AbstractEvidence from studies in large field cages indicated that odor from virgin male apple maggot flies, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), was attractive to virgin females. Whether the principal role of this odor in mating behavior is in fact that of a female attractant or rather that of an aphrodisiac is uncertain and awaits further study.

The not-invented-here (NIH) syndrome describes a negatively-shaped attitude of employees towards externally generated knowledge. Despite being cited as one of the largest barriers in the transfer of external knowledge, empirical evidence on interventions to overcome NIH remains scarce. To address this research gap, we design a brief and specificrecategorisational-intervention on basis of the common in-group identity model in order to change employees’ attitudes towards external knowledge directly. Additionally, we take into account the effects of affirmations as a frequently mentioned countermeasure to NIH and also investigate the role of dual identities in recategorisation. To test our hypothesis, we conducted a large field experiment with a total of 1,097 employees within a multinational organisation. Results revealed that (I) organisational identification and status are positively related to higher levels of NIH, (II) a recategorisational-intervention completely removes the NIH bias and leads to a significant increase in the evaluation of external knowledge.

Recently, a decline in children’s fitness and lack of exercise has become a serious issue in Japan. Consequently, various governmental institutions have repeatedly taken up this problem and a number of policy recommendations have been made that aim to remedy the situation. Following these recommendations, the new Course of Study has proposed measures such as increasing the number of teaching hours for health and Physical Education (hereinafter abbreviated as “PE”) and reforming the PE curriculum within 12 years. By doing so, it has further emphasized the need “to develop the capacity and skills to engage in exercise throughout life, to realize an enriching sports life, and to improve physical fitness.” Despite these measures, the polarization between those children who actively engage in exercise and those who do not, as well as children who have an unfavorable or negative attitude toward exercise and PE lessons “Dislike for Exercise (hereinafter abbreviated as “DE”)” and “Dislike for Physical Education (hereinafter abbreviated as “DPE”)” still persist. The principal role of PE lessons at school is to introduce children to the joy and excitement of exercise. Within this context, emphasis should be placed on “PE” education that forms the basis of life-long engagement with sports. However, “DE” and “DPE” attitudes inhibit PE in school from achieving its goals.

We have previously observed that many of the renal and hemodynamic adaptations seen in normal pregnancy can be induced in virgin female rats by chronic systemic vasodilation. Fourteen-day vasodilation with sodium nitrite or nifedipine (NIF) produced plasma volume expansion (PVE), hemodilution, and increased renal medullary phosphodiesterase 5A (PDE5A) protein. The present study examined the role of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in this mechanism. Virgin females were treated for 14 days with NIF (10 mg·kg−1·day−1 via diet), NIF with spironolactone [SPR; mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) blocker, 200–300 mg·kg−1·day−1 via diet], NIF with losartan [LOS; angiotensin type 1 (AT1) receptor blocker, 20 mg·kg−1·day−1 via diet], enalapril (ENAL; angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, 62.5 mg/l via water), or vehicle (CON). Mean arterial pressure (MAP) was reduced 7.4 ± 0.5% with NIF, 6.33 ± 0.5% with NIF + SPR, 13.3 ± 0.9% with NIF + LOS, and 12.0 ± 0.4% with ENAL vs. baseline MAP. Compared with CON (3.6 ± 0.3%), plasma volume factored for body weight was increased by NIF (5.2 ± 0.4%) treatment but not by NIF + SPR (4.3 ± 0.3%), NIF + LOS (3.6 ± 0.1%), or ENAL (4.0 ± 0.3%). NIF increased PDE5A protein abundance in the renal inner medulla, and SPR did not prevent this increase (188 ± 16 and 204 ± 22% of CON, respectively). NIF increased the α-subunit of the epithelial sodium channel (α-ENaC) protein in renal outer (365 ± 44%) and inner (526 ± 83%) medulla, and SPR prevented these changes. There was no change in either PDE5A or α-ENaC abundance vs. CON in rats treated with NIF + LOS or ENAL. These data indicate that the PVE and renal medullary adaptations in response to chronic vasodilation result from RAAS signaling, with increases in PDE5A mediated through AT1 receptor and α-ENaC through the MR.

Decontrol of natural gas prices created more competition at the wellhead and the need for greater flexibility in the transportation rules to allow sales directly to end users and distribution without middlemen. In 1987, the Commission issued Order No. 500 which would end the disputes that had arisen by addressing three concerns: take-or-pay, contract demand adjustments, and ‘grand fathering’. The first and the most important was dealt with by a flexible crediting mechanism, the second eliminated and the third of insufficient importance to change the rules. Other issues about natural gas trade of concern to the Commission include: Marketing affiliates which threatened monopolistic practices that have required procedures to eliminate prohibitive practices and to deal with complaints: Rate design, which is the principal role of the Commissions that is treated on an individual basis; Certificate Proceedings for new construction that involve solving issues of rates and environmental impact.

In 1930 B. Schmidt invented the telescope that bears his name. Eleven years later, there were already two dozen Schmidt telescopes with primaries of 25 cm or more in diameter (Dimitroff and Baker 1945). An invention spreading so rapidly must have fulfilled a basic need – the need for a large field with good image quality over a substantial wavelength range. Here I shall briefly review the role of the large Schmidt telescopes in contemporary astronomy.

Nibbler (Nbr) is a 3′-to-5′ exoribonuclease whose catalytic 3′-end trimming activity impacts microRNA (miRNA) and PIWI-interacting RNA (piRNA) biogenesis. Here, we report on structural and functional studies to decipher the contributions of Nbr’s N-terminal domain (NTD) and exonucleolytic domain (EXO) in miRNA 3′-end trimming. We have solved the crystal structures of the NTD core and EXO domains of Nbr, both in the apo-state. The NTD-core domain ofAedes aegyptiNbr adopts a HEAT-like repeat scaffold with basic patches constituting an RNA-binding surface exhibiting a preference for binding double-strand RNA (dsRNA) over single-strand RNA (ssRNA). Structure-guided functional assays inDrosophilaS2 cells confirmed a principal role of the NTD in exonucleolytic miRNA trimming, which depends on basic surface patches. Gain-of-function experiments revealed a potential role of the NTD in recruiting Nbr to Argonaute-bound small RNA substrates. The EXO domain ofA. aegyptiandDrosophila melanogasterNbr adopt a mixed α/β-scaffold with a deep pocket lined by a DEDDy catalytic cleavage motif. We demonstrate that Nbr’s EXO domain exhibits Mn2+-dependent ssRNA-specific 3′-to-5′ exoribonuclease activity. Modeling of a 3′ terminal Uridine into the catalytic pocket of Nbr EXO indicates that 2′-O-methylation of the 3′-U would result in a steric clash with a tryptophan side chain, suggesting that 2′-O-methylation protects small RNAs from Nbr-mediated trimming. Overall, our data establish that Nbr requires its NTD as a substrate recruitment platform to execute exonucleolytic miRNA maturation, catalyzed by the ribonuclease EXO domain.
