The Mg-6Zn-2Si alloy was processed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) for 4 passes and 8 passes at 573K, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy before and after ECAP were studied. The results show that Chinese script type interphase of Mg2Si was crushed into dispersed particles, and significant grain refinement was also introduced to the matrix phase (α-Mg) and Mg51Zn20 phase after 4 passes of ECAP. The yield strength was increased by 180%, elongation by 140% and tensile strength by 75%. The microstructure and mechanical properties remained reasonably constant between 4 and 8 passes of ECAP. The mechanism of improvement on microstructure and mechanical properties of the experimental alloy by subjecting ECAP was also investigated.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ61-4Si magnesium alloy before and after equal channel angular processing (ECAP) were studied. Results show that the matrix α-Mg and divorced eutectic β-Mg17Al12are refined and chinese script type Mg2Si phases are broken to dispersed particles after ECAP. The mechanical properties of the alloy after ECAP are significantly improved. After 4 passes of ECAP, the yield strength is increased from 50MPa to 109 MPa, tensile strength from 129MPa to 237MPa, elongation from 6% to 22%, and hardness from 61.2HBS to71.5HBS. The modification mechanism for microstructure and mechanical properties of the experimental alloy by ECAP was analyzed.

Cyclic channel die compression (CCDC) of AZ31-1.7 wt.% Si alloy was performed up to 5 passes at 623 K in order to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of compressed alloys. The results show that multi-pass CCDC is very effective to refine the matrix grain and Mg2Si phases. After the alloy is processed for 5 passes, the mean grain size decreases from 300 μm of as-cast to 8 μm. Both dendritic and Chinese script type Mg2Si phases break into small polygonal pieces and distribute uniformly in the matrix. The tensile strength increases prominently from 118 MPa to 216 MPa, whereas the hardness of alloy deformed 5 passes only increase by 8.4% compared with as-cast state.

Bulky sample was made by using TIG wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology, in which Ф1.6 mm filler wire of in-situ TiB2/Al-Si composites was selected as deposition metal, following by T6 heat treatment. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the bulky sample before and after heat treatment were analyzed. Experimental results showed that the texture of the original samples parallel to the weld direction and perpendicular to the weld direction was similar consisting of columnar dendrites and equiaxed crystals. After T6 heat treatment, the hardness of the sample was increased to 115.85 HV from 62.83 HV, the yield strength of the sample was 273.33 MPa, the average tensile strength was 347.33 MPa, and the average elongation after fracture was 7.96%. Although pore defects existed in the fracture, yet the fracture of the sample was ductile fracture.

Annealed oxygen-free and tough-pitch copper samples have been processed by equalchannel angular pressing (ECAP) by route BC. The samples included 8 x 8 mm section pieces and a 40 mm diameter bar. Thermal stability was assessed based on the changes in the standard mechanical properties (conventional yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, proportional elongation and contraction) after annealing at different temperatures for 1 hour. Thermal stability of the same grade of material has been found to be different for different batches and to depend on the structural conditions of deformed material. The zone of thermal stability for copper of the two grades of interest does not depend on the material’s chemical composition.

The Mg96Y3Zn1 alloy processed by equal channel angular pressing has been investigated. It was found that the Mg96Y3Zn1 alloy processed by ECAP obtained ultrafine grains and exhibits excellent mechanical properties. After ECAP, the average grain size of Mg96Y3Zn1 alloy refined to about 400 nm. The highest strengths with yield strength of 381.45MPa and ultimate tensile strength of 438.33MPa were obtained after 2 passes at 623K. It was found that cracks were preferentially initiated and propagated in the interior of X-phase during the tensile test. As a result, the elongation of alloy is decreased with pass number increasing.

The changes of the microstructure and mechanical properties of T23 steel were investigated during high temperature aging at 625 °C up to 3000 h. The results showed that the bainitic lath microstructure first decreased and then totally disappeared with the increase of aging time, the size of the carbides gradually increased and the recovery occurred after aging for 1000 h. The contents of W, Mo elements in the matrix after aging for 3000 h were remarkably decreased by 27.6% and 45% compared with the as-received state. However, no M6C carbides formed in spite of the obvious desolution transformation of W, Mo. Both the yield strength and the tensile strength at room and high temperature were decreased with the increase of aging time at 625 °C, and the tensile strength at high temperature after aging for 3000 h exhibited the largest of decline compared with the as-received state. The main reasons for the decrease of the mechanical properties related to the microstructure variations, such as the size increase of the M23C6 carbides, the dissolution of the bainite lath microstructure and the occurrence of the recovery. Meanwhile, the desolution of W, Mo elements plays an important role in the decrease of the mechanical properties.

In this paper, the effect of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) on microstructure and mechanical properties of hypereutectic Al-20%Mg2Si and Al-15%Mg2Si, as well as hypoeutectic Al-10%Mg2Si composites has been investigated. After fabricating the composites by in-situ casting, the composites were processed using the ECAP process up to two passes at room temperature. Microstructural studies have been carried out using a field emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. Mechanical properties were also documented using Vickers microhardness and shear punch tests. In the hypereutectic composites, a decrease in the average size of pro-eutectic Mg2Si (Mg2Sip) particles, breakages in eutectic networks, and lengthening of the Al (α) phase in direction of shear bands were observed after the ECAP process. For instance, the average size of Mg2Sip Particles in Al-20%Mg2Si composite reduced from 40 to 17 μm after 2 passes of ECAP. Furthermore, a uniform distribution of Mg2Sip particles was developed in the matrix. In hypoeutectic composite, the ECAP process caused a uniform distribution of eutectic Mg2Si (Mg2SiE) in the matrix that considered a favorable microstructure. Microhardness measurements and shear punch results showed an ascending trend after each pass of ECAP for all specimens. For example, microhardness and shear strength of Al-20%Mg2Si increased from 88 HV and 109 MPa to 119 HV and 249 MPa after two passes indicating 35% and 34% increments, respectively. Density and porosity calculations by Archimedes principle revealed that the density of the composites increased after two passes of ECAP due to the reduction of porosity.

Titanium VT1-0 was processed by four passes of equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) using two routes, BC and C. Pressed samples had a square section with a side length of 8 mm. Mechanical properties at tension (tensile strength, conventional yield strength and elongation) were determined at 9 points across the sample using small-size specimens, 1.5 mm in diameter, cut out along the pressing direction. Heterogeneity in the mechanical properties across the sample was determined based on the value of the variation coefficient. One can observe that heterogeneity in the mechanical properties generally tends to decrease with the number of ECAP passes.

The as-cast pure magnesium (Mg), with a purity of 99.99%, was hot-extruded at 300 o C to prepare a Mg bar with a diameter of 8 mm. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the sample before and after extrusion weis obviously refined with a large number of subgrains rather than equre investigated. The results show that the asextruded microstructure iaxed grains. (10 1 2) tensile twins can be observed significantly in the microstructure at this temperature. Mechanical properties including yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) increased greatly but uniform elongation (UE) decreased slightly as a result of work hardening.
