Abstract Context: Recent research in the health care professions has shown that specific personal and environmental characteristics can predict burnout, which is a negative coping strategy related to stressful situations. Burnout has been shown to result in physiologic (eg, headaches, difficulty sleeping, poor appetite), psychological (eg, increased negative self-talk, depression, difficulty in interpersonal relationships), and behavioral (eg, diminished care, increased absenteeism, attrition) symptoms. Objective: To examine the relationship between selected personal and environmental characteristics and burnout among certified athletic trainers (ATs). Design: Cross-sectional survey. Setting: A demographic survey that was designed for this study and the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Human Services Survey. Patients or Other Participants: A total of 206 ATs employed at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) institutions as clinical ATs volunteered. Main Outcome Measure(s): We assessed personal and environmental characteristics of ATs with the demographic survey and measured burnout using the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Human Services Survey. Multiple regression analyses were performed to examine relationships between specific personal and environmental characteristics and each of the 3 subscales of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal accomplishment). Results: Most ATs we surveyed experienced low to average levels of burnout. Personal characteristics predicted 45.5% of the variance in emotional exhaustion (P < .001), 21.5% of the variance in depersonalization (P < .001), and 24.8% of the variance in personal accomplishment (P < .001). Environmental characteristics predicted 16.7% of the variance in emotional exhaustion (P  =  .005), 14.4% of the variance in depersonalization (P  =  .024), and 10.4% of the variance in personal accomplishment (P  =  .209). Stress level and coaches' pressure to medically clear athletes predicted ratings on all 3 subscales of burnout. Conclusions: Our findings were similar to those of other studies of burnout among NCAA Division I ATs, coaches, and coach-teachers. The results also support the Cognitive-Affective Model of Athletic Burnout proposed by Smith. Finally, these results indicate new areas of concentration for burnout research and professional practice.

The objectives of this study were to validate the Maslach Burnout Inventory – Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) for emergency medical technicians in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and to determine its construct equivalence and bias for different race groups. A cross-sectional survey design with an accidental sample (N = 318) was used. The MBIHSS and a biographical questionnaire were administered. Evidence of uniform bias was found for one item of the MBIHSS. Exploratory factor analyses resulted in a 3-factor model of burnout, consisting of Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalisation and Personal Accomplishment. The scales showed acceptable internal consistencies. Exploratory factor analysis with target rotations confirmed construct equivalence of scales for the White and Black groups. Opsomming Die doelstellings van hierdie studie was om die Maslach Uitbrandingsvraelys – Menslike Dienste-Opname (MBI-HSS) te valideer vir die Nood Mediese Tegnici in die Gauteng Provinsie van Suid-Afrika en om die konstrukekwivalensie en sydigheid daarvan vir die verskillende rassegroepe te bepaal. ’n Dwarssnee opname-ontwerp met ’n beskikbaarheidsteekproef (N = 318) is gebruik. ABSTRACTObjectiveThe scale of burnout in UK gastroenterology trainees and the feasibility to determine its prevalence using the validated Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) tool are unknown. A region-wide pilot study was conducted to determine the uptake of a 31-item questionnaire and estimate the prevalence of burnout in gastroenterology trainees within the East of England deanery (EoE). Symptom severity across the three domains of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and low personal accomplishment), and frequently experienced stressors by gastroenterology trainees were also studied.DesignThis was a cross-sectional study involving gastroenterology trainees from 16 hospitals across EoE using a 31-item questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of the 22-item MBI-HSS and 9 additional free-text questions. All gastroenterology trainees in EoE were invited to complete the anonymized survey online. Data were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively.ResultsUptake of the survey was above-average; 44.0% (40/91) response rate. 57.5% (23/40) of gastroenterology trainees suffered emotional exhaustion. 23.5% (8/34) had depersonalisation and 63.9% (23/36) experienced low professional accomplishment. Burnout prevalence was 35.3% (12/34). Only 48.4% (15/31) of gastroenterology trainees were aware of professional support services within EoE. Stressors related to service requirements and professional relationships were commonly reported; 65.6% and 25.0% respectively.ConclusionsIt is feasible to use a 31-item questionnaire to detect and study burnout in a national cohort of gastroenterology trainees. Burnout in EoE gastroenterology trainees was high and this may reflect the national prevalence within the specialty. Larger studies, greater awareness of burnout, and better access to professional support services are needed.Summary BoxWhat is already known about the subject?Burnout in physicians is a growing problem worldwide which can lead to personal ill-health and suboptimal patient care.Burnout in young gastroenterology fellows in the US are reported as high as 50% but the prevalence in UK gastroenterology trainees is unknown.The Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) is the most validated tool to determine physician burnout but survey length may affect uptake by UK gastroenterology trainees and the feasibility of future studies.What are the new findings?This pilot study demonstrated the feasibility of a 31-item questionnaire which included the MBI-HSS in studying burnout in UK gastroenterology trainees.Emotional exhaustion and a sense of low personal accomplishment affect more than half of gastroenterology trainees within the East of England.The prevalence of burnout in UK gastroenterology trainees is estimated to be high (35.3%) but larger studies are needed.Approximately half of gastroenterology trainees in the East of England were not aware of existing support services to help them cope with burnout.How might it impact on clinical practice in the foreseeable future?This pilot study may increase the awareness of burnout among UK trainees and trainers in gastroenterology.An estimate of burnout prevalence in UK gastroenterology trainees is provided so future research and remediation measures in the specialty can be justified.

