as working maps for on-site investigation are extracted. Secondly, GPS-RTK measurement technology is used to obtain 3-D position information of the terrain features points in those channel occupied areas. Then, an approach for calculating the volume of the channel occupied area is designed and developed by ArcGIS software using multi-temporal remote sensing images, 3-D position information and historical digital terrain date of channel occupied area. Finally, channel occupied area volume data and thematic maps are acquired by ArcGIS software. The data of reservoir is selected as experimental area, and the experiments have confirmed the high efficiency and accuracy of this approach proposed in this paper.

With rapid advancements in remote sensing image registration algorithms, comprehensive imaging applications are no longer limited to single-modal remote sensing images. Instead, multi-modal remote sensing (MMRS) image registration has become a research focus in recent years. However, considering multi-source, multi-temporal, and multi-spectrum input introduces significant nonlinear radiation differences in MMRS images for which researchers need to develop novel solutions. At present, comprehensive reviews and analyses of MMRS image registration methods are inadequate in related fields. Thus, this paper introduces three theoretical frameworks: namely, area-based, feature-based and deep learning-based methods. We present a brief review of traditional methods and focus on more advanced methods for MMRS image registration proposed in recent years. Our review or comprehensive analysis is intended to provide researchers in related fields with advanced understanding to achieve further breakthroughs and innovations.

Image classification will still be a long way in the future, although it has gone almost half a century. In fact, researchers have gained many fruits in the image classification domain, but there is still a long distance between theory and practice. However, some new methods in the artificial intelligence domain will be absorbed into the image classification domain and draw on the strength of each to offset the weakness of the other, which will open up a new prospect. Usually, networks play the role of a high-level language, as is seen in Artificial Intelligence and statistics, because networks are used to build complex model from simple components. These years, Bayesian Networks, one of probabilistic networks, are a powerful data mining technique for handling uncertainty in complex domains. In this paper, we apply Tree Augmented Naive Bayesian Networks (TAN) to texture classification of High-resolution remote sensing images and put up a new method to construct the network topology structure in terms of training accuracy based on the training samples. Since 2013, China government has started the first national geographical information census project, which mainly interprets geographical information based on high-resolution remote sensing images. Therefore, this paper tries to apply Bayesian network to remote sensing image classification, in order to improve image interpretation in the first national geographical information census project. In the experiment, we choose some remote sensing images in Beijing. Experimental results demonstrate TAN outperform than Naive Bayesian Classifier (NBC) and Maximum Likelihood Classification Method (MLC) in the overall classification accuracy. In addition, the proposed method can reduce the workload of field workers and improve the work efficiency. Although it is time consuming, it will be an attractive and effective method for assisting office operation of image interpretation.
