A Study on Flexural Performance of RC Beam Strengthened with UHTCC for Improved Durability

Ultra-high toughness cementitious composite (UHTCC) exhibits the pseudo-hardening feature when subjected to tensile load and has high tensile strain capacity of normally up to 3%. Also, UHTCC has a unique cracking behavior. From cracking up to ultimate tensile strain capacity, the crack width in UHTCC could be still kept below 100m. This paper presents the utilization of UHTCC to replace a layer of concrete surrounding the main flexural reinforcement in ordinary RC beam to improve flexural performance especially beam durability as UHTCC displays high toughness and shows multiple fine cracks. Analytical closed-form formulae for flexural capacity, curvature and deformation of UHTCC/RC composite beam derived based on the elastic beam theory is presented first. Subsequently, experimental results of two groups of different reinforcement ratios of UHTCC/RC beams and control RC beams tested under flexural loading to verify the feasibility of analytical formulae as well as to examine the performance improvement of UHTCC/RC composite beam over the control beam is presented. Moment-curvature curves and load-mid span displacement curves for the tested beams are compared with the theoretical analysis. A good agreement between experimental and analytical results is found. The experimental results show that the use of a layer of UHTCC in RC beams can enhance both flexural capacity and ductility. The improvement is not significant with the increase in reinforcement ratio; however, the maximum crack width under service load even in the case of lightly reinforced beams can be limited within 0.1mm.

This paper summarizes recent advances in strain-hardening ultra-high-performance concretes (UHPC) with synthetic fibers, with emphasis on their tensile properties. The composites described here usually contain about 2.0% high-density polyethylene (PE) fibers. Compared to UHPC with steel fibers, strain-hardening UHPC with synthetic fibers generally show a higher tensile ductility, lower modulus in the cracked state, and relatively lower compressive strength. The tensile strain capacity of strain-hardening UHPC with synthetic fibers increases with increasing tensile strength. The f’cftεt/w index (compressive strength × tensile strength × tensile strain capacity/tensile crack width) is used to compare the overall performance of strain-hardening UHPC. Moreover, a probabilistic approach is applied to model the crack width distributions of strain-hardening UHPC, and estimate the critical tensile strain in practical applications, given a specific crack width limit and cumulative probability. Recent development on strain-hardening UHPC with the use of seawater, sea-sand and PE fibers are also presented.

Strain-based design (SBD) plays an important role in pipeline design and assessment of pipelines subjected to geo-hazards. Under such hazards, a pipe can be subjected to substantial plastic strains, leading to tensile failure at locations of girth weld flaws. For SBD, the finite element method (FEM) can be a reliable tool to calculate the tensile strain capacity (TSC) for better design in pipelines. This study aims to investigate the ductile fracture properties for specific vintage pipeline steel (API 5L grade of X52) using the extended finite element method (XFEM). Eight full-scale tests were simulated using the commercial finite element analysis software ABAQUS Version 6.17. Maximum principal strain is used to assess the damage initiation using the cohesive zone model (CZM) when the crack evolution is evaluated by fracture energy release. A proper set of damage parameters for the X52 materials was calibrated based on the ability of the model to reproduce the experimental results. These experimental results included the tensile strain, applied load, endplate rotation, and crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD). This study describes a methodology for validation of the XFEM and the proper damage parameters required to model crack initiation and propagation in X52 grades of pipeline.

PurposeThe structural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams made with waste foundry sand (WFS) was examined in this study by using investigational data. Five RC beams were tested in this present work, four beams with varying WFS content and one beam with natural aggregates. The factors considered for studying the flexural performance of RC beams were WFS content (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%), 15% Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) is used as supplementary cementitious (SCM) content for all beams and tension reinforcement ratio (0.95%). The crack pattern of the RC beams with WFS (RCB1, RCB2, RCB3 and RCB4) was similar to that of referral beam–RCB0. The RC beams made with WFS (RCB1, RCB2, RCB3 and RCB4) show lesser number of cracks than referral beam–RCB0. It is observed that RCB1 beam shows higher ultimate moment carrying capacity than other RC beams. A detailed assessment of the investigational results and calculations based on IS: 456-2000 code for flexural strength exhibited that the present provisions conservatively predicts the flexural strength and crack width of RC beams with WFS and 15% GGBS. It is suggested that 10% WFS can be used to make RC beam.Design/methodology/approachIn this present work, four RC beams made WFS and one RC beam made with natural aggregates. 15% GGBS is used as SCM for all RC beams. After casting of RC beams, the specimens were cured with wetted gunny bags for 28 days. After curing, RC beams like RCB0, RCB1, RCB2, RCB3 and RCB4 were tested under a four-point loading simply supported condition. An assessment of investigational results and calculations as per IS: 456-2000 code provisions has been made for flexural strength and crack width of RC beams with WFS and 15% GGBS. The crack pattern is also studied.FindingsFrom this experimental results, it is found that 10% WFS can be used for making RC beam. The RCB1 with 10% WFS shows better flexural performance than other RC beams. RC beams made with WFS show lesser number of cracks than referral beam–RCB0. IS: 456-2000 code provisions can be safely used to predict the moment capacity and crack width of RC beams with WFS and 15% GGBS.Originality/valueBy utilization of WFS, the dumping of waste and environmental pollution can be reduced. By experimental investigation, it is suggested that 10% WFS can be used to make RC structural members for low cost housing projects.

