Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the pterygoid canal (PC) by Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), establishing its configuration and proximity with anatomical structures. Material and Methods: We evaluated 398 CBCT exams, all from a public University radiology clinic archive. Four parameters were evaluated: single or double PC, distance between PC and the inferior part of the sphenoid sinus (SS), ratio of PC and SS and the distance between the PC and the foramen rotundum. Results: It was observed that most of the PC of the sample presented simple morphology, the most frequent type of relationship between the PC and the SS on both sides was the close contact with the wall. Among the cases that there were some distances between the PC and the inferior wall of the SS, the mean of this distance did not exceed 3.20 mm, being the left side (3.03 mm) slightly closer than the right (3.20 mm). Finally, the distances between the PC and the corresponding Foramen Rotundum are presented with mean values of 5.87 mm for the right side and 6.31 mm for the left side. Conclusion: CBCT examination is of paramount importance for PC identification; once in the studied sample, the mean values found evidence the close relation between the PC and the SS.KeywordsCone beam computed tomography; Endonasal approach; Vidian canal.

The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) in oral masses of dogs. Nineteen dogs underwent clinical, MR and CT examinations. Eleven malignant and ten non-malignant masses were evaluated. Osteosarcoma was the most commonly found malignant oral mass and gingival hyperplasia was the most commonly found benign mass. The results showed that MRI provided more accurate information regarding the size of the masses and invasion of adjacent structures although MRI and CT show similar accuracy in assessment of bone invasion. Calcification and cortical bone erosion was better seen on CT images. Whereas contrast-MRI provided useful additional information, contrast-CT had no added benefit. In general, oral masses located in the caudal mandible, oropharynx and maxilla are better evaluated using MRI, once the histological type has been verified.

A 44-year-old male was referred to the Department of Orthodontics at Manchester Dental Hospital. He presented with pain from his heavily restored, lower right second premolar, which had an apical supplemental tooth, visible radiographically. The dentist queried whether the second premolar tooth could be extracted and the supplemental tooth aligned in its place. Clinical examination revealed no relevant abnormalities. The family and medical history were non-contributory. Panoramic tomography revealed multiple supplemental supernumerary teeth in the canine and premolar regions. Cone beam computed tomography and multidisciplinary team input were required to plan the treatment for this unusual case. CPD/Clinical Relevance: These findings highlight the management and treatment options for a case of non-syndromic, multiple supernumerary teeth. Consideration must be given to the risk of damage to adjacent structures if surgically removing supernumerary teeth, and the risk that supernumerary teeth may be ankylosed and not amenable to alignment within the arch.

Background There are neuro-ophthalmologic findings in patients with communicant hydrocephalus (CH). Purpose To investigate the relationships of the optic canal and carotid canal classifications at sphenoid sinus and anterior clinoid process (ACP) pneumatization in patients with CH. Material and Methods In this multicentric retrospective cross-sectional study, the cranial computed tomography (CT) images of 38 patients with CH (20 men, 18 women) and 40 controls (25 men, 15 women) were included. Optic and carotid canal classification at sphenoid sinus, ACP pneumatization, and sphenoid sinus septation were evaluated. Results In the CH group, type 3 optic canal was detected in 21.1% of the patients and type 4 optic canal was detected in 2.6% of the patients on the left side which was significantly different from the control group ( P<0.05). In the CH group, type 3 carotid canal was detected in 21.1% of the patients (left) and 18.4% of the patients (right). ACP pneumatization was present in 13.2% of the patients in the CH group bilaterally. There were positive correlations between optic canal classifications and ACP pneumatization ( P<0.05). There were also positive correlations between the right and left carotid canal classifications and ACP pneumatization ( P<0.05). Conclusion To avoid complications, CT should be evaluated carefully in patients with CH before surgical interventions in sphenoid sinuses and surgeons should work carefully in the sphenoid sinus or adjacent structures. The protrusion possibility of the optic canal or carotid canal to the sphenoid sinus may be higher in pneumatized ACP patients.

