Chromium depletion in AISI304 stainless steel can lead to intergranular corrosion due to temperature conditions and degree of deformation, and consequently to materials failure. The aim of this work is to study the effect of sensitization treatment on the corrosion resistance in AISI304 stainless steel after solution heat treatment at 1,000°C. Sensitization treatments were carried out at 670°C for 1 h, 2h, 5h and 10h in the electrical furnace. The intergranular corrosion resistance of the sensitized specimens was evaluated by double loop electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation test. The microstructure of the specimens before and after the corrosion tests was observed through optical and scanning electron microscope. Solution treatment shows the dual structure, however, aging for 5 hours depicts the ditch structure. The ratio of current density increased as a function of aging time resulted in increase in the degree of sensitization.

Sensitization degree of the austenitic stainless steel welded joints was investigated by electrochemical methods of the double loop electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (DL EPR) in H2SO4 + KSCN solution, and by the measurement of corrosion potential of the steel in the drop of the solution of HNO3 + FeCl3 + HCl. The welded joints were tested by X-ray radiographic method in order to check the presence of the weld defects. Grain size of the base metal and the welded joints were determined by optical microscopy. Good agreement between the results obtained by different electrochemical methods was obtained. Heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the austenitic stainless steel welded joints has shown significant degree of sensitization. The double loop electrochemical potentiokinetic method gave quantitative evidence about susceptibility of the stainless steel to intergranular corrosion.

The influence of the microstructure of the X5CrNi18-10 stainless steel welded joint on its resistance to general, pitting, and intergranular corrosion was analysed. The structure of weld metal, heat affected zone (HAZ) and base metal before and after electrochemical testing was analysed using SEM/EDS. The influence of the roughness level of the welded joint on its resistance to the mentioned types of corrosion was examined as well. Although the degree of sensitization of HAZ was significantly lower than the limit value, HAZ showed a noticeably greater tendency to general and pitting corrosion than weld metal and base metal. Polishing has been shown to significantly improve the corrosion resistance of HAZ than in the case of other parts of the welded joint.

In this paper, shielded metal arc welding on the dissimilar joint between 2205 duplex stainless steel and composite bimetallic plates (304 L stainless steel/10CrNi3MoV steel) with a filler metal E2209 was performed. Furthermore, the microstructure, phase, mechanical properties and intergranular corrosion resistance of the joints were investigated and element distributions of the interfaces were characterized. The results show that austenite transformed to ferrite under the influence of welding thermal cycle, and then a large amount of ferrite appeared in heat affected zone (HAZ) of 2205 duplex stainless steel. Coarse bainite grains were formed in HAZ of the 10CrNi3MoV steel near the fusion line with high temperature welding thermal cycle. Fine granular bainite was also generated in HAZ of 10CrNi3MoV steel due to the relatively short exposure time to the active temperature of grain growth. Local peak temperature near the base 10CrNi3MoV steel was still high enough to recrystallize the 10CrNi3MoV steel to form partial-recrystallization HAZ due to phase change. The filler metal was compatible with the three kinds of base materials. The thickness of the elemental diffusion interfaces layers was about 100 µm. The maximum microhardness value was obtained in the HAZ of 2205 duplex stainless steel (287 ± 14 HV), and the minimum one appeared in HAZ of SS304L (213 ± 5 HV). The maximum tensile strength of the welded joint was about 670 ± 6 MPa, and the tensile specimens fractured in ductile at matrix of the composite bimetallic plates. The impact energy of the weld metal and HAZ of the 10CrNi3MoV steel tested at –20 °C were 274 ± 6 J and 308 ± 5 J, respectively. Moreover, the intergranular corrosion resistance of the weldment including 304 L stainless steel, weld metal, HAZs and 2205 duplex stainless steel was in good agreement with the functional design requirements of materials corrosion resistance.

Abstract CarTech 347 is a niobium+tantalum stabilized austenitic stainless steel. Like Type 321 austenitic stainless steel, it has superior intergranular corrosion resistance as compared to typical 18-8 austenitic stainless steels. Since niobium and tantalum have stronger affinity for carbon than chromium, carbides of those elements tend to precipitate randomly within the grains instead of forming continuous patterns at the grain boundaries. CarTech 347 should be considered for applications requiring intermittent heating between 425 and 900 °C (800 and 1650 °F). This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and tensile properties. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, and joining. Filing Code: SS-1339. Producer or source: Carpenter Technology Corporation.

Abstract Martensitic stainless steels are used in a large number of various industrial applications, e.g. molds for plastic injections and glass moldings, automotive components, cutting tools, surgical and dental instruments. The improvement of their tribological and corrosion properties is a problem of high interest especially in medical applications, where patient safety becomes a priority. The paper covers findings from plasma nitrided AISI 440B (PN-EN or DIN X90CrMoV18) stainless steel corrosion resistance studies. Conventionally heat treated and plasma nitrided in N2:H2 reaction gas mixture (50:50, 65:35 and 80:20, respectively) in two different temperature ranges (380 or 450°C) specimens groups were examined. Microscopic observations and electrochemical corrosion tests were performed using a variety of analytical techniques. As obtained findings show, plasma nitriding of AISI 440B stainless steel, regardless of the process temperature, results in reduction of corrosion current density. Nevertheless, applying thermo-chemical process which requires exceeding temperature of about 400°C is not recommended due to increased risk of steel sensitization to intergranular and stress corrosion. According to the results, material ion nitrided in 450°C underwent leaching corrosion processes, which led to significant disproportion in chemical composition of the corroded and corrosion-free areas. The authors suggest further research into corrosion process of plasma nitrided materials and its degradation products.
