Pratt timothy (Phleum pratense L.) is an 11-clone synthetic cultivar developed through progeny testing for general combining ability at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Crops and Livestock Research Centre, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Pratt timothy was selected for winter hardiness, plant vigour, plant height, and intermediate maturity (similar to the check cultivar Climax but later than Champ). In Atlantic Canada, Pratt timothy produced more forage than Champ during 3 production years. This cultivar was superior in persistence and re-growth potential with greater production of second-cut herbage.

У системі діалельних схрещувань п’яти сортів яч-меню ярого (Донецький 12, Донецький 14, Донецький 15,Прерія, Галактик) установлено особливості генети-чного контролю мінливості ознак: висота рослин,кількість зерен у колосі, маса 1000 зерен у відповід-ності зі співвідношенням варіанс специфічної комбі-наційної здатності (СКЗ) і загальної комбінаційноїздатності (ЗКЗ). Виділено й запропоновано сорти якджерела ознак висота рослин Галактик і Донецький14; кількість зерен у колосі – сорт Прерія; маса 1000зерен – сорт Донецький 15. Виділені зразки з високимі стабільним рівнем комбінаційної здатності запро-поновано використовувати в селекційній роботі. Phleum pratense (L.) is the important forage grass species in Serbia. The study was conducted on 20 autochthonous population of Phleum pratense (L.), originating from Western Serbia. Plant height, protein content and crude cellulose content had a high direct impact on yield. Populations of PP16, PP20, PP2 and PP9 had the significantly higher yield of the raw matter compared to all the tested population and the highest values for the other evaluated parameters, also. The average yield of crude biomass was positive statistically highly significantly correlated with plant height (r=0.87**), and positively significantly correlated with a content of crude proteins and positive non significant correlated with crude cellulose (r=0.42 ns). Based on obtained values and by the appropriate choice of selection methods, we conclude that we have excellent genotypes, PP16, PP20, PP2 and PP9 for a successful selection process in order to obtain new high yielding varieties of Phleum pratense.

Tapani is a 21-clone diploid synthetic cultivar of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.). It was developed by phenotypic selection at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Crops and Livestock Research Centre, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and at the Soils and Crops Research and Development Centre in Quebec City, Quebec. The original material for this strain was selected from collections made in old stands of red clover in three Atlantic Provinces of Canada. Tapani is early flowering and winterhardy. In Atlantic Canada, Tapani yielded an average of 109% of the check cultivar Marino over three production years. This cultivar has superior re-growth potential with high second-cut herbage yield. Combining ability effects were estimated for grain yield and some other important agronomic traits of maize in a 7×7 diallel analysis excluding reciprocals. The variances for general combining ability (GCA) were found significant for yield, days to pollen shedding, days to silking and ear height while it was found non-significant for plant height and number of kernels/ear. Non-significant general combining ability (GCA) variance for plant height and number of kernels/ear indicates that these two traits were predominantly controlled by non- additive type of gene action. Specific combining ability (SCA) was significant for all the characters except yield and days to silking. Non-significant specific combining ability (SCA) variance for yield and days to silking suggests that these two traits were predominantly controlled by additive type of gene action. Both GCA and SCA variances were found significant only in days to pollen shedding and ear height indicated the presence of additive as well as non additive gene effects for controlling the traits. However, relative magnitude of these variances indicated that additive gene effects were more prominent for all the characters studied except days to silking. Parent BIL95 was the best general combiner for both high yield and number of kernels/ear and parent BML4 for dwarf plant type. Two crosses (BML4× BML36 and BIL114× BIL31) exhibited significant and positive SCA effects for grain yield involved low × average and average × average general combining parents. The range of heterosis expressed by different crosses for grain yield and days to silking was from -65.83 to 21.26 percent and -17.85 to 8.22 percent, respectively.. The better performing three crosses (BIL114×BIL31, BIL138×BIL95 and BIL31×BIL95) can be utilized for developing high yielding hybrid varieties as well as for exploiting hybrid vigour.Bangladesh J. Timothy (Phleum pratense L.) samples from 107 sites throughout Prince Edward Island were obtained at the early heading stage and analyzed for Ca, P, K, Mg, Cu, Mo, S, Mn, Zn and Fe. The mean tissue contents of these minerals were: Ca, 0.25%; P, 0.24%; K, 2.12%; Mg, 0.10%; Cu, 4.5 ppm; Mo, 0.37 ppm; S, 0.12%; Mn, 31.1 ppm; Zn, 26.8 ppm and Fe, 30.5 ppm. When compared with the requirements of cattle and sheep Ca would be deficient for most age and production categories and the mean timothy Ca content was lower than published values. The Ca: P ratio was low at approximately 1:1. Mean Mg content of timothy was low relative to animals' requirements, which, combined with the low Ca and high K content of a number of samples, indicated there was a risk of grass tetany in grazing animals. Most trace elements were barely adequate or deficient relative to the needs of cattle and sheep. Copper, for example, at 4.5 ppm is deficient for cattle but lack of deficiency problems was attributed to correspondingly low Mo and S levels. The need for adequate Ca and P supplementation and the use of a suitable trace-mineralized salt is recommended in formulating diets for dairy cattle, beef cattle, and sheep. Crosses were made between three varieties and seven accessions of white jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) in all possible combinations to establish 10 × 10 full diallel set. Variances for general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were significant or highly significant for all the characters indicating additive and non-additive gene actions played predominant role for expression of these characters. The magnitudes of GCA variance were higher than the corresponding SCA variance confirmed the predominance of additive genetic variations for these traits. The variety CVL-1 and Acc. 1831 were good general combiners for plant height, technical height, base diameter, number of nodes, bark weight, fibre weight and stick weight. Crosses, var. CVL-1 × Acc. 1831, Accs. 3695 × 4087, Accs. 1831 × 1833, Accs.1831 × var.CC-45, Acc. 2146 × var. A-38 and Acc. 2146 × var.CC-45 revealed significant positive SCA effect for fibre weight. Significant reciprocal SCA effect was observed in crosses, Accs.1832 × 3695, Accs.1833 × 1831 and Acc. 4087 × var.CVL-1. Crosses, var. CVL-1 × Acc.1831, Accs. 3695 × 4087, Acc.1831 × var.CC-45, Acc.2146 × var.CC-45 and a reciprocal cross, Accs.1833 × 1831 were found to be good specific combiners for bark weight, fibre weight and stick weight. Combining ability and interrelationships among four characters were studied in six gooseberry (Ribes grossularia) progenies produced by crossing each of two thornless to three large-fruited cultivars. Measurements were recorded for four consecutive years for fruit yield and 100-berry weight, and for one year for thorniness and plant height. General and specific combining abilities were significant and their interactions with years were not significant for fruit yield and berry weight, and general combining ability was significant for thorniness. Genotypic correlations agreed closely with the phenotypic correlations. Significant positive correlations were obtained between fruit yield with berry weight and plant height. The nonsignificant correlations between thorniness with fruit yield, berry weight and plant height suggest no genetic barrier to combining thornlessness with these traits.