Introduction: Researchers’ interest in occupational burnout results primarily from the dangerous and extensive consequences of this phenomenon. The aim of the study was to analyze the level of occupational burnout among nurses and doctors in operating theaters. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey study conducted on 325 nurses and doctors of seven hospitals in Poland. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS) by Michael Leiter and Christina Maslach. Results: The mean values for the level of occupational burnout for the entire sample according to the scale from the Maslach Burnout Inventory by C. Maslach amounted to 14.35 for emotional exhaustion, 8.56 for depersonalization, and 11.90 for personal accomplishment; when compared to reference levels, they classified emotional exhaustion at a low level, depersonalization at an average level, and personal accomplishment at a high level of burnout. Areas of work life are predictors of occupational burnout. The analysis showed a relationship between three of the six variables. As the workload increased, so did the level of burnout among participants, and the categories of honesty and values. Conclusions: The conducted research has shown that occupational burnout among nurses and doctors in operating theaters occurs in all dimensions of this phenomenon (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, job satisfaction). It was also shown that the areas of work life (workload, control, community, rewards, fairness, values) are predictors of occupational burnout among the respondents. This article shows how important the problem of burnout among operating theater medical staff is. Perhaps it will allow nurses and doctors to recognize this syndrome and encourage them make changes to their work to prevent burnout.

People in almost any occupation could develop burnout. The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between sense of coherence, coping and burnout in a corporate pharmacy group. A cross-sectional survey design was used. The study population consisted of 67 pharmacists. The Maslach Burnout Inventory, Orientation to Life Questionnaire and COPE were administered. The results showed that sense of coherence is significantly related to emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment. Regarding coping strategies, mental disengagement was positively related to emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, while positive reinterpretation and restraint coping were positively related to personal accomplishment. Sense of coherence and coping strategies explained 44 per cent, 35 per cent and 41 per cent of the variance in emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment respectively.

