In this study, the effect of strain rate on the strength and the absorbed energy of polylactic acid resin foam (PLA-foam), which is generally known as one of carbon-neutral and environmentally-friendly polymers, were examined by a series of compression tests at various strain rates from 0.001 to 750 s-1. For the measurements of the impact load and the displacement of specimen, a special load cell and a high-speed video camera were used, respectively. The flow stress of the PLA-foam strongly depends upon not only strain rate but also density of specimens. Thus, a new technique to eliminate the effect of the difference in the specimen density was proposed and successfully applied. It was also found that the strain-rate dependency of PLA-foam can be expressed by a simple power law.

Coupler rubber buffers are widely used in high-speed trains, to dissipate the impact energy between vehicles. The rubber buffer consists of two groups of rubbers, which are pre-compressed and then installed into the frame body. This paper specifically focuses on the energy absorption characteristics of the rubber buffers. Firstly, quasi-static compression tests were carried out for one and three pairs of rubber sheets, and the relationship between the energy absorption responses, i.e. Eabn  =  n ×  Eab1, Edissn =  n ×  Ediss1, and Ean =  Ea1, was obtained. Next, a series of quasi-static tests were performed for one pair of rubber sheet to investigate the energy absorption performance with different compression ratios of the rubber buffers. Then, impact tests with five impact velocities were conducted, and the coupler knuckle was destroyed when the impact velocity was 10.807 km/h. The results of the impact tests showed that with the increase of the impact velocity, the Eab, Ediss, and Ea of the rear buffer increased significantly, but the three responses of the front buffer did not increase much. Finally, the results of the impact tests and quasi-static tests were contrastively analyzed, which showed that with the increase of the stroke, the values of Eab, Ediss, and Ea increased. However, the increasing rates of the impact tests were higher than that of the quasi-static tests. The maximum value of Ea was 68.76% in the impact tests, which was relatively a high value for the vehicle coupler buffer. The energy capacity of the rear buffer for dynamic loading was determined as 22.98 kJ.

Adhesives are widely used in our life and industrial world. However, it is difficult to characterize their mechanical properties because those strongly depend on environmental and mechanical conditions such as temperature, humidity or strain rate. In this paper, we focus on the strain rate dependence of the interfacial strength and investigate the interfacial strength by peel tests under several peel rates. The results show that, in lower rate region (under 1.0 mm/s), the interfacial strength is constant and, in transition region (1.0 to 10 mm/s) the interface strength increased with the peel rate. In middle rate region (10 to 103 mm/s), the interfacial strength is constant again. Over 103 mm/s region, the interfacial strength drops and became lower than those in middle rate cases. From the observation of peeling front by a high speed video camera, the deformation behavior of adhesives changes with the peel rate.􀀁Finite element analysis by using cohesive zone model is also conducted, and influence of the rate dependency of adhesive and base material is discussed.

Small-scale blast tests were carried out to observe and measure the influence of sandy soil towards explosive blast intensity. The tests were to simulate blast impact imparted by anti-vehicular landmine to a lightweight armoured vehicle (LAV). Time of occurrence of the three phases of detonation phase in soil with respect to upward translation time of the test apparatus were recorded using high-speed video camera. At the same time the target plate acceleration was measured using shock accelerometer. It was observed that target plate deformation took place at early stage of the detonation phase before the apparatus moved vertically upwards. Previous data of acceleration-time history and velocity-time history from air blast detonation were compared. It was observed that effects of soil funnelling on blast wave together with the impact from soil ejecta may have contributed to higher blast intensity that characterized detonation in soil, where detonation in soil demonstrated higher plate velocity compared to what occurred in air blast detonation.

Abstract A dynamic elastoplastic compression model of Norway spruce for virtual computer optimization of mechanical pulping processes was developed. The empirical wood behaviour was fitted to a Voigt-Kelvin material model, which is based on quasi static compression and high strain rate compression tests (QSCT and HSRT, respectively) of wood at room temperature and at high temperature (80–100°C). The effect of wood fatigue was also included in the model. Wood compression stress-strain curves have an initial linear elastic region, a plateau region and a densification region. The latter was not reached in the HSRT. Earlywood (EW) and latewood (LW) contributions were considered separately. In the radial direction, the wood structure is layered and can well be modelled by serially loaded layers. The EW model was a two part linear model and the LW was modelled by a linear model, both with a strain rate dependent term. The model corresponds well to the measured values and this is the first compression model for EW and LW that is based on experiments under conditions close to those used in mechanical pulping.

The Split Hopkinson Bar (SHB) technique is used for high strain rate testing of T800/F3900 composite in compression, tension and shear. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is used for measuring the full-field deformation on the surface of the specimen by using Shimadzu HPV-X2 high-speed video camera. Compression tests have been done on specimens machined from a unidirectional laminate in the 0°and 90° directions. Tensile tests were done in the 90° direction. Shear tests were done by using a notched specimen in a compression SHB apparatus. To study the effect of strain rate, quasi-static testing was also done using DIC and specimens with the same geometry as in the SHB tests. The results show that the DIC technique provides accurate strain measurements even at strains that are smaller than 1%. No strain rate effect is observed in compression in the 0° direction and significant strain rate effects are observed in compression and tension in the 90° direction, and in shear.

In high-speed gear drive and power transmission, system impact failure mode always occurs due to the sudden impact and shock loading during the system in running. Therefore, study on the amount of impact energy that can be absorbed by a gear is vital. Impact test equipment has been designed and modelled for the purpose to study the impact energy on gear tooth. This paper mainly focused on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of impact energy that occurred during simulation involving the impact test equipment modelling. The simulation was conducted using Abaqus software on critical parts of the test equipment to simulate the impact event and generate impact data for analysis. The load cell in the model was assumed to be free fall at a certain height which gives impact load to the test gear. Three different type of material for the test gear were set up in this simulation. Results from the simulation show that each material possesses different impact energy characteristic. Impact energy values increased along with the height of load drop. AISI 1040 were found to be the toughest material at 3.0m drop that could withstand up to 44.87N.m of impact energy. These data will be used to validate data in physical experiments in further study.


Results of earlier investigations of dynamic yield phenomena are reviewed. Experiments are described in which a mild steel specimen is subjected a to compressive impact load causing yield in 25 to 30 μs . Stress-time curves are obtained and analyzed in terms of wave propagation, and a dynamic stress-strain relation is derived. Micrographs of specimens after dynamic yielding show that coarse slip does not occur, though there is some evidence of fine slip and grain boundary movement. Static compression tests on dynamically yielded specimens show that less hardening is caused by dynamic strain than by the same amount of static strain. The results are discussed in terms of dislocation theory.

A study of the normal impact of liquid droplets on a dry horizontal substrate is presented in this paper. The impact dynamics, spreading and recoil behavior are captured using a high-speed digital video camera at 2000 frames per second. A digital image processing software was used to determine the drop spread and height of the liquid on the surface from each frame. To ascertain the effects of liquid viscosity and surface tension, experiments were conducted with four liquids (water, ethanol, propylene glycol and glycerin) that have vastly different fluid properties. Three different Weber numbers (20, 40, and 80) were considered by altering the height from which the drop is released. The high-speed photographs of impact, spreading and recoil are shown and the temporal variations of dimensionless drop spread and height are provided in the paper. The results show that changes in liquid viscosity and surface tension significantly affect the spreading and recoil behavior. For a fixed Weber number, lower surface tension promotes greater spreading and higher viscosity dampens spreading and recoil. Using a simple scale analysis of energy balance, it was found that the maximum spread factor varies as Re1/5 when liquid viscosity is high and viscous effects govern the spreading behavior.
