This study compared the relationship between visual density ratings and various turfgrass growth components using the combined data of 10 creeping bentgrass clones exposed to or not exposed to simulated foot-type wear-stress. Measurements were determined on 28 June, 12 July, and 2 Aug. 1985. There was a trend towards a reduction, rarely significant, in all turfgrass growth components measured due to simulated wear. Significant reductions in the visual density ratings occurred for the 12 July and 2 Aug. rating dates. There was no difference in the relationship between visual density ratings and the turfgrass growth components due to applied wear-stress. Visual density ratings were correlated to tiller number and leaf number and inversely to dry weight/tiller. Tiller number and leaf number are linearly related. Key words: Agrostis stolonifera, creeping bentgrass, visual density rating, tiller number, leaf number, simulated wear

The objective of this study was to determine if total plant leaf numbers in a large data set could be predicted from individual plant shoot dry weight measurements using regression equations derived from a subset of the data. The species used were annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) and creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds. ’Penncross’). There was significant correlation between leaf number and shoot dry weight measurements in data subsets. Leaf numbers for the total data set were estimated by the regression equation derived from a subset consisting of pooled data from one, two or three replicates. This procedure was assessed by comparing predictions from regression equations with actual values, using a number of different sets of replicates to generate the regression equation. On the basis of the results we suggest that, for annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass in greenhouse pot culture, this procedure can be used to accurately estimate leaf number data for remaining replicates within an experimental design, once regression coefficients are established from pooled data from two replicates.Key words: Leaf number estimation, shoot dry weight, annual bluegrass, creeping bentgrass

Cuttings of Trifolium repens were grown in pots without neighbours. When individual interconnected stolons from these cuttings were directed into adjacent pots so that daughter ramets were growing with different grass neighbours, these neighbouring grasses had dissimilar effects on leaf number, leaf size, percent branching of nodes, stolon length, and shoot dry weight. When the T. repens cuttings were grown in pots with neighbours, the effects of different grass neighbours on subsequent growth of stolons and ramets evened out. Key words: integration, clone, ramet, neighbour effects, Trifolium repens.

Relations between plant dry weight and tiller number have been examined in Lolium rigidum and Lolium perenne grown in the field at low density, and in controlled environments. Between plants within a cultivar, dry weight of tops and tiller number were positively related at all developmental stages throughout the growing season. Between four cultivars of L. perenne and L. rigidum, the relationship was positive in the vegetative stage but became negative when plants were reproductive. It is shown that an allometric relation exists between plant dry weight and tiller number during the vegetative stage. This relation did not differ markedly between cultivars, and for L. rigidum and for L. perenne cv. S.24 was not altered when plants were grown in different seasons or in controlled environments.

Recovery of rates of leaf emergence, leaf extension, tiller number, leaf number, leaf area and shoot dry weight per plant following water deficits lasting for between 10 and 28 days was measured in Bromus catharticus in a controlled environment. The rate of leaf extension recovered to the rate of control plants within 4-6 days of rewatering and then exceeded the control rate for up to 28 days. During this time, four or five new leaves emerged. The maximum rate of leaf extension for individual leaves during recovery was up to 20% higher than rates typical for leaves of the same insertion on well watered control plants. During an initial recovery phase which followed the 28-day water deficit, and which lasted 20 days from rewatering, the rates of increase in tiller number, leaf number, and leaf area per plant were greater than control rates by 38, 48 and 51%, respectively. Rates for these components of yield then normalized. Relatively small differences among treatments were measured for rate of shoot dry matter accumulation. Final shoot dry weight was approximately proportional to the number of 'non- drought' days, which were defined as those days on which the leaves showed no sign of wilting. This also corresponded to day-time leaf water potentials higher (less negative) than - 1400 kPa.

Palabras clave: educación, valores, fuente de valores, integración, cultura EDUCATION AND VALUES ABSTRACT The article offers a reflection on education and values. After a reference to the different senses in which one can pose the problem in terms of how you can understand the relationship between the two nouns “education” and “values”, reflection focuses on some problems related to the values in the contents of education. First, it concerns the problem of the criterion against which to determine the values of education, concluding that the criterion could be neither a priori in nature, not empirical, but “synthetic”. Herein, the problem of principle is faced, the source of values, or the realization of the criterion of the values of education, understanding that these should be determined from the subject of education. It concludes with the reference of a requirement of the values in education, setting up a unitary and interactive whole. Key Words: education, values , power values , integration, culture

Objectives: To study the relationship between serum estradiol and physical disorders after hysterectomy. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study on 151 women after total hysterectomy from 12/2008 to 11/2010 at Hue Cental Hospial. Results: Serious disorders in total hysterectomy group include: physical disorders (34.78%), maternal disorders (71.74%), sexual disorders (58.70%). There were significant differences these disorders between total hysterectomy group and hysterectomy with/without accessiory remove group, as well as menopause group. Conclusion: Serum estradiol levels was inversely correlated with physical disorders, martenal disorders, sexual disorders and other disorders. Key words: hysterectomy, serum estradiol

Cold tolerance of the springtail Gomphiocephalus hodgsoni Carpenter (Collembola: Hypogastruridae) was studied at Cape Bird, Ross Island, Antarctica (77°13′S, 166°26′E). Microclimate temperatures indicate a highly seasonal thermal environment, with winter minima <–39°C. Snow cover significantly buffers both minimum temperatures and cooling rates. Gomphiocephalus hodgsoni survives low temperatures by avoiding freezing. Mean low group supercooling points (SCPs) ranged from –35.4°C in October to –28.3°C in January. The lowest SCP measured was –38.0°C. The high SCP group was very small, making up only 18% of the population in January. In October, G. hodgsoni had a very high glycerol content (>80 μg mg−1 dry weight), although this declined rapidly to low levels (c. 7–10 μg mg−1 dry weight) in January. Quantities of glucose and trehalose were low during October, but steadily increased throughout the summer. Haemolymph osmolality was exceptionally high (up to 1755 mOsm kg−1) at the end of November, but this rapidly declined to c. 500 mOsm kg−1 by late December. The presence of thermal hystersis proteins was indicated by both osmometry on haemolymph samples and recrystallization inhibition studies of springtail homogenates. There was a strong relationship between glycerol content and SCP, but the relationship between haemolymph osmolality, SCP and carbohydrates is uncertain.
