The purpose of study was to resolve the effect of plyometric training and repeated sprint training on physical performance. The study was conducted on 41 subjects in two experimental groups (plyometric/repeated sprints training). Before and after the training program, subjects were subjected to diagnostic procedures that included standard test protocols. Results proved a statistically significant difference only after the plyometric training program compared to the repeated sprint group in countermovement jump (8.65% vs. 2.21%). In variable repeated jumps, an increased value was recorded (2.9% vs. 4.29%), like in sprint variables after the training program where certain trends of progress happened after the repeated sprint ability training and the specificity of the program (5 m = 0.89%, 10 m = 1.07% and 25 m = 1.35%), while plyometric training recorded unchanged values at 5 and 10 m, and a 0.27% improvement at 25 m. Stagnation of the 20-yard test was recorded in both groups. There was no difference between training programs in any variables of functional capacities, with similar measures recorded in repeated sprint ability. After six weeks of both training types, positive changes can be expected in explosive strength of lower extremities, increases in acceleration area, and maximum speed.

This pilot study aimed to determine the effects of differential learning in sprint running with and without changes of direction (COD) on physical performance parameters in female basketball players and to determine the feasibility of the training protocol. Nine female basketball players completed 4 weeks of repeated sprint training (RST) with (COD, n = 4) or without (NCOD, n = 5) changes of direction. A battery of sprints (0–10 and 0–25 m), vertical jumps (counter movement jump (CMJ), drop jump, and single-leg CMJs), and COD tests were conducted before and after intervention. NCOD completed two sets of ten sprints of 20 m, whereas COD performed 20 m sprints with a 180 degree turn at 10 m, returning to the starting line. Before each sprint, participants were instructed to provide different fluctuations (i.e., differential learning) in terms of varying the sprint. Both groups had 30 s of passive recovery between two sprints and 3 min between sets. A significant effect of time for the 0–10 m sprint, CMJ, and single leg-CMJ asymmetries were observed. Adding “erroneous” fluctuation during RST seems to be a suitable and feasible strategy for coaches to enhance physical performance in young female basketball players. However, further studies including larger samples and controlled designs are recommended to strengthen present findings.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The traditional hypoxic training program used by endurance athletes was included in the training of team and/or racquet sports players. Objective: The aim of this study is to analyse the effect of a new lower dose of repeated-sprint training in hypoxia (RSH) as compared with previous studies on short and long-term physical performance of team sports players. Methods: Tests were performed before and after four weeks of supervised specific training and after two weeks of detraining. Twenty-four team-sport players voluntarily participated in the study (age: 22.73±2.87 years; weight: 70.20±3.42 kg; height: 176.95±1.63 cm; BMI: 22.42±2.26 kg/m2); the participants were randomly assigned to the RSH training group (n=8; FiO2= 14.6%), to the normoxia group (RSN) (n=8; FiO2= 20.9%) or to a third control group (CON) (n=8). The participants performed eight training sessions of two sets of five 10-second repeated sprints, with a recovery period of 20 seconds between sprints and a recovery period of 10 minutes at 120 W between sets. Body composition was measured following standard anthropometric evaluation procedures. The Wingate Test, Repeated-Sprint Ability Test, SJ, CMJ and Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test were used to evaluate aerobic and anaerobic outcomes. Results: In the hypoxia group, maximal power increased by 14.96% and the total number of sprints performed increased by 20.36%, both with a large effect size (ES=0.78 and ES = 0.71, respectively). Conclusion: A lower dose of repeated-sprint training in hypoxia produces improvements in maximal power and number of sprints in the hypoxia group, in team sports players, as shown by the large effect size in both cases. El objetivo del estudio fue analizar el efecto de un entrenamiento con sprints lineales y con sprints que incluyen cambios de dirección (2-COD-90º), sobre el rendimiento de jugadores juveniles de fútbol que compiten en categoría provincial. Dieciséis jugadores (media ± SD: 16.7±.8 años de edad; 175.3±5.2 cm de altura; 64.4±9.4 kg de peso) fueron asignados de forma aleatoria a un grupo de entrenamiento con sprints repetidos lineales (n= 8, RSAL) ó con cambio de dirección (n=8, RSACOD). El RSAL realizaba 3 series de 10 sprints sobre 22-m, con 27-m de recuperación activa entre esfuerzos y 4-min de pausa entre series; el RSACOD realizaba 3 series de 10 sprints sobre 18-m con 2-COD-90º, con 18-m de recuperación activa y 4-min de pausa entre series. No se observaron cambios en el test RSA (8x30-m, recuperación 25-s) en ningún grupo. El entrenamiento RSAL mejoró (p <.05) el VO2max (50.99 ± 1.56 vs. 53.63 ± 2.86 ml/kg/min); mientras que el RSACOD mejoró (p <.05) en la capacidad para cambiar de dirección (13.62 ± .31 vs. 13.42 ± .32 s) y el triple salto horizontal con pierna dominante (5.87 ± .31 vs. 6.10 ± .61 m) y no dominante (5.72 ± .71vs. 6.01 ± .8 m). El entrenamiento debe contender esfuerzos lineales y con COD para obtener una mejora global en la condición física del futbolista.Abstract. The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of a linear repeated sprint training and repeated sprints including changes of direction (2-COD-90) on the performance of young soccer players competing in provincial category. Sixteen players (mean ± SD: 16.7 ± .8 years old; 175.3 ± 5.2 cm, 64.4 ± 9.4 kg) were randomly assigned to a linear repeated sprints training group (n = 8, RSAL) or change of direction group (n = 8, RSACOD). The RSAL performed 3 sets of 10 sprints over 22-m, with 27-m active recovery between workouts and 4-min rest between sets; the RSACOD performed 3 sets of 10 sprints over 18-m 2-COD-90º, with 18-m active recovery and 4-min rest between sets. No changes were observed in the RSA test (8x30-m, 25-s recovery) in either group. The RSAL training improved (p <.05) VO2max (50.99 ± 1.56 vs. 53.63 ± 2.86 ml / kg / min); while RSACOD improved (p <.05) in the ability to change direction (13.62 ± .31 vs. 13.42 ± .32 s) and horizontal triple jump with dominant leg (5.87 ± .31 vs. 6.10 ± .61 m) and nondominant (5.72 ± .71vs. 6.01 ± .8 m). The training must incorporate linear and COD efforts for an overall improvement in the physical condition of the player.

