An image-based microscale analysis was conducted by using finite element method (FEM) to simulate the thermal residual stresses in directionally solidified eutectic (DSE) oxide ceramic composites from the thermal expansion and elastic properties and the microstructure features of the constituent phases. This microscale analysis allows a real simulation of morphologies of constituent phases such as size, array and shape. Meanwhile, this model can be applied not only for the calculation of thermal residual stresses, but also for the calculation of mechanical properties. In this work, simulations focus on the distribution of thermal residual stresses in the directionally solidified eutectic (DSE) Al2O3/ Y3Al5O12 (YAG) ceramic composite. A good agreement between simulated and measured thermal residual stresses was observed.

The contribution deals with the issue of mechanical response of the particulate ceramic composites used in microelectronic. Mechanical properties and behaviour of composites are highly influenced by residual stresses which are developed in material during cooling in manufacturing process due to the different coefficients of thermal expansions of individual constituents. The main aim of this paper is to estimate the elastic constants and strength of the selected particulate ceramic composites with considering the residual stresses. Three dimensional models and finite element method are used for numerical simulations. Results contribute to determination and better understanding of mechanical behaviour of the particulate ceramic composites.

This paper deals with the fracture behaviour of layered ceramic composite with residual stresses. The main goal is to investigate the effect of residual stresses and material interfaces on crack propagation by more complex 3D finite element models. The crack behaviour was described by analytical procedures based on linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) and generalized LEFM. The influence of laminate composition with residual stresses on critical values for crack propagation through the laminate interfaces was also determined. Good agreement has been found to exist between numerical results and experimental data. The results obtained can be used for a design of new layered composites with improved resistance against crack propagation.

In practical application, pipelines will inevitably experience bending and compression during manufacture, transportation and offshore installation. The mechanical behavior of tubes under combined axial compression and bending loads is investigated using experiments and finite element method in this paper. Tubes with D/t ratios in the range of 40 and 97 are adopted in the experiments. Then, the ultimate loads and the local buckling modes of tubes are studied. The commercial software ABAQUS is used to build FE models to simulate the load-shortening responses of tubes under combined loads. The results acquired from the ABAQUS simulation are compared with the ones from verification bending experiment, which are in good agreement with each other. The models in this paper are feasible to analyze the mechanical properties of tubes under combined axial compression and bending loads. The related results may be of interest to the manufacture engineers.

Glass-ceramic composite materials based on lead-borate glass and eucryptite – a compound with a negative coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CTE), along with the conditions for their production are studied in this paper. Effects of the amount and granulometric composition of the eucryptite as well as time/temperature processing conditions on the change of the linear thermal expansion coefficient of the sintered samples are also examined.

Effect of substrate conditions, including material type, thickness and radius of substrate, on thermal-shocking stresses of plasma spraying Sm2Zr2O7/ NiCrCoAlY TBCs was analyzed through finite element method. Results show that radial stresses decrease with time increasing, and they decrease with the increasing of distance from center to edge along radius. However, axial residual stresses increse abruptly at the edge of specimen. All residual stresses increse with incresing of thermal expansion coefficient of substrate. Radial stresses increase with substrate thickness increasing, however, they are not effectd by substrate thickness if it is great than 20mm.and axial residual stresses and shear stresses are not effected by the substrate thickness. The maximum values of axial stresses and shear stresses were not effected by sustrate radius. and values of radial stresses remian invariable when substrate radius is over 18mm.

Polymer derived ceramic composites have been developed for SOFC seals. The formation and properties of the ceramic composite derived from a mixture with polysiloxane and filler were investigated. In the presence of filler materials such as ZrO2 and AlCo, the thermal properties of the ceramic composite could be controlled. The mixtures with polymethylsiloxane and fillers were prepared and their conversions to ceramic composites by annealing in N2 atmosphere were studied. The microcrystalline composites with filler embedded in a silicon-boron-oxycarbide glass matrix were formed. The thermal expansion behaviors were measured and discussed.