Objetivo: Analizar el nivel y la relación entre habilidades de comunicación, autoeficacia percibida y síndrome de Burnout en profesionales de la salud del servicio de urgencias hospitalario y unidad de cuidados críticos de un hospital comarcal. Método: Se plantea un estudio observacional y transversal en una muestra de 90 profesionales sanitarios de un Hospital Comarcal, 19 médicos (21,1%), 47 enfermeros (52,2%), 24 auxiliares de enfermería (26,7%). Se han usado la Escala sobre Habilidades de Comunicación en Profesionales de la Salud, el Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey y la escala de la Autoeficacia percibida.Resultados: Se obtiene una correlación negativa entre las diferentes dimensiones de la Escala sobre Habilidades de Comunicación en Profesionales de la Salud, la realización personal en el trabajo del Maslach Burnout Inventory y la autoeficacia percibida con las dimensiones agotamiento emocional y despersonalización del Maslach Burnout Inventory. Por otro lado, se observa una correlación positiva y estadísticamente significativa entre las dimensiones de las habilidades de comunicación con la dimensión realización personal en el trabajo del Maslach Burnout Inventory y la autoeficacia percibida.Conclusiones: Las habilidades de comunicación y la autoeficacia percibida de los profesionales sanitarios en los servicios de urgencias hospitalarios y las unidades de cuidados críticos están relacionadas con un menor agotamiento emocional y despersonalización, y una mayor realización personal en el trabajo. Aim: To analyze the level and relationship between communication skills, perceived self-efficacy and Burnout syndrome in health professionals from the hospital emergency department and the critical care unit of a regional hospital.Method: An observational and cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 90 health professionals from a Regional Hospital, 19 physicians (21.1%), 47 nurses (52.2%), 24 nursing aides (26.7%). The Communication Skills Scale for Health Professionals, the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey and the Scale of Perceived Self-Efficacy were utilized.Results: A negative correlation was obtained between the different dimensions of the Communication Skills Scale for Health Professionals, the personal accomplishment at work of the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the perceived self-efficacy with the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization dimensions of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. On the other hand, a positive and statistically significant correlation was observed between the dimensions of communication skills with the personal accomplishment dimension in the Maslach Burnout Inventory work and the perceived self-efficacy.Conclusions: The communication skills and the perceived self-efficacy of the health professionals in the emergency department and critical care unit are related to less emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and greater personal accomplishment at work.

Context The Smith Cognitive-Affective Model of Athletic Burnout suggests that athletic trainers (ATs) suffering from burnout may engage in substance use as a coping behavior. Increases in self-reported burnout symptoms are often associated with increases in heavy episodic drinking and tobacco use among various health care providers. However, this relationship has not been examined thoroughly. Objective To investigate the prevalence of substance use in ATs and identify relationships between symptoms of burnout and substance use among ATs. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Web-based survey. Patients or Other Participants A total of 783 certified ATs working full time in the collegiate or university setting were sampled for this study. Graduate assistant and other part-time ATs were excluded. The survey was distributed via the National Athletic Trainers' Association membership directory e-mail broadcast service. Main Outcome Measure(s) A 100-item online questionnaire consisting of items from previously used scales was used for this study. The survey included the Maslach Burnout Inventory and questions on substance use from the Monitoring the Future study. Multiple regression analyses were performed to analyze the survey data. All independent (Maslach Burnout Inventory subscales) and dependent (use of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana) variables were mapped to the Smith Cognitive-Affective Model of Athletic Burnout to determine which dimensions of burnout altered the odds of self-reported substance use. Results Almost half (46.3%) of participants admitted to at least 1 binge-drinking episode. However, the use of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, marijuana, and energy drinks during the previous month was less pronounced in the sample. Emotional exhaustion (B = 0.008, P = .023) and personal accomplishment (B = −0.016, P = .02) were significantly correlated with binge drinking. Emotional exhaustion (Exp[B] = 1.017, P < .001) was also significantly positively correlated with energy-drink consumption. Conclusions Some ATs engaged in heavy episodic drinking. Emotional exhaustion and a decreased sense of personal accomplishment were significantly correlated with this behavior.

This study explored the negative patterns of association between Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization with the dimensions of Engagement, while it was hypothesized a positive link with Personal Accomplishment. The sample was composed by 112 Spanish human services professionals who work with mentally retarded people. The analysis showed moderate negative correlations among scores on Emotional Exhaustion and on all three Engagement scales (–55 for Vigor; –.41 for Dedication; –.24 for Absorption), positive correlations among scores on Personal Accomplishment and Engagement dimensions (Vigor .57; Dedication .54; Absorption .50), and only significant correlations between scores on Depersonalization and Vigor (–.39) and on Dedication (–.22). The data obtained using the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Human Services Survey did not support the hypothesis of stronger negative correlations between the measures, Emotional Exhaustion–Vigor and Depersonalization–Dedication, hypothesized in the conceptual model developed by Schaufeli, Salanova, González-Romá, and Bakker.

