Cable-stayed self-anchored suspension composed bridges have novel structures and aesthetic appearance with complex system and difficulty for design and construction. In order to acquire a better knowledge of the load-carrying capability of this type of bridges, based on a real bridge and the theory of abnormal similarity, a full-bridge scaled down(1:20) test model was built to simulate the whole process of construction. The test results were preferably fit the theoretical calculation value. It can be seen that the design of the bridge was reasonable, and the accuracy of the calculation of finite element model was verified at the same time. The test and the related results can be used as the reference for the test and design of the similar bridges.

To investigate the seismic behavior of joint between special-shaped concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column and H-section steel beam, a pseudo-static test was carried out on five specimens with scale ratio of 1:2. The investigated factors include stiffening types of steel tube (multi-cell and tensile bar) and connection types (exterior diaphragm and vertical rib). The failure modes, hysteresis curves, skeleton curves, stress distribution, and joint shear deformation of specimens were analyzed to investigate the seismic behaviors of joints. The test results showed the connections of exterior diaphragm and vertical rib have good seismic behavior and can be identified as rigid joint in the frames with bracing system according to Eurocode 3. The joint of special-shaped column with tensile bars have better seismic performance by using through vertical rib connection. Furthermore, a finite element model was established and a parametric analysis with the finite element model was conducted to investigate the influences of following parameters on the joint stiffness: width-to-thickness ratio of column steel tube, beam-to-column linear stiffness ratio, vertical rib dimensions, and axial load ratio of column. Lastly, preliminary design suggestions were proposed.

In order to simulate the seismic behaviour of the prestressed high-strength concrete piles under working state, six full-scale prestressed high-strength concrete piles were tested under combined axial compression and cyclic horizontal loads. Different axial compression levels and prestressing levels of prestressed tendons were studied in this test programme. The failure mode, bending resistance, displacement ductility, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation of the prestressed high-strength concrete piles under different loading scenarios were measured and analysed. Test results indicated that the axial compression ratio and prestressing level of prestressed tendon significantly influenced the seismic performance of prestressed high-strength concrete piles. Theoretical models were developed to predict cracking, yielding and ultimate bending resistances of the prestressed high-strength concrete pile under combined compression and bending. Finite element model was also developed to simulate the ultimate strength behaviour of the prestressed high-strength concrete pile under combined compression and flexural bending. The accuracies of the theoretical and finite element model were checked through validations of their predictions against the reported test results.

In this article, the object of study is a three–layer honeycomb panel with fixing elements (FE), which are used for transporting the panel, and fixing it to the spacecraft. The goal of the work is to determine experimentally the load carrying capacity of the fixing elements under various types of loading, to determine the load carrying capacity of the honeycomb panel of the spacecraft at fixing points and further comparison of the experimental results with the finite element method results calculated by MSC.Patran / Nastran. A method for conducting static tests of fixing elements of a spacecraft honeycomb panel under an external load is described, a description of computer technology of a finite–element solution to the problem of static strength of a honeycomb panel structure in the MSC.Patran environment is presented, and a finite–element model of a honeycomb panel is designed. An assessment of the strength of a three–layer structure at fixing points was carried out, followed by validation of the finite–element model of a honeycomb panel. On the basis of the validated model, the evaluation of the strength of the honeycomb structure was carried out; based on results obtained, the conclusion has been made about the convergence of the results by the finite element method with the results obtained during the experiment.

When casting wet concrete into hollow steel tubular arch during the construction process of a concrete-filled steel tubular arch bridge, an initial stress (due to dead load, etc.) would be produced in the steel tube. In order to understand the influence of this initial stress on the strength of the concrete-filled steel tubular arch bridge, a total of four single tubular arch rib (bare steel first) specimens (concrete-filled steel tubular last) with various initial stress levels were constructed and tested to failure. The test results indicate that the initial stress has a large influence on the ultimate load-carrying capacity and ductility of the arch structure. The high preloading ratio will reduce significantly the strength and ductility that the maximum reductions are over 25%. Then, a finite element method was presented and validated using the test results. Based on this finite element model, a parametric study was performed that considered the influence of various parameters on the ultimate load-carrying capacity of concrete-filled steel tubular arches. These parameters included arch slenderness, rise-to-span ratio, loading method, and initial stress level. The analysis results indicate that the initial stress can reduce the ultimate loading capacity significantly, and this reduction has a strong relationship with arch slenderness and rise-to-span ratio. Finally, a method for calculating the preloading reduction factor of ultimate load-carrying capacity of single concrete-filled steel tubular arch rib structures was proposed based on the equivalent beam–column method.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine which of the ten material properties of the Hashin progressive damage model significantly affect the maximum load-carrying ability of center-notched carbon fiber panels under in-plane tension and out-of-plane bending. Design/methodology/approach The approach used is to calculate the maximum load using a finite element model for a range of material property values as specified by a fraction factorial design. The finite element model used has been experimentally validated in prior work. Findings Results showed that for the laminates considered, at most three and as few as one of the ten Hashin material properties significantly affected the magnitude of the maximum load. Practical implications While the results of this paper only specifically apply to the laminates included in the study, the results suggest that, in general, only a small number of the Hashin material properties affect laminate load-carrying ability. Originality/value Knowing which properties are significant is of value in selecting materials to optimize performance and also in determining which properties need to be known to a high accuracy.

An off-road motorcycle frame has been analyzed and modified to optimize its fatigue life. The fatigue life of the frame is very important to define the service life of the motorcycle. The strain levels on key parts of the frame were collected during experimental tests. It has been possible to locate the areas where the maximum stress level is reached. A finite element (FE) model of the frame has been developed and used for estimating its fatigue life. Static test bench results have been used to validate the FE model. The accuracy of the finite element model is good, the errors are always below 5% with respect to measured data. The mission profile of the motorcycle is dominated by off-road use, with stress levels close to yield point, so a strain-life approach has been applied for estimating the fatigue life of the frame. Particular attention has been paid to the analysis of the welded connections. A shell and a 3D FE model have been combined to simulate the stress histories at the welds. Two reference maneuvers have been considered as loading conditions. The computed stresses have been used to assess the life of the frame according to the notch stress approach (Radaj & Seeger). The method correlates the stress range in a idealized notch, characterized by a fictitious radius in the weld toe or root, to the fatigue life by using a single S-N curve. New technical frame layouts have been proposed and verified by means of the developed finite element model. The considered approach allows to speed up the design process and to reduce the testing phase.

Cable-stayed bridges have seen a wider application in recent years, with many having longer and longer spans. Modern cable-stayed bridges are using numerous cables to support the stiffing girders. Many cable dampers are installed to mitigate cable vibration. This paper focuses the attention on the effect of cable damper on the dynamic characteristics of the whole cable-stayed bridge, especially the modal damping. A practical model comprised of the cable, girder, and damper is developed to analyze the relationship between system modal damping and the performance of cable damper with complex mode method. A test model with cable, girder and damper was made to verify the theoretical results. A finite element model of a simplified cable-stayed bridge based on test model is adopted to assess the effects of cable dampers on the anti-seismic performance and wind-resistant behavior of the cable-stayed bridge. The results show that the cable dampers of cable-stayed bridge can increase the modal damping of the whole bridge.
