A two dimensional numerical model of the free-burning arc and its interaction with anode are given. The commercial CFD code FLUENT is used to model the plasma and the solid anode part. The anode sheath is considered, as well as the heat transfer mechanism of the anode surface. The second boundary condition of heat conduction is introduced to give a more reasonable cooling boundary, so that the temperature distribution in the anode plate is more realistic. Through iteration calculation of steady MHD equations, the temperature field, pressure field and velocity field profiles are given. The result is of significant use to analysis thermal and control the electric power in the arc industrial applications.

The thermohydrodynamic analysis of oil film bearing is essential for high speed oil film bearing. The temperature field is coupled with the pressure field. The numerical model can be built or chosen according to the complexity of the objects and requirement of the accuracy. In this paper, four pressure-thermal (P-T) models are proposed, which are zero-dimensional temperature field coupled with Reynolds equation (0D P-T model), two-dimensional temperature field coupled with Reynolds equation (2D P-T model), two-dimensional temperature with third dimensional correction coupled with Dawson equation (2sD P-T model), three-dimensional temperature field coupled with Dawson equation (3D P-T model). The non-Newtonian and temperature-viscosity effects of the lubrication oil are considered in all the four models. Two types of cylindrical journal bearing, the bearing with/without axial grooves, are applied for the simulation. All the simulated cases are compared with the solutions of the CFX. The results show that the 0D P-T model fails to predict the behavior of high speed bearing; The 2D and 2sD P-T model have an acceptable accuracy to predict the performance of the bearing without grooves, but are not able to simulate the P-T field of the bearing with grooves because of the under-developed thermal boundary layer; The 2sD P-T model shows a great improvement when calculating the pressure field compared with the 2D P-T model; the 3D P-T model coincides well with the CFX at any condition. The comparison of these four models provides a reference to help designer choose a proper numerical model for a certain project.

AbstractA generalization of the usual method of similarity analysis of differential equations, the method of partially invariant solutions, was introduced by Ovsiannikov. The degree of non-invariance of these solutions is characterized by the defect of invariance d. We develop an algorithm leading to partially invariant solutions of quasilinear systems of first-order partial differential equations. We apply the algorithm to the non-linear equations of the two-dimensional non-stationary ideal MHD with a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of motion.

The objective of this article is to derive an analytical solution for a two-dimensional temperature field in a hollow cylinder, which is subjected to a periodic boundary condition at the outer surface, while the inner surface is insulated. The material is assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic with time-independent thermal properties. Because of the time-dependent term in the boundary condition, Duhamel's theorem is used to solve the problem for a periodic boundary condition. The periodic boundary condition is decomposed using the Fourier series. This condition is simulated with harmonic oscillation; however, there are some differences with the real situation. To solve this problem, first of all the boundary condition is assumed to be steady. By applying the method of separation of variables, the temperature distribution in a hollow cylinder can be obtained. Then, the boundary condition is assumed to be transient. In both these cases, the solutions are separately calculated. By using Duhamel's theorem, the temperature distribution field in a hollow cylinder is obtained. The final result is plotted with respect to the Biot and Fourier numbers. There is good agreement between the results of the proposed method and those reported by others for this geometry under a simple harmonic boundary condition.

Acoustic levitation forces can be used to manipulate small objects and liquid without mechanical contact or contamination. To use acoustic levitation for contactless robotic grippers, automated insertion of objects into the acoustic pressure field is necessary. This work presents analytical models based on which concepts for the controlled insertion of objects are developed. Two prototypes of acoustic grippers are implemented and used to experimentally verify the lifting of objects into the acoustic field. Using standing acoustic waves and by dynamically adjusting the acoustic power, the lifting of high-density objects (>7 g/cm3) from acoustically transparent surfaces is demonstrated. Moreover, a combination of different acoustic traps is used to lift lower-density objects from acoustically reflective surfaces. The provided results open up new possibilities for the implementation of acoustic levitation in robotic grippers, which have the potential to be used in a variety of industrial applications.

As opposed to traditional pneumatic linear actuators, muscle and rotational actuators are newly developed actuators in rotational and specified applications. In the current paper, these actuators are used to set up two-dimensional pneumatic arms, which are used mainly to simulate the excavator's motion. Fuzzy control algorithms are typically applied in pneumatic control systems owing to their non-linearities and ill-defined mathematical model. The self-organizing fuzzy controller, which includes a self-learning mechanism to modify fuzzy rules, is applied in these two-dimensional pneumatic arm control systems. Via a variety of trajectory tracking experiments, the present paper provides comparisons of system characteristics and control performances.

This paper presents the practical results of the design analysis, commissioning, identification, sensor calibration, and tuning of an active magnetic bearing (AMB) control system for a laboratory gas blower. The presented step-by-step procedures, including modeling and disturbance analysis for different design choices, are necessary to reach the full potential of the prototype in research and industrial applications. The key results include estimation of radial and axial disturbance forces caused by the permanent magnet (PM) rotor and a discussion on differences between the unbalance forces resulting from the PM motor and the induction motor in the AMB rotor system.