BackgroundBurnout threatens intensive care unit (ICU) professionals’ capacity to provide high-quality care. Moral distress is previously considered a root cause of burnout, but there are other risk factors of burnout such as personality, work–life balance and culture. This study aimed to disentangle the associations of ICU professionals’ moral distress and other risk factors with the components of burnout—emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment—suggesting informed burnout prevention strategies.MethodsCross-sectional survey completed in 2019 of ICU professionals in two Dutch hospitals. The survey included validated measure for burnout (the Dutch Maslach Burnout Inventory), moral distress (Moral Distress Scale), personality (short Big Five Inventory), work–home balance (Survey Work–Home Interaction Nijmegen) and organisational culture (Culture of Care Barometer). Each of the three components of burnout was analysed as a separate outcome, and for each of the components, a separate regression analysis was carried out.Results251 ICU professionals responded to the survey (response rate: 53.3%). Burnout prevalence was 22.7%. Findings showed that moral distress was associated with emotional exhaustion (β=0.18, 95% CI 0.9 to 0.26) and depersonalisation (β=0.19, 95% CI 0.10 to 0.28) and with increased emotional exhaustion mediated by negative work-to-home spillover (β=0.09, 95% CI 0.04 to 0.13). Support from direct supervisors mitigates the association between moral distress and emotional exhaustion (β=0.16, 95% CI 0.04 to 0.27).ConclusionsUnderstanding moral distress as a root cause of burnout is too simplified. There is an important interplay between moral distress and work–home imbalance. Interventions that support individual coping with moral distress and a work–home imbalance, and the support of direct supervisors, are paramount to prevent burnout in physicians and nurses.

AbstractOne of the professions that has a high risk, stress and burnout rate is the police. To find out the extent of police officers against the impact of burnout, we need a valid and reliable measurement tool. This research seeks to test the construct validity of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human-Services Survey (MBI-HSS). The data used are data obtained from 504 police officers serving in the Metro Jaya Regional Police (Polda Metro Jaya); age between 21 and 56 years old (M = 33.04, SD = 8.533); male sex (99.8%) and female (0.2%); and length of work from 3–38 years (M = 15.04, SD = 8.533). The analytical method used is Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) using Mplus 7.11. The test results prove that the data fit with the 3-correlated factor model that shows the correlation of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization factors = 0.966, emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment = -0.590 and personal accomplishment and depersonalization =  -0.701, with RMSEA = 0.048, CFI = 0.943 and TLI = 0.934, indicating good fit.AbstrakSalah satu profesi yang memiliki resiko, stress dan tingkat burnout yang tinggi adalah polisi. Untuk mengetahui sejauh mana anggota polisi terhadap dampak burnout, dibutuhkan alat ukur yang valid dan reliabel. Oleh karena itu penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji validitas konstruk dari skala Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human-Services Survey (MBI-HSS). Data yang digunakan adalah data yang diperoleh dari 504 anggota polisi yang bertugas di Polda Metro Jaya; rentang usia 21 hingga 56 tahun (M = 33,04; SD = 8,533); jenis kelamin laki-laki (99,8%) dan wanita (0,2%); masa dinas mulai 3 hingga 38 tahun (M = 15,04; SD = 8,533). Metode analisis yang digunakan adalah Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) dengan menggunakan software Mplus version 7.11. Burnout in modern medicine is becoming more recognized and researched. The objective in this study is to evaluate burnout in a tertiary care academic institution and compare results among faculty, trainees, and advanced practice practitioners (APPs) in a cross-sectional survey using the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Fifty-two surveys were distributed; 44 participants completed the survey (85%): 25 staff physicians (57%), 14 resident physicians (32%), and 5 nurse practitioners (11%). Staff physicians had low emotional exhaustion, moderate depersonalization, and low result for reduced personal accomplishments; trainees reported low emotional exhaustion, high depersonalization, and moderate reduced personal accomplishment; and nurse practitioners reported moderate on all 3 dimensions. There is overall low burnout in this tertiary care academic center of otolaryngologist providers and no difference in rates among the different groups (trainees, APPs, staff). Measures addressing specific deficiencies among dimensions of burnout would be helpful to prevent disintegration of physician satisfaction into burnout.
