The cascaded multilevel inverter may be the best topology to satisfy continuously increasing capacity and scale of grid-connected photovoltaic generation system due to its modularized circuit layout and sufficiently high operating voltage without devices in series. The operating principle of the cascaded multilevel inverter is presented. The control strategy of carrier phase shift PWM is proposed and discussed in detail. A grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) generation system based on a seven level cascaded inverter is provided. Simulation model of a seven level cascaded inverter with phase shifted PWM is built in Simulink environment and simulation results verify that the cascaded multilevel inverter can output high level voltage without devices in series, reduce harmonics, and output high quality waveforms.

Islanding detection is an important issue for grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) generation systems. The paper puts forward a new composite islanding detection method combining active current disturbance and reactive current disturbance. This islanding detection method for three-phase inverter is simulated in the Matlab/Simulink environment. Simulation results show that, when the inverter output and the load power are balanced, the new islanding detection method can detect islanding quickly with little influence on the power quality.

This paper presents a relatively new concept for the design and implementation of a grid-tie inverter for photo voltaic (PV) systems. The proposed method will eliminate the uses of battery pack hence overall cost of any PV project will be significantly reduced. As the output of any PV array varies with the variation of solar irradiance hence a boost converter with PID regulated variable duty cycle has been used to keep a constant input to the inverter. Multilevel inverter topology has been proposed for utility grid connectivity. The proposed design is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and a prototype is also implemented to verify the simulation results. The controllers are implemented in Arduino microcontroller board.

In recent years, the introduction of the photovoltaic generation system (PV system) has been increasing by promoting the use of renewable energy. It has been feared that the reverse current from the PV system may cause an unacceptable level of voltage rise at the interconnection node in the power distribution system. This paper discusses the effects of the reverse current on the voltage rise and fall characteristics of the interconnection node and the voltage profiles along the power distribution line. When the line current on the circuit is small, the voltage on the line monotonically increases from the sending end to the receiving end. When a relatively large current flows, it causes a voltage reduction near the distribution substation. Furthermore, on the basis of the voltage aspects in the power distribution system with a large PV system, the allowable limits of the line current and the output power from PV system are investigated.

Cascaded multilevel inverter (CMI) topology is prevalent in many applications. However, the CMI requires many switches and isolated dc sources, which is the main drawback of this type of inverter. As a result, the volume, cost and complexity of the CMI topology are increased and the efficiency is deteriorated. This paper thus proposes a switched-capacitor-based multilevel inverter topology with half-bridge cells and only one dc source. Compared to the conventional CMI, the proposed inverter uses almost half the number of switches, while maintaining a boosting capability. Additionally, the main drawback of switched-capacitor multilevel inverters is the capacitor inrush current. This problem is also averted in the proposed topology by using a charging inductor or quasi-resonant capacitor charging with a front-end boost converter. Simulation results and lab-scale experimental verifications are provided to validate the feasibility and viability of the proposed inverter topology.

In this paper, the configuration of the PV generation system, the dynamic model for PV modules and its power electronic interfacing have been presented. A novel control strategy for the DC-DC converter has been developed in order to extract the maximum amount of power from the PV array. Also, a novel control strategy, which is based on d-q rotating reference frame, has been proposed for the DC-AC converter. The simulation results, based on PSCAD/EMTDC, show that the novel control scheme can transfer the DC energy from PV array, compensate the power factor of AC grid and improve the dynamic behavior of grid-connected PV system.

This paper proposes a Hybridized Symmetric Cascaded Multilevel Inverter for voltage levels ranging from 5 levels to 17 levels. The proposed Multi Level Inverter (MLI) topology is built using a modified H-bridge inverter that results in an increased output voltage levels with a smaller number of solid-state switches. This technique enhances the h-bridge configuration from three level to five level by means of a bi-directional switch at source. Gating pulses of hybridized symmetric MLI are generated through staircase modulation. The operation and performance of the proposed topology is tested for different output voltage levels, simulation results prove that the proposed technique results in less THD at all levels with lesser power consumption and are easily applicable for renewable energy applications.