Line x tester analysis using a set of four females, ten males and their forty hybrids was carried out to esti-mate the general combining ability of parents and specific combining ability of hybrids for yield and ten other associ-ated components in rice (Oryza sativa L.) in a Randomized Block Design during Kharif 2011. GCA variances for females (s2f) were significant at 0.1% level of significance for plant height (40.8), no. of grains per panicle (505.9), grain yield per plant (29.1), test weight(17.9), straw yield per plant (61.3) and kernel L/B ratio (0.2) whereas specific combining ability (SCA) variances for f x m interactions were highly significant for all the characters. Non-additive gene action was prevalent in all characters (Range: 0.03 in amylose content to 0.88 in kernel length breadth ratio) except plant height (1.33) as evident by low GCA to SCA ratio. None of the parents were good general combiner for all traits, however, female IR-28 and male AMT-119 and PNR-546 were good general combiners for a maximum number of traits i.e. five traits out of eleven.. The general combining ability for grain yield per plant for female parent Gurjari (6.19) and NVSR-178 (5.29); and male parents AMT 119 (2.73) and PNR 546 (2.44) makes them a good choice for improving yields in a hybridization programme as these female and male parents are also having signifi-cant GCA effects for maximum number of yield associated traits i.e. four and five traits out of eleven for female and male parents respectively. A vis-à-vis comparison of top three specific combining ability crosses with their mean performance showed correlation and these crosses were having at least one good general combining ability parent.

The purpose of this study was to estimate combining ability of 58 sorghum lines previously selected for Aluminum (Al) tolerance. One hundred sixty-five hybrids were evaluated at three levels of Al saturation (0%, 20% and 50%) at the same season. General Combining Ability (GCA) effects were significant for female lines for all three traits. GCA effects for male lines were significant only for plant height. Specific Combining Ability (SCA) effects were significant only for flowering time. The ratio GCA to SCA was greater than the unity, indicating the prevalence of additive effects for the control of Al tolerance. F7, F14, F17, F20, F21, F24, F29, F31, F41, F42, F48, F51, F54 and F55 lines contributed to increase yield, while F29, F48 and F51 also contributed to reduce flowering time. M2 was the best male line since it contributed to increase yield and plant height, and to reduce flowering time.

Seven clones of smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.), five of which were resistant to diseases caused by Pyrenophora bromi (Dred.) and Selenophoma bromigena (Sacc.), were crossed in all combinations forming a 7 × 7 diallel. Plants of both the F1 and its reciprocal cross, as well as the parents, were grown in the field at Edmonton and were measured for dry matter production, plant diameter, days to head emergence and plant height during their 2nd yr. Highly significant variation due to general and specific combining ability were recorded for all the traits. Four of the disease-resistant clones were low yielding and small in plant diameter. On the basis of general combining ability effects these same clones showed little promise as parents. However, one of the disease-resistant clones, B42, was found to perform relatively well and should be of value as a breeding stock.
