A method for evaluating the line sharpness in digital printings is established. First of all, a test diagram, with some lines spaced with the same distance as the lines width, orienting in horizontal and vertical direction, was designed. A digital printer was used to output the test diagram on eighteen kinds of paper commonly used in market. From the eight attributes of line quality in ISO/IEC 13660 standard, three attributes, that are contrast, edge raggedness and line width, which were extracted our to be the main index describing the line sharpness. Furthermore, connecting them with the subjective evaluation, an evaluation model for predicting the perceived line sharpness were established, and the model show that the perceived line sharpness was highly correlated with these three attributes, among which quantified contrast exhibits the highest correlation with subjective, while raggedness and width exhibits a similar and weaker correlation. The perceived line sharpness was able to be predicted through a linear model.

In order to improve the transmission efficiency and carrying capacity of conventional single-belt continuously variable transmission (CVT), one new type of dual-belt CVT is proposed in this paper. Under the situation that this new dual-belt CVT should be switched between single- and dual-belt modes frequently according to driver’s intention and road conditions, so five objective evaluation indexes of mode switching quality for the dual-belt CVT are proposed, considering the aspects of vehicle power, comfort, and transmission durability comprehensively. Then, the objective evaluation model of mode switching quality is established by the BP neural network optimized by the genetic algorithm. It is found that the prediction results are consistent with the subjective evaluation. After analyzing the influence of the selected five evaluation indexes on the prediction results, it is obvious that these five evaluation indexes of mode switching quality for dual-belt CVT are reasonable.

Image aesthetic evaluation refers to the subjective aesthetic evaluation of images. Computational aesthetics has been widely concerned due to the limitations of subjective evaluation. Aiming at the problem that the existing evaluation methods of image aesthetic quality only extract the low-level features of images and they have a low correlation with human subjective perception, this paper proposes an aesthetic evaluation model based on latent semantic features. The aesthetic features of images are extracted by superpixel segmentation that is based on weighted density POI (Point of Interest), which includes semantic features, texture features, and color features. These features are mapped to feature words by LLC (Locality-constrained Linear Coding) and, furthermore, latent semantic features are extracted using the LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation). Finally, the SVM classifier is used to establish the classification prediction model of image aesthetics. The experimental results on the AVA dataset show that the feature coding based on latent semantics proposed in this paper improves the adaptability of the image aesthetic prediction model, and the correlation with human subjective perception reaches 83.75%.

For a long time, planners get used to apply qualitative analysis and subjective knowledge to define urban green space system. Lacking support of quantitative analysis, the incomplete inventory will result in subjective evaluation, low pertinence. And the required depth and level for planning will not be strong enough. This study strives for introduce ecological suitability evaluation to urban green space system, derives the supporting theory, framework, and evaluation model. By using GIS, Luancheng green space system is generated based on the ecological suitability analysis. Also, this study shows that green space system planning is more operational and reliable based on ecological suitability evaluation.

Russet spotting (RS) is an important postharvest disorder in Iceberg lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). Previous studies showed that RS is induced by exposure to ∼5 ppm (ul/l) ethylene at ∼5C for 3 days and is characterized by the appearance of 1 to 2 mm diam. oval, brown sunken spots along the midrib. Increases in phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity and phenolic content are highly correlated with RS development. Ethylene-induced PAL activity is much less at higher (12C) or lower (0C) temperatures. In this study isolated whole leaves were exposed to a log series of ethylene concentrations from 0.1 to 10 ppm at temperatures from 0.0C to 20C for up to 8 days. Tissue was transferred among these various treatments to investigate the kinetics of PAL induction, activity and deactivation, phenolic accumulation, and RS development. A subjective evaluation was then made of RS development using a 1 to 9 scoring system in which 1 was no RS, and then PAL activity and phenolic content were measured. Preliminary results indicate that ethylene-induced PAL activity was decreased more rapidly upon transfer to temperatures above 10C than to 0.0C. Accumulation of phenolic compounds and development of RS paralleled each other, and were positively related to PAL activity. Practical implications of these results will be discussed.

ABSTRACT We investigate how the spectral properties of atomic (H i) and molecular (H2) gas, traced by CO(2−1) , are related in M33 on 80 pc scales. We find the H i  and CO(2−1)  velocity at peak intensity to be highly correlated, consistent with previous studies. By stacking spectra aligned to the velocity of H i peak intensity, we find that the CO  line width (σHWHM = 4.6 ± 0.9 ${\rm km\, s^{-1}}$ ; σHWHM is the effective Gaussian width) is consistently smaller than the H i line width (σHWHM = 6.6 ± 0.1 ${\rm km\, s^{-1}}$), with a ratio of ∼0.7, in agreement with Druard et al. The ratio of the line widths remains less than unity when the data are smoothed to a coarser spatial resolution. In other nearby galaxies, this line width ratio is close to unity which has been used as evidence for a thick, diffuse molecular disc that is distinct from the thin molecular disc dominated by molecular clouds. The smaller line width ratio found here suggests that M33 has a marginal thick molecular disc. From modelling individual lines of sight, we recover a strong correlation between H i and CO line widths when only the H i located closest to the CO component is considered. The median line width ratio of the line-of-sight line widths is 0.56 ± 0.01. There is substantial scatter in the H i –CO(2−1) line width relation, larger than the uncertainties, that results from regional variations on <500 pc scales, and there is no significant trend in the line widths, or their ratios, with galactocentric radius. These regional line width variations may be a useful probe of changes in the local cloud environment or the evolutionary state of molecular clouds.

This chapter proposes a new nonlinear model, called a log-linearized viscoelastic model, to estimate the dynamic characteristics of human arterial walls. The model employs mechanical impedance factors, including stiffness and viscosity, in beat-to-beat measured from biological signals such as arterial blood pressure and photoplethysmograms. The validity of the proposed method is determined by demonstrating how arterial wall impedance properties change during arm position testing in the vertical direction. The estimated stiffness indices are compared with those of the conventional linear model. Estimated impedance parameters with contribution ratios exceeding 0.97 were used for comparison. The results indicated that stiffness and viscosity decrease when the arm is raised and increase when it is lowered, in the same pattern as mean blood pressure. However, the changes seen in the proposed nonlinear viscoelastic parameter are smaller (P < 0.05) than those of the linear model. This result suggests that the proposed nonlinear arterial viscoelastic model is less affected by changes in mean intravascular pressure during arm position changes.

The ISO13660 standards made the objective evaluation of the characters and lines quick and simple, but the objective quality evaluation would make the objective attributes values of the characters and lines different from the quality evaluation based on HVS. Therefore the characters and lines quality evaluation model based on human visual system is proposed in this study. Firstly, to establish the subjective evaluation system and determine primary attributes that affected by the HVS. Secondly, it establishes the objective evaluation system based on ISO13660 standards. Finally, the linear regression model between the objective evaluation system and the subjective evaluation system is then established, and to evaluate the rationality of the linear regression model. The experimental results show that the quality evaluation model can evaluate the quality of characters and lines objectively and in accordance with the HVS.
