Article in the first quantitative analysis of milling process of material removal on the work piece model effects, using matrix perturbation theory gives the work piece modal approximation, fast algorithms. Major sources of uncertain factors analysis of milling process, based on the interval algebra, derivation of the work piece (or tool) interval characteristics of matrix, the use of interval finite element method for calculating the tool dynamic response of upper and lower bounds. Modal experimental results and theoretical predictions dovetailed.

Since no physical approach can be employed to study the mechanism in micro cutting, the molecular dynamics simulation is becoming more and more important. In this study, the results of molecular dynamics modeling and analysis on the nanometric machining on silicon surface are presented. According to the simulation, some phenomena in the nanometric cutting process are found. First, surface elastic rebound happens on the cut surface after cutter moving away. The value of the surface elastic rebound is calculated in the simulation. Second, the atoms near the corner of work piece swirl up following the cutter moving direction at the initial stage of removing atoms from the work piece. Third, the simulation results show that no matter how small material removal is, the burr is always formed at the edge of work piece.

AbstractThe high speed milling represents the most important process to produce parts in different fields such as aeronautics, automotive and mould. It allows obtaining parts with complex form and with the best surface quality. So, it remains essential to understand the impact of both the cutting force model and its parameters on the tool tip response. Consequently, the mastering of chatter vibration in milling and surface properties of the work piece is essential. In this paper, the simulation of machining is applied to determine the cutting forces distribution. A spindle system modeling is presented using a new approach: Both rigid and flexible modes of the spindle's shaft are taken into account. The shaft is discretized with the Timoshenko beam finite elements with different circular sections. Nonlinear electromagnetic loads exerted by AMBs are computed in terms of the nominal air gap between bearings and spindle, the control current and the displacement of each node. A parametric study is performed to determine the influence of some parameters, such as the feed rate, the tangential cutting coefficient, the spindle speed and the axial depth of the cut on the cutting forces and the chatter vibrations in milling.

Micro-milling is one of the most essential technologies to produce micro components, but due to the size effect, it has many special characteristics and challenges. The process can be characterised by strong vibrations, relatively large run-out and tool deformation, which directly affects the quality of the machined surface. This paper deals with a detailed investigation of the influence of cutting parameters on surface roughness and on the special characteristics of micro-milled surfaces. Several systematic series of experiments were carried out and analysed in detail. A five-axis micromachining centre and a two fluted, coated carbide micro-milling tool with a diameter of 500 µm were used for the tests. The experiments were conducted on AISI H13 hot-work tool steel and Böhler M303 martensitic corrosion resistance steel with a hardness of 50 HRC in order to gain relevant information of machining characteristics of potential materials of micro-injection moulding tools. The effect of the cutting parameters on the surface quality and on the ratio of Rz/ Ra was investigated in a comprehensive cutting parameter range. ANOVA was used for the statistical evaluation. A novel method is presented, which allows a detailed analysis of the surface profile and repetitions, and identify the frequencies that create the characteristic profile of the surface. The procedure establishes a connection between the frequencies obtained during the analysis of dynamics (forces, vibrations) of the micro-milling process and the characterising repetitions and frequencies of the surface.

Micro EDM milling process is accruing a lot of importance in micro fabrication of difficult to machine materials. Any complex shape can be generated with the help of the controlled cylindrical tool in the pre determined path. Due to the complex material removal mechanism on the tool and the work piece, a detailed parametric study is required. In this study, the influence of various process parameters on material removal mechanism is investigated. Experiments were planned as per Response Surface Methodology (RSM) – Box Behnken design and performed under different cutting conditions of gap voltage, capacitance, electrode rotation speed and feed rate. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to identify the level of importance of machining parameters on the material removal rate. Maximum material removal rate was obtained at Voltage (115V), Capacitance (0.4μF), Electrode rotational Speed (1000rpm), and Feed rate (18mm/min). In addition, a mathematical model is created to predict the material removal

Freeform optics fabrication has become one of the hottest topics in optics industry in recent years. Although it still remains a challenge, many have tried different ways of manufacturing it. Some have achieved degrees of success. By means of a Nanotech 350-FG five axis diamond turning machine, we too have successfully produced some prototype freeform optics and lens arrays with Slow Tool Servo and Milling method. The produced freeform optics are mainly for automobile LED headlamps and the lens arrays are for LED illumination. In order to produce the freeform optics, we developed our own DT Slow Tool Servo program which is capable of generating a DT program for diamond turning a universal/general 3D freeform surface. Slow Tool Servo technique and Diamond Milling technique were mainly employed to produce these freeform surfaces. The manufacturing process and machining parameter details will be given in the paper. The two main methods we used will be compared and discussed as well. In measuring the freeform surface, a 3D white light interferometer was used to scan and obtain the surface coordinates. The software made by ourselves enabled us to compare the measure results of the work piece with that of the design drawings. The deviation of our finished forms is within 5 um from that of the nominal. The surface quality Rq is about 10 nm. Measuring equipment and methodology will also be discussed in the paper.

A review of recent developments in multibody dynamics modeling and analysis is presented. Multibody dynamics is one of the fastest growing fields of applied mechanics. Multibody systems are increasingly being employed as models of physical systems such as robots, mechanisms, chains, cables, space structures, and biodynamic systems. Research activity in multibody dynamics has stimulated research in a number of subfields including formulation methods, system modeling, numerical procedures, and graphical representations. These are also discussed and reviewed.