Context: Despite growing interest in quantifying and correcting vitamin D inadequacy in basketball players, a critical synthesis of these data is yet to be performed to overcome the low generalizability of findings from individual studies. Objective: To provide a comprehensive analysis of data in basketball pertaining to (1) the prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy; (2) the effects of vitamin D supplementation on 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration (and its association with body composition), bone health, and performance; and (3) crucial aspects that warrant further investigation. Data Sources: PubMed, MEDLINE, ERIC, Google Scholar, SCIndex, and ScienceDirect databases were searched. Study Selection: After screening, 15 studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Study Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Level of Evidence: Level 3. Data Extraction: The prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy, serum 25(OH)D, body composition, stress fractures, and physical performance were extracted. Results: The pooled prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy for 527 basketball players in 14 studies was 77% ( P < 0.001; 95% CI, 0.70-0.84). Supplementation with 4000 IU/d and 4000 IU/wk (absolute mean difference [AMD]: 25.39 nmol/L; P < 0.001; 95% CI, 13.44-37.33), as well as 10,000 IU/d (AMD: 100.01; P < 0.001; 95% CI, 70.39-129.63) vitamin D restored 25(OH)D to normal concentrations. Body composition data revealed inverse correlations between changes in serum 25(OH)D (from pre- to postsupplementation) and body fat ( r = −0.80; very large). Data concerning positive impacts of vitamin D supplementation on bone health and physical performance remain sparse. Conclusion: The high proportion of vitamin D inadequacy underscores the need to screen for serum 25(OH)D in basketball players. Although supplementation restored vitamin D sufficiency, the beneficial effects on bone health and physical performance remain sparse. Adiposity can modulate 25(OH)D response to supplementation.

Abstract Background Research indicates reduced physical performance from diagnosis into survivorship of pediatric cancer patients. However, there is no systematic information or guideline available on the methods to assess physical performance and function in this population. The purpose was to systematically compile and describe assessments of physical performance and function in patients and survivors of pediatric cancer, including cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, speed, balance, flexibility, functional mobility, gait and motor performance test batteries. Methods We searched the databases PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and Cochrane Database and performed abstract and full-text selection of 2619 articles according to the Cochrane Handbook of Systematic Reviews. Information on patients characteristics, assessments, information on validity and reliability, and relevant references was extracted. Results In summary, 63 different assessments were found in 149 studies including 11639 participants. Most studies evaluated cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength with the majority conducted off treatment. Some outcomes (e.g. speed) and diagnoses (e.g. neuroblastoma) were severely underrepresented. With the exception of gait, leukemia patients represented the largest group of individuals tested. Conclusions Insufficient data and patient heterogeneity complicate uniform recommendations for assessments. Our results support researchers and practitioners in selecting appropriate assessment to meet their specific research questions or individual daily practice needs. Impact This systematic review includes 149 studies and provides a comprehensive summary of 63 assessments to evaluate cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, speed, balance, flexibility, functional mobility, gait or motor performance test batteries in patients and survivors of pediatric cancer. We present the most studied fields within the pediatric cancer population, which are cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength, off treatment phase, and leukemia patients. We propose research priorities by identification of subgroups in terms of cancer type, phase of treatment, and outcome of interest that are underrepresented in studies currently available.

The aim of the study was to determine the effects of short-term (4 weeks, twice a week: 8 sessions) plyometric training on agility, jump, and repeated sprint performance in female soccer players. The study comprised 17 females performing this sports discipline. The players were randomly divided into two groups: with plyometric training (PLY) and the control (CON). All players followed the same training program, but the PLY group also performed plyometric exercises. Tests used to evaluate physical performance were carried out immediately before and after PLY. After implementing the short PLY training, significant improvement in jump performance (squat jump: p = 0.04, ES = 0.48, countermovement jump: p = 0.009, ES = 0.42) and agility (p = 0.003, ES = 0.7) was noted in the PLY group. In the CON group, no significant (p > 0.05) changes in physical performance were observed. In contrast, PLY did not improve repeated sprint performance (p > 0.05) among female soccer players. In our research, it was shown that PLY can also be effective when performed for only 4 weeks instead of the 6–12 weeks typically applied.
