The water-ways were complicated and intertwined in the Hongze Lake section of South-to-North Water Transfer Project. A complex natural environment and multitudinous chemical enterprises here result in environmental risk sources in this region. This study, with the Hongze Lake as center, aims to investigate information of pollution sources about 22 plants in the surrounding cities. We construct recognition evaluation index system for watershed risk sources, calculate risk coefficient about the risk sources by R-AHP Comprehensive Evaluation and finally determine the 4 risk levels. The results can help to make identification mark taking the grading alert colors and it is significant for decreasing the probability of major environmental pollution accidents.

The implementation of water diversion projects will exert different influences on upstream water offering areas and the downstream water receiving areas. In order to effectively promote the coordinated development of the two regions, a comprehensive evaluation system for the coordinated development of water transfer projects has been proposed with the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project as the research object. The system conducts a multidimensional evaluation of social development, economic development, and ecological environmental impact, and builds a comprehensive evaluation index system with fifteen evaluation indexes at three levels, with the indexes weighted through the comprehensive weighting method based on the combination of the G1 method and the entropy weight method. Based on the degree of coordinated development among various systems, the coordinated development of the Middle Route of the South–North Water Transfer Project is graded through a comprehensive evaluation. This method is tested in the decision support system of the Middle Route Construction and Administration Bureau, China. The results show that: (1) The coupling coordination degree value of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project is 0.8912, which shows that the regional development of the water transfer project is high coupled coordination. (2) The coordination between the economic system and the ecological environment system is weaker than the coordination between the economic system and the social service system, and the coordination between the ecological and social services is the best. Finally, based on an advanced SWOT analysis of the future development of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, effective suggestions for regional development are provided. It provides reference or guidance for the competent authority to manage the water diversion project and the central government to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of the water diversion project.

Message mapping is useful for communications which should be easy to understand and reflect the concerns of stakeholders when abrupt trans-boundary environmental pollution occurs in river basin. This paper describes the process undertaken to develop the message maps, and lessons learned thus far. The working group developed a message map for one part of east route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (from Yangtze River to Hongze Lake). The message map can help give clear and concise information for stakeholders communication in a crisis where emotions are high, and provides information support for information map visualization in the near future.

The South-to-North Water Transfer Project is a cross century water diversion project. So it is very important to ensure its normal operation. The hydraulic calculation of Jiping Canal of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project is carried out in this paper, working out cross section, the profile and the X-Y-Z perspective plot of Jiping Canal respectively. An analysis of the canal stability enables us to get the condition in which the canal is stable, which will provide strong technical support for the design and construction of the canal. Therefore, the analysis has important practical significance. The study will be effective guidance on the normal operation of Jiping Canal of South-to-North Water Transfer Project.

The traffic bridges along the route of South-to-North Water Diversion Project are numerous. Once a traffic accident occurs causing pollutants in the channel, the water safety, ecological environment and economic development of water receiving areas along the line will be affected . We investigate the bridges along the channel, focusing on the investigation and analysis of hazardous chemicals, nearby backwater gates and water inlets involving 173 cross-channel bridges with large traffic volume. The risk evaluation index system of sudden water pollution is established in this study, while the risk of different bridges is evaluated. We divide bridges in three risk grades, and delimit key prevention areas and key monitoring objects. And the stress of traffic risk factors on the water quality safety is summarized. It is significant for being regarded as basis for contingency plans, hierarchical responses and emergency material reserve for the middle line of the south-to-north water diversion project.

Water quality assurance is the primary factor for the successful operation of water diversion projects across river basins. The rapid prediction of water pollution is the basis for timely and effective emergency control and disposal measures. In China, since the open channels intersect with numerous waterways and traffic arteries, water transfer projects are prone to sudden water pollution accidents. In this paper, the rapid prediction method was developed for sudden water pollution accidents that possibly occurred in the East Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (ERP) in Shandong Province. With the empirical formula of the pollution transfer law, a rapid prediction model of water quality (WQRP) was established based on the simulation of the typical accidents in the main channel. Finally, four typical accidents were selected as application examples, and the prediction results were compared with the results from a computer numerical simulation to demonstrate the validity of the model. The results showed that the prediction results by the WQRP model meet the accuracy requirements. This method is of great significance for providing water transport security in the extreme conditions of long-distance water transfer projects.
