The results of X-ray diffraction analysis of macroscopic stresses σ and crystallite size D in oxide layers are presented in this contribution. The oxide layers were formed on tubular specimens of Zircaloy 4 and Zr1Nb alloys which were simultaneously oxidized for various times under temperature transient conditions (oxidation in water at 360 °C with a short-time shock in steam at 500 °C). A qualitative relation was outlined between the residual stresses in oxide layers and corrosion kinetics of the alloys under investigation.

The present study presents the relevance of X-ray diffraction analysis using synchrotron light in the identification of phases with low intensity peaks. Niobium sheets were coated with monetite and then converted to hydroxyapatite in an alkali solution. Octacalcium phosphate was identified as an intermediate phase in the conversion monetite-hydroxyapatite.

The Bi-based oxide superconducting wire is one of the most promising materials for practical uses such as electric power transmission, electromagnets and so on. For the higher performances required in these applications, it is necessary to increase the critical current (Ic). We have carried out synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction analysis to improve our manufacturing processes and thus to achieve higher Ic. We have performed in situ X-ray diffraction measurements during the sintering and cooling processes, and observed the decrease of Bi-2223(=(Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox) phase during the cooling process. We have also evaluated the distribution of the crystal orientation in whole wire thickness, by measuring the rocking curves. We have observed that the distribution of the crystal orientation is improved by a refinement of the process conditions.

The FeS solid lubricating coatings were prepared on the AISI 5140 steel by chemical bath deposition (CBD) coating technique at various temperatures from 30 to 90 °C. The influence of temperature on microstructure, microcracks, and tribological properties was characterized and studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The results show that the coating mainly consists of FexSy (FeS, FeS2, and Fe1−xS), and has a chrysanthemum-shaped (CS) morphology composed of the FeS crystal petals. The CS particles nucleate at about 30 °C, rapidly grow and reach a peak thickness at about 50–70 °C, and finally disappear and are replaced by disordered thick petals at 90 °C. The wear resistance of the steel was improved obviously after introducing of FeS coatings, owing to that the coatings can provide better lubrication and improve the wear resistance.

The present work reports the results of structural and optical investigations in samples of natural dolomite, subjected to thermal treatment at different temperatures (500 ℃ to 700 ℃) and times (one up to three hours). The motivation is the evaluation of the changes that may occur in carbonaceous asteroids and meteorites, respectively, subjected to the action of the solar radiation and heated during the fall in the atmosphere. We carried out scanning electron microscopy, electron dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, optical reflectance and photoluminescence measurements
