The implementation of water diversion projects will exert different influences on upstream water offering areas and the downstream water receiving areas. In order to effectively promote the coordinated development of the two regions, a comprehensive evaluation system for the coordinated development of water transfer projects has been proposed with the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project as the research object. The system conducts a multidimensional evaluation of social development, economic development, and ecological environmental impact, and builds a comprehensive evaluation index system with fifteen evaluation indexes at three levels, with the indexes weighted through the comprehensive weighting method based on the combination of the G1 method and the entropy weight method. Based on the degree of coordinated development among various systems, the coordinated development of the Middle Route of the South–North Water Transfer Project is graded through a comprehensive evaluation. This method is tested in the decision support system of the Middle Route Construction and Administration Bureau, China. The results show that: (1) The coupling coordination degree value of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project is 0.8912, which shows that the regional development of the water transfer project is high coupled coordination. (2) The coordination between the economic system and the ecological environment system is weaker than the coordination between the economic system and the social service system, and the coordination between the ecological and social services is the best. Finally, based on an advanced SWOT analysis of the future development of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, effective suggestions for regional development are provided. It provides reference or guidance for the competent authority to manage the water diversion project and the central government to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of the water diversion project.

The water-ways were complicated and intertwined in the Hongze Lake section of South-to-North Water Transfer Project. A complex natural environment and multitudinous chemical enterprises here result in environmental risk sources in this region. This study, with the Hongze Lake as center, aims to investigate information of pollution sources about 22 plants in the surrounding cities. We construct recognition evaluation index system for watershed risk sources, calculate risk coefficient about the risk sources by R-AHP Comprehensive Evaluation and finally determine the 4 risk levels. The results can help to make identification mark taking the grading alert colors and it is significant for decreasing the probability of major environmental pollution accidents.

The South-to-North Water Transfer Project is a cross century water diversion project. So it is very important to ensure its normal operation. The hydraulic calculation of Jiping Canal of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project is carried out in this paper, working out cross section, the profile and the X-Y-Z perspective plot of Jiping Canal respectively. An analysis of the canal stability enables us to get the condition in which the canal is stable, which will provide strong technical support for the design and construction of the canal. Therefore, the analysis has important practical significance. The study will be effective guidance on the normal operation of Jiping Canal of South-to-North Water Transfer Project.

Beijing is located in a semiarid region, and water shortage is a common problem in the city. Along with the rapid increase in water demand, due to fast socioeconomic development and an increase in population, a shortage of water resources and a deterioration of the water environment have become obstacles to sustainable socioeconomic development in Beijing. In the long run, sustainable water resources management, water conservation, and completion of the south to north water diversion project will solve the problem. This paper introduces the water resources situation in Beijing; analyzes future water demand; and discusses the actions of water saving, nontraditional water resources exploitation, wetland construction, and water environment protection. The paper also explains the importance of the south to north water diversion project and the general layout of the water supply strategy, water distribution system, and methods to efficiently use the diverted water in Beijing.Key words: water resources, water supply, water saving, water recycling, water diversion.

Water scarcity in densely populated areas is a global concern. In China, ensuring water supply and quality in the middle of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project has become a major challenge due to the complexity and diversity of landscape features and the trunk canal construction in the crossing area of this route. Precise assessments of the pressures on water protection along the route are urgently needed. This article provides a rigorous methodological framework to assess water quality protection, identifying the intensity of human disturbance along the route within 2-km radius buffer areas on both sides of the trunk canal, based on land-use changes from 2005 to 2015. The results show that more than 10,000 ha of pervious surfaces were transformed into impervious surfaces, leading to undesirable outcomes. The results of this study can be used for decisive support in China’s environmental management, such as with main functional zoning policy and ecological red lines policy.

Aiming at the complexity of the network transmission environment and the decentralization of the monitoring sites in the middle route of the South to North Water Diversion Project, this article presents a water conservancy monitoring architecture based on the visual sensor networks. First, a network assessment method is proposed to evaluate the sensor networks condition, and the encoder is adjusted with the result of the sensor networks condition evaluation. Then, based on distributed database architecture and visualization system construction, a three-level structure of the water conservancy monitoring system is designed and built. The experiment results show that the water conservancy monitoring system proposed in this article meets the transmission requirement under the complex sensor networks condition of water conservancy project. The water conservancy monitoring system has been applied to the middle route of the South to North Water Diversion Project, which achieves the needs of engineering applications.
