This paper examines the structural and mechanical behavior characteristics of the concrete-filled double circular steel tube (CFDT) fabricated with the installation of shape memory alloys (SMAs) and reinforcement bars in the inner and outer steel tubes, the inner-outer diameter ratio (Di/Do), and the concrete strength as the main variables. Towards this end, the displacement ductility, crack patterns, load-central deflection relationship, displacement ductility, and flexural shear strength were compared and analyzed. The results verified that a change in the Di/Do has significant effects on the crack pattern, maximum load, and ductility. The specimens with SMAs installed between the inner and outer steel tubes generally showed good results.

This study examined the effects of the inside-outside diameter ratio (Di/D0), concrete strength, and inside-outside reinforcement type of steel tube on the structural behavior of concrete-filled double-skin steel tubular (CFDT) beams. Towards this end, the failure type, load-deflection relationship, ultimate strength, and displacement ductility were compared and analyzed. The results showed that the maximum load-deflection and failure type are affected by the Di/D0 and the reinforcement method. Furthermore, the higher the Di/D0 was, the lower the restraint stress and maximum load became.

This study was conducted to experimentally investigate the behavior of recycled concrete-filled circular steel tube (RCFST) columns subjected to cyclic loading. Ten specimens were prepared and tested. Four parameters were used to characterize seismic behavior: the replacement percentage of recycled coarse aggregate, slenderness ratio, axial compression level, and steel ratio. A novel calculation method for the bearing capacity for RCFST columns is established. The failure processes and modes of RCFST columns are found to be similar to normal concrete-filled steel tube columns. Varying the replacement percentage of recycled coarse aggregate has little effect on the hysteresis curves of the RCFST columns. The RCFST columns also show seismic performance similar to that of concrete-filled steel tubes. The displacement ductility of all specimens is larger than 3.0 and the equivalent viscous damping coefficients corresponding to the ultimate load range from 0.305 to 0.460.

In order to research the interface bond-slip behaviors of recycled aggregate concrete-filled square steel tube (RACFSST), ten specimens using waste concrete were designed for launch test. The three changing parameters were concrete strength grade, embedded length and recycled coarse aggregate replacement rate. The load–slip curves of square steel tubes and recycled aggregate concrete were obtained, and starting bond strength and ultimate bond strength influenced by each changing parameter were analyzed. The results show that the replacement rate had a slight influence on the starting bond strength and ultimate bond strength, while the embedded length had the opposite effect. The shorter embedded length specimens had larger bond strength. The concrete strength had a relatively large influence on them.

Previous researchers studied the behavior of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) columns confined with steel tubes. However, predicting the influence of the confinement effect and the compressive capacity of these columns has yet to be further examined. Currently, the Canadian design code limits for reinforced concrete do not reach the strength nor the strain produced by using UHPC. This project uses the Canadian design methods for a cross-section of UHPC to form a column interaction curve and compared it with six test specimens. The effects of steel tube confinement will also be examined. Additionally, the Eurocode 4 (EC4) method, which includes the strengths of UHPC and confinement of steel tube, was used to formulate another column interaction curve. The results show that the Canadian code severely underestimates the design strength of confined UHPC while the EC4 provides much more accurate results.

By introducing the reduction coefficient of concrete strength and the equivalent restriction reduction coefficient, the non-uniform confinement force of square steel tube to its core concrete is turned to that of equivalent circular steel tube. Then the ultimate load calculation formula for the solid multibarrel tube-confined concrete short columns (CHS inner and SHS outer) is derived based on the Unified Strength Theory(UST),in which the double restriction effect and the decrease of longitudinal stress because of the hoop tensile tension are considered. The influence of intermediate principal stress on the ultimate load is studied and the failure mechanism is discussed. The applicability of the formulas is testified and the results show that the formulas have significance in exerting material potential.

Recently, the concrete filled stainless steel tubes (CFSST) columns are widely applied in modern construction due to its aesthetic appearance, high corrosion resistant and less construction cost. The current study aims to evaluate the behavior of CFSST column with square hollow section (SHS) numerically under axial compressive load by using ABAQUS software. A good consistency had achieved between the numerical and experimental test results in terms of load-displacement behaviour and ultimate strength with a maximum difference equal to 2%. Intensive parametric studies had been conducted to determine the effects of stainless steel tubes and concrete properties on the ultimate load capacity of CFSST column. The results proved that the stainless steel tube thickness (t) capable to increase the strength of column by143.59% at t = 10 mm as compared with t = 2 mm, whereas a slight effect had observed for the variation of stainless steel proof stress ( ). On the other hand, the higher values of concrete strength (fc′) obviously reduced the lateral expansion of CFSST column at initial load and led to increase the ultimate load capacity by 34.18 % at fc′ = 80 MPa as compared with  fc′ = 30 MPa. Furthermore, the design strengths calculated according to the Eurocode 4 for concrete filled steel tube (CFST) column appeared a good agreement with the numerical results within an average difference value 2.49%, hence, it could consider as the most rational design method to determine the ultimate strength of CFSST column.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study to investigate the influence of high temperatures on the bond properties between the recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) concrete and square steel tubes. A total of 27 pushout recycled aggregate concrete- (RAC-) filled square steel tube specimens are cast and heated under five different temperatures (20°C, 200°C, 400°C, 600°C, and 800°C) for testing. The main parameters considered in the test are temperature, exposure time of heating, RCA replacement ratio, interface length-to-width ratio, and concrete strength. The experimental results indicate that the bond strength for recycled coarse aggregate concrete and square steel tube increases with increasing temperatures.

The current paper aims to present the results of an experimental investigation into the compressive strength of pre-stressed steel tube-confined compressed concrete (PSTC) stub columns. Here, to prestress the confined concrete, an innovative technique is utilized, in which the fresh concrete is subjected to compression while the steel tube is simultaneously preten-sioned laterally by applying external pressure to the fresh concrete. A total of 135 confined specimens were tested under axial compressive loading to determine the confinement strength of the specimens. Moreover, new confinement relationships for the load-carrying capacity of the PSTC columns were proposed in terms of the prestressing ratio ( r P ), reference concrete strength ( c f), and tube outer diameter to wall thickness ratio ( / Dt ). Finally, a parametric study was conducted to evaluate the effect that the parameters r P, c f , and / Dt have on the compressive strength of the prestressed confined concrete. The results indi-cate that the confined concrete prestressed by the present technique demonstrates significantly enhanced load-carrying capacity; however, increasing the prestressing level slightly affects it.
