The Problem Persons with disabilities (PWD) are regarded as “the Other” and are sequestered from “normative” society because of their “Otherness.” “Othering” results in discrimination and the systemic preclusion of PWD. Ableism is the belief that being without a disability, impairment, or chronic illness is the norm. The notion that people without disabilities are the norm and are inherently superior is accepted without critique by those that advocate for authentic leadership. This privileges ableism and furthers the “Othering” of PWD within a leadership style intended to promote self-awareness, beliefs and ethics, and interpersonal relationships. The Solution The disabled experience and differently abled voice must be restored through relationally “being” with others and authentic dialogue. What is needed is a shift from the deficit model of authentic leadership to a social paradigm of authentic leadership, welcoming of bodily and psychic difference. This will better enable both leaders and employees to craft an authentic profile in the workplace. The Stakeholders Leaders and those who seek to become leaders following an authentic leadership approach can benefit from a better understanding of how their ingrained belief systems impact those that they lead who are both “able-bodied” and “disabled.” Human resource development (HRD) practitioners and leadership development practitioners can use this information to deconstruct and reconstruct leadership development opportunities to be inclusive as an authentic leader.

PurposeThis paper aims to report the findings of a study examining the relationship between different leadership styles and engagement through the mediating role of proactive personality.Design/methodology/approachServant leadership, paradoxical leadership, authentic leadership, employee engagement and proactive personality were assessed in an empirical study based on a sample of 348 military personnel in Spain. The questionnaire data were analyzed through SEM using EQS and bootstrapping analysis using the PROCESS macro for SPSS.FindingsThe results reveal that servant leadership style in officers partially impacts their cadets' engagement through proactive personality but that authentic and paradoxical leadership styles do not mediate the relationship. The authors also verify a direct relationship between proactive personality and engagement.Practical implicationsThe study implications advance the literature on leadership in emphasizing new leadership styles to increase proactive personality and engagement in the military context. This study verifies the importance of military leaders fostering servant leadership as an antecedent of proactive personality. Finally, the authors show that servant leadership partially impacts engagement through proactive personality.Originality/valueThis study explores the relationship among servant, paradoxical and authentic leadership styles, proactive personality, and engagement – relationships that have not been explored theoretically and tested empirically in the military context.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the relationship between a positive leadership style [i.e. authentic leadership (AL)] and nurses’ psychological health (i.e. nurses’ flourishing and satisfaction with work–family balance), including psychological capital (PsyCap) as a mediational variable. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional study was conducted with a self-report questionnaire including 1,076 nurses from public and private hospitals in France. Findings Structural equation modeling results revealed that AL is related to nurses’ flourishing and satisfaction with work–family balance and that PsyCap acted as a partial mediator between this leadership style and positive outcomes. Practical implications This research indicated that hospitals can enhance nurses’ psychological health not only in their work but also in their lives in general by improving leaders’ authentic management style and developing PsyCap (e.g. staffing, training and development). Originality/value An original feature of this paper concerns its focus on the mediating role of PsyCap in the relationship between AL and these positive outcomes. Moreover, this study underlined the influence of leadership style on nurses’ psychological health beyond occupational health. The research makes a valuable contribution to the existing AL literature by establishing a new explanatory model of AL and nurses’ psychological health in the French context. It also highlights the interest in developing this leadership style in health-care settings.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between authentic leadership and contextual performance of nursing staff while considering the mediating effect of psychological capital and moderating effect of autonomy on this association. Design/methodology/approach Data were gathered from 41 small and medium-sized hospitals situated in the state of Uttarakhand, India. The sample for the study included 530 nurses and their 146 supervisors. Process macro (Hayes) was used to examine the influence of authentic leadership on contextual performance and the mediating effect of psychological capital and moderating role of autonomy in the relationship between authentic leadership and contextual performance. Findings Results indicate that authentic leadership is positively linked to contextual performance of nurses. Furthermore, psychological capital is found to mediate the relationship between authentic leadership and contextual performance while autonomy acts as a moderator between psychological capital and contextual performance. Practical implications Findings of this investigation would help healthcare managers to understand the importance of developing the psychological capital of healthcare workers. The paper draws attention of hospital administrators toward the need for setting up an appropriate environment wherein nurses are given a certain degree of autonomy to perform their task more effectively. This study also highlights the importance of an effective leadership style, namely authentic leadership in influencing contextual performance in service-oriented organizations such as healthcare institutions, as investigated in this study. Originality/value While extensive literature is available on authentic leadership and its impact on followers’ behavior, very little work seems to have been done to show a linkage between authentic leadership and contextual performance, especially in the context of nurses in developing country such as India. This work, therefore, may be considered original and of significant value in understanding the relationships between the various constructs in the Indian scenario.

Managing good employees in the current competitive business environment is one of the difficulties an organization is facing in order to accomplish their objectives. Having in mind that employees’ feelings, spirit regarding the job, commitment and engagement are among the biggest factors that should never be overlooked by the organization. All of these factors as well as their reactions to various aspects of the job and organization will seriously affect employees’ performance, involvement and engagement. Organizational leadership is one of the vital factors in all organizations as well as one of the key strategies to accomplish this purpose. This research inspects and tests the influence of authentic leadership style on employees’ satisfaction with their jobs in insurance companies from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Many industries and organizations, in particular the insurance industry, can benefit by this research with different advantages: learn about the enhancement and advantages of authentic leadership, suggestions for workers fulfillment and how authentic leadership can impact employees’ motivation and engagement. Regression analysis was conducted to test the hypothesis. Results indicate that authentic leadership style has significant effect on employees’ job satisfaction.