Abstract Background The use of cadavers for radiology research methodologies involving subjective image quality evaluation of anatomical criteria is well-documented. The purpose of this method comparison study was to evaluate the image quality of dental and adjacent structures in computed tomography (CT) and high-field (3 T) magnetic resonance (MR) images in cadaveric heads, based on an objective four-point rating scale. Whilst CT is a well-established technique, MR imaging (MRI) is rarely used for equine dental diagnostics. The use of a grading system in this study allowed an objective assessment of CT and MRI advantages in portraying equine cheek teeth. As imaging is commonly performed with cadaveric or frozen and thawed heads for dental research investigations, the second objective was to quantify the impact of the specimens’ conditions (in vivo, post-mortem, frozen-thawed) on the image quality in CT and MRI. Results The CT and MR images of nine horses, focused on the maxillary premolar 08s and molar 09s, were acquired post-mortem (Group A). Three observers scored the dental and adjacent tissues. Results showed that MR sequences gave an excellent depiction of endo- and periodontal structures, whereas CT produced high-quality images of the hard tooth and bony tissues. Additional CT and MRI was performed in vivo (Group B) and frozen-thawed (Group C) in three of these nine horses to specify the condition of the best specimens for further research. Assessing the impact of the specimens’ conditions on image quality, specific soft tissues of the maxillary 08s and 09s including adjacent structures (pulps, mucosa of the maxillary sinuses, periodontal ligament, soft tissue inside the infraorbital canal) were graded in group B and C and analysed for significant differences within CT and MR modalities in comparison to group A. Results showed that MRI scores in vivo were superior to the post-mortem and frozen-thawed condition. Conclusions On comparing the imaging performance of CT and MRI, both techniques show a huge potential for application in equine dentistry. Further studies are needed to assess the clinical suitability of MRI. For further research investigations it must be considered, that the best MR image quality is provided in live horses.

Abstract Transcatheter tricuspid valve therapies are an emerging field in structural heart interventions due to the rising number of patients with severe tricuspid regurgitation and the high risk for surgical treatment. Computed tomography (CT) allows exact measurements of the annular plane, evaluation of adjacent structures, assessment of the access route, and can also be used to identify optimal fluoroscopic projection planes to enhance periprocedural imaging. This review provides an overview of current transcatheter tricuspid valve repair and replacement therapies and to what extent CT can support these interventions.

Objectives Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma is reportedly a rare but emerging type of lymphoma in adolescents. The present study was performed to specify its imaging characteristics. Methods Our hospital’s picture archiving and communication systems were searched from January 2009 to December 2016. We identified 13 patients aged <18 years with pathologically confirmed extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma in the head and neck region. The computed tomography and magnetic resonance images were reviewed to summarize the imaging characteristics of extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma in adolescents. Results The mean age at onset was 15.2 ± 1.46 years (range, 12–17 years) with a male:female ratio of 1.17:1.00. Most of the patients (n = 10) displayed nasal cavity and/or paranasal involvement. The tumor was homogeneous in both computed tomography and magnetic resonance images and showed slight enhancement. No calcification or liquefactive necrosis was observed. Adjacent structures were usually involved. Conclusion Suggestive imaging characteristics could acquaint specialists with extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma in adolescents, facilitating improved early recognition of the diagnosis and helping to improve the patient’s outcome.

Background. Finding the right diagnoses in patients with complex foot and ankle disorders can be challenging. Single-photon emission computed tomography and computed tomography (SPECT-CT) has shown to be feasible in foot and ankle surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and accuracy of SPECT-CT and thereby its impact on final treatment decision compared with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods. A retrospective study was performed on 49 patients treated at our institution. Experienced foot and ankle surgeons independently, and blinded, analyzed clinical data and radiographs together with MRI, SPECT-CT, or a combination of both. Based on the determined final treatment decision Cohen’s kappa values were calculated to illustrate interrater and intrarater reliability. Results. The kappa values for interrater reliability were higher for SPECT-CT at .68 and MRI + SPECT-CT at .71 compared to 0.38 for MRI alone (P < .05). The kappa values for intrarater reliability of MRI + SPECT-CT were higher at .75 compared with SPECT-CT alone at .67 (P < .05) and MRI at .35 (P < .01). Conclusion. We found a higher interrater and intrarater reliability for SPECT-CT compared with MRI alone for diagnosing complex foot and ankle pathologies. SPECT-CT has a high impact on final treatment decision. The main indications are bony pathologies with diagnostic uncertainty especially in closely adjacent structures as the joints of the midfoot, occult coalitio, stress fractures, verification or exclusion of nonfusion, periprosthetic disorders after total ankle replacement and osteochondral lesion in cases of combined pathologies. AbstractObjective:To determine the feasibility and safety of transtympanic balloon dilatation of the eustachian tube.Methods:Transtympanic eustachian tube dilatation was performed on six cadaver heads using balloon catheters. Catheters were placed in each eustachian tube and the head scanned by computed tomography. Randomised, blinded dilatation of one balloon in each head was performed, followed again by a second computed tomography scan. The scans were reviewed by a neurotologist and neuroradiologist who were blinded to previous treatment, and measurable dilatation and incidental damage noted.Results:There was adequate placement of the balloon catheter beyond the bony isthmus in 6 of 10 eustachian tubes. There was one insufficient catheter placement and three adverse placements (one into the petrous carotid canal and two into the vidian canal). Only one dilated tube showed a measurable increase in diameter.Conclusion:This experiment revealed serious safety issues with transtympanic eustachian tube dilatation. Therefore, this approach should not be considered feasible at this time.
