Distribution of organic matter and effect of wetland types and pH on organic matter were studied in sediment of lakeside belt in east Dongting Lake according to taking 56 samples from surface to 20cm and 52 samples from 20cm to 40cm. The results showed that the average content of organic matter was 15.40g/kg from surface to 20cm and 12.02g/kg from 20cm to 40cm in sediment of lakeside belt in east Dongting Lake. Spatial distribution of organic matter could be expressed as middle variation. Wetland types were classed into silt beach, lake marsh beach and reed beach in Dongting Lake region and influenced distribution of organic matter because of difference variance on hydraulic dynamics condition and retarding effect of vegetation on water flow velocity. Order of organic matter content in sediment was the lake marsh beach > reed beach > silt beach in 0-20cm and 20-40cm layers in lakeside belt in east Dongting Lake. Organic matter contents decreased in turn from 0-20cm to 20-40cm in lake marsh and reed beaches and increased in silt beaches. Values of pH in sediment were slightly alkaline in whole studied region. Negative correlation was established between organic matter content and pH value. The results will provide base data and science reference for controlling and recovery of sediment pollution in east Dongting Lake.

Background : Zn supplementation on stunted children in multiple research get the result inconsistent concerning the effect of Zn on children’s growth. Objective : To examine the effect of Zn supplementation to the change in height for index among stunted children age between 24-36 months. Methods: The research design is randomized pretest posttest control group design. The total of thirty six stunted children are divided into two groups. The treatment group is received syrup with 20 mg ZnSO4 twice a week for three months. The control group received placebo without Zn. Height for age z score (HAZ) on WHO Child Growth 2006 is used to measure height for age index while dietary intake and infection diseases are used as confounding variables.Result : There is significant difference in HAZ before and after supplementation at treatment group (p<0.001) and control group (p<0.001). There is a significant difference of the change in HAZ between the treatment group and control group (p=0.006). Percentage Achievement of Energy, Protein, and Zn Dietary Allowance have significant difference between the treatment group and control group (p=0.009; p<0.001; p<0.001, respectively). The change in HAZ, Percentage Achievement of Energy, Protein, and Zn Dietary Allowance are higher in treatment group than control group. Duration of diarrhea (p=0.045) and morbidity (p=0.019) are lower in treatment group than control group. Conclusion : Zn Supplementation among stunted children have significant effect on the change in HAZ, dietary intake, and infection.

Abstract To understand genetic variation and population dispersal in the Yangtze vole Microtus fortis calamorum distributed in the Dongting Lake region, 144 individuals were collected from six habitat patches. The mitochondrial DNA control region was sequenced and 17 haplotypes were observed. Of the six investigated populations, haplotype and nucleotide diversities of those from larger patches were higher than those from smaller patches. Nonparametric correlation analysis showed that patch size had a positive correlation with haplotype diversity (r = 0.943, P < 0.01). A neighbour-joining tree of the 17 haplotypes showed no geographic genetic structure among the six populations. Analysis of isolation by distance showed that genetic differentiation among the six populations was not positively related to geographic distance. Analysis of mismatch distribution indicated that the voles had passed through a population expansion. The pattern of haplotype distribution in the Changsha population suggests that the population was established by a founder effect [Current Zoology 58 (2): 211–220, 2012].