This is the second paper in a three-paper series related to the development of tensile strain models. The fundamental basis of the models [1] and evaluation of the models against experiment data [2] are presented in two companion papers. This paper presents the structure and formulation of the models. The philosophy and development of the multi-tier tensile strain models are described. The tensile strain models are applicable for linepipe grades from X65 to X100 and two welding processes, i.e., mechanized GMAW and FCAW/SMAW. The tensile strain capacity (TSC) is given as a function of key material properties and weld and flaw geometric parameters, including pipe wall thickness, girth weld high-low misalignment, pipe strain hardening (Y/T ratio), weld strength mismatch, girth weld flaw size, toughness, and internal pressure. Two essential parts of the tensile strain models are the crack driving force and material’s toughness. This paper covers principally the crack driving force. The significance and determination of material’s toughness are covered in the companion papers [1,2].

Pipelines can be subjected to significant amounts of tensile forces due to geotechnical movements like slope instabilities and seismic activities as well as due to frost heave and thaw cycles in arctic regions. The tensile strain capacity εtcrit of pipelines is crucial in the prediction of rupture and loss of containment capability in these load cases. Currently the Oil and Gas Pipeline Systems code CSA Z662-11 0 contains equations for the prediction of εtcrit as a function of geometry and material properties of the pipeline. These equations resulted from extensive experimental and numerical studies carried out by Wang et al [2]–[6] using curved wide plate tests on pipes having grades X65 and higher. Verstraete et al 0 conducted curved wide plate tests at the University of Ghent which also resulted in tensile strain capacity prediction methods and girth weld flaw acceptability criteria. These criteria are included in the European Pipeline Research Group (EPRG) Tier 2 guidelines. Furthermore Verstrate et al 0 introduced a pressure correction factor of 0.5 in order to include the effect of internal pressure in the tensile strain capacity predictions in a conservative way. Further research by Wang et al with full scale pipes having an internal pressure factor of 0.72 also showed that εtcrit decreases in the presence of internal pressure [10]–[15]. In their work, Wang et al presented a clear methodology for the design of full scale experiments and numerical simulations to study the effect of internal pressure on the tensile strain capacity of pipes with girth weld flaws [10]–[15]. However, there has been limited testing to enable a precise understanding of the tensile strain capacity of pipes with grades less than X65 as a function of girth weld flaw sizes and the internal pressure. In this paper the experimental setup for the testing of grade X52 full scale specimens with 12″ diameter and ¼″ wall thickness is demonstrated. In the scope of this research 8 full scale specimens will be tested and the results will be used to formulate the tensile strain capacity of X52 pipes under internal pressure. The specimens are designed for the simultaneous application of displacement controlled tensile loading and the internal pressure. Finite element analysis is applied in the optimization process for the sizes of end plates and connection elements. Also the lengths of the full scale specimens are determined based on the results from finite element analysis. The appropriate lengths are chosen in such a way that between the location of the girth weld flaw and the end plates uniform strain zones could be obtained. The internal pressure in these experiments is ranging between pressure values causing 80% SMYS and 30% SMYS hoop stress. The end plates and connection elements of the specimens are designed in such a way that the tensile displacement load is applied with an eccentricity of 10% of the pipe diameter with the purpose of increasing the magnitude of tensile strains at the girth weld flaw location. The results of two full scale experiments of this research program are presented. The structural response from the experiments is compared to the finite element simulation. The remote strain values of the experiment are found to be higher than the εtcrit values predicted by the equations in 0.

To improve the greenness and deformability of engineered cementitious composites (ECC), recycled powder (RP) from construction and demolition waste with an average size of 45 μm and crumb rubber (CR) of two particle sizes (40CR and 80CR) were used as supplements in the mix. In the present study, fly ash and silica sand used in ECC were replaced by RP (50% and 100% by weight) and CR (13% and 30% by weight), respectively. The tension test and compression test demonstrated that RP and CR incorporation has a positive effect on the deformability of ECC, especially on the tensile strain capacity. The highest tensile strain capacity was up to 12%, which is almost 3 times that of the average ECC. The fiber bridging capacity obtained from a single crack tension test and the matrix fracture toughness obtained from 3-point bending were used to analyze the influence of RP and CR at the meso-scale. It is indicated that the replacement of sand by CR lowers the matrix fracture toughness without decreasing the fiber bridging capacity. Accordingly, an explanation was achieved for the exceeding deformability of ECC incorporated with RP and CR based on the pseudo-strain hardening (PSH) index.