Abstract Background Though leadership has been highlighted as a salient skill for medical teachers in the medical education literature, the role of authentic leadership style among medical teachers in activating medical students’ learning behaviors has not been explored. Our study seeks to examine the effects of medical teachers’ authentic leadership on study task crafting behaviors among medical students. Methods Our study adopted a mixed-methods research design comprising observations of 100 surgical operations and 100 ward conferences led by medical teachers, and surveys on authentic leadership, study task crafting, and promotion focus. Structural equation modelling was utilized in the data analysis. Results Medical teachers’ authentic leadership demonstrated positive effects on the two study task crafting behaviors (seeking resources (B = 0.36, p < 0.001) and seeking challenges (B = 0.21, p < 0.05)) but not on reducing study task demands (B = 0.11, p > 0.10). Promotion focus was found to strengthen such positive effects of authentic leadership on seeking resources (B = 0.23, p < 0.05) and seeking challenges (B = 0.18, p < 0.05). Illustrative excerpts of intraoperative and conference conversations are presented. Conclusions Our study provided empirical evidence that medical students guided by authentic teachers expressed increased levels of study task crafting, which were further increased if medical students were promotion-focused.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore whether authentic leadership in hospitality is composed of four distinctive but related substantive components (i.e. self-awareness, relational transparency, balanced processing, and internalized moral), the impact of authentic leadership on employees’ organizational commitment (OC), the impact of employees’ OC on their turnover intention (TI), and the indirect effect of authentic leadership on employees’ TI via OC. Design/methodology/approach The authors tested a sample of 236 students working as employees in hospitality in the USA, with the idea that authentic leadership increases OC which in turn decreases TI. The participants were asked to rate the manager’s leadership style and the frequency of their leadership behavior. Findings Results provide support for the positive effect of authentic leadership on OC in the hospitality industry, and suggest that OC mediates reduced TI. Originality/value The results of the study suggest a variety of significant theoretical contributions and critical leadership and organizational implications. The effects of authentic leadership were empirically tested on employees’ OC and the effects of that OC on TI.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships between sales managers’ authentic leadership style and salespeople’s positive development. Design/methodology/approach Multilevel regression analysis was used to examine the data from 40 work teams from several Spanish retail companies (190 salespeople and 40 sales managers). Findings In line with previous studies, the analyses indicated that sales managers’ authentic leadership style as perceived by employees significantly predicted salespeople’s work engagement and psychological capital (PsyCap). Contrary to the expectations, salespeople’s perceptions of sales managers’ authentic leadership did not relate to sales managers’ self-ratings of authentic leadership, but instead related to sales managers’ gender (women were perceived as more authentic) and higher perceived frequency of leader–follower interaction. Originality/value The study contributes to the literature by testing if sales managers’ variables (gender and self-ratings of authentic leadership and perceived frequency of leader–follower interaction) predict salespeople’s perceptions of authentic leadership, which in turn, predict salespeople’s positive development (work engagement and PsyCap).

Job performance of employees from the millennial generation is starting to be studied a lot because the proportion is starting to increase. Leadership style and job satisfaction are factors that are suspected to affect job performance. This study aims to examine the effect of ethical leadership, authentic leadership on job performance mediated by job satisfaction. This study was a cross-sectional design involving 350 millennial generation employees at the Tanjung Priok Customs and Excise Main Service Office, which were selected by purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with AMOS 26 software. The results of this study indicate that ethical leadership has a positive effect on job satisfaction and negative effect on job performance, but not significant. Meanwhile, authentic leadership has a positive and significant effect on job satisfaction, but not significantly on job performance. In addition, this study also finds that job satisfaction has a positive and significant effect on job performance and acts as a mediator in the influence of authentic leadership and ethical leadership on job performance. These results build and enrich models of the influence of ethical leadership, authentic leadership, job satisfaction on job performance in existing. Penelitian ini bertujuan menguji pengaruh ethical leadership, authentic leadership terhadap job performance yang dimediasi job satisfaction. Penelitian ini berdesain crosssectional yang melibatkan 350 pegawai generasi milenial Kantor Pelayanan Utama Tipe A Bea dan Cukai Tanjung Priok yang dipilih secara purposive sampling. Data dianalisis menggunakan Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) dengan perangkat lunak AMOS 26. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ethical leadership berpengaruh positif terhadap job satisfaction dan negatif terhadap job performance, tetapi tidak signifikan. Sementara itu, authentic leadership berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap job satisfaction, tetapi tidak signifikan terhadap job performance Selain itu, penelitian ini juga mendapatkan bahwa job satisfaction berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap job performance dan berperan sebagai mediator dalam pengaruh authentic leadership  dan ethical leadership terhadap job performance. Hasil ini membangun dan memperkaya model pengaruh ethical leadership, authentic leadership, job satisfaction terhadap job performance yang sudah ada. Selain itu, penelitian ini merekomendasikan  agar atasan memiliki kepribadian yang disenangi bawahan, sehingga berdampak pada job satisfaction dan job performance bawahan. We conducted a survey to examine the influence of authentic leadership on employees' unethical pro-organizational behavior, basing our research on the theory of organizational identification. Participants were 229 employees of four firms in China. The results show that authentic leadership and employees' unethical pro-organizational behavior had an inverted U-shaped relationship, and that the relationship was mediated by organizational identification. Additionally, moral identity moderated the relationship between authentic leadership and employees' unethical pro-organizational behavior. The research results provide suggestions for reducing employees' pro-organizational unethical behavior by changing the leadership style supervisors use, thereby promoting the sustainable development of the company.
