Background: Treatment of bovine mastitis (BM) is highly expensive necessitating better and affordable control strategies. Synergy of plant extracts against microbes associated with BM stand unexploited. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate the sensitivity of major bovine mastitis bacteria- Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli to combination of two traditional herbal plants, garlic and neem, widely used in East Africa.Methods: Maceration and soxhlet processes were used to obtain crude ethanolic extracts of neem extracts (NE) and garlic (GE) respectively. The extracts were used to determine Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) against test pathogens. Synergy was investigated by combining the two extracts at different concentrations and determining colony forming units per liquid medium (CFU/ml) using turbidity as a measure of inoculum growth.Results: NE was effective against S. aureus at 200µg/ml and 100µg/ml (average zone of inhibitions were 11±0.5774 mm and 10±0.5774 mm respectively). E. coli was resistant to NE. GE was effective against S. aureus at 200µl/ml and 100µl/ml (average zones of inhibition were 14±0.8819 mm and 12±0.8819 mm respectively). GE was effective against E. coli only at 200µl/ml with an average zone of inhibition of 11±0.5774 mm.Conclusions: There was synergy when garlic MIC was combined with NE MIC. Increase in concentration of GE above its MIC increased the rate of decrease of the CFU. No significant change was shown when NE concentration was increased above its MIC. The combination of NE and GE can have additive effect in treatment S. aureus mastitis while GE can supplement NE resistance.

Traditional medicine in Indonesia has been known by the public before formal health services using modern medicine. Indonesia has many type of herbal plants which have medicinal properties including dadap (Erythrina orientalis). This study aims to utilized dadap herbal liniment by modifying heating in Vigin Cocanut Oil. The study conducted in the laboratory of Agricultural Product Processing using a Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The first factor is the addition of 250 ml (M1), 375 ml (m2), and 400 ml (M3) Virgin Cocanut Oil treatment. The second factor is the heating tim of 5 minutes (L1), 10 minutes (L2), and 15 minutes (L3). Observation variable consisted of yield, Specific gravity, and organoleptic test of aroma and colored. The result showed an average yield of 87.70-91.88%. The highest yield was found in the treatment of adding 400 ml Virgin Cocanut Oil and 15 minutes of heating time. The highest type of weight was found in the treatment of addition of 325 ml Virgin Cocanut Oil and 5 minutes heating time. Based on the organoleptic scent test, the everage penalist gives a like answer. Organoleptic colors of reudeuep herbal products is according to SNI number 06-23-2006.

Pergularia daemia belongs to the family Asclepiadaceae, known to have anticancer, anti-inflammatory activity. Aim of the present study was to evaluate qualitative and quantitative phytochemical and antioxidant properties of ethanolic extracts of leaf, stem and root parts of P. daemia . Preliminary phytochemical analysis and in vitro antioxidant properties were evaluated by standard methods. The qualitative phytochemical analysis of P. daemia showed presence of flavonoids, tannins, alkaloid, phytosterol, carbohydrate, phenol, saponin, glycosides, terpenoids, steroids proteins and reducing sugars. Quantitative analysis showed polyphenol, flavonoid, flavonone, flavone and flavonol in P. daemia leaves, stem and root in considerable quantity. The in vitro antioxidant activity of P. daemia clearly demonstrated that leaf, stem and root parts have prominent antioxidant properties and was effective in scavenging free radicals.
