The paper presents the results of the application of a practical approach for collecting data, which provides a simple, cost efficient, and easily reproducible method that was applied to obtain the necessary data for the status analysis of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. Important data for the estimation of the existing condition of the traffic system were collected through desk research from the appropriate institutions and organizations. Several surveys and focus group interviews were conducted, in which about 5000 residents of Podgorica participated. In addition to answering questions, residents made numerous suggestions, confirming the correctness of a participatory approach in the new traffic planning paradigm that provides the SUMP with crucial advantages. A manual cordon count of traffic on five bridges for the traffic of the motor vehicles, as well as on two pedestrian-only bridges, was performed by students from the study program Road Traffic, and there are plans to repeat this in the coming years in order to enable more reliable monitoring and evaluation of the obtained data. Contemporary quality management tools such as BYPAD and ParkPAD were also used to assess the status of cycling and parking policy, respectively. It is especially important to emphasize that Podgorica is the first city in the West Balkans, and the fourth city in Europe, in which the ParkPAD tool was applied. A wide range of negative phenomena and trends was identified, like a rapid increase in the number of registered vehicles, an increase in the motorization rate and the number of traffic accidents, increased non-compliance with traffic rules, excessive use of passenger cars and auto-taxi vehicles, insufficient use of unattractive public transport, walking and cycling, etc. Based on the data collected, key challenges in status analysis in Podgorica were identified, which the SUMP should try to overcome.

Head and neck injuries are the most frequent severe injury resulting from traffic accidents. Neck injury mechanisms are difficult to study experimentally due to the variety of impact conditions involved, as well as ethical issues, such as the use of human cadavers and animals. Finite element analysis is a comprehensive computer aided mathematical method through which human head and neck impact tolerance can be investigated. Detailed cervical spine models are necessary to better understand cervical spine response to loading, improve our understanding of injury mechanisms, and specifically for predicting occupant response and injury in auto crash scenarios. The focus of this study was to develop a C1–C2 finite element model with optimized mechanical parameter. The most advanced material data available were then incorporated using appropriate nonlinear constitutive models to provide accurate predictions of response at physiological levels of loading. This optimization method was the first utilized in biomechanics understanding, the C1–C2 model forms the basis for the development of a full cervical spine model. Future studies will focus on tissue-level injury prediction and dynamic response.

To investigate the association between childhood obesity and neighborhood-level socio-economic and environmental factors in Japan. The prevalence of childhood obesity in 2008 was obtained from annual reports of the School Health Survey. The following 12 factors were publicly available: income per person, ratio of people completing up to college or university education, population density, total length of roads per square kilometer, number relative to the population of food and drink stores, restaurants, large-scale retail stores, convenience stores, passenger cars, traffic accidents, criminal offenses, and death by accidents. The ratio of people completing up to college or university education was inversely associated with obesity in boys and girls. No association was found between obesity and the other factors examined. An inverse association was shown between educational level and childhood obesity in both boys and girls. Further studies integrating associations between childhood obesity and neighborhood-level factors are needed.

The Science Council of Japan’s 2008 Report, “Aiming for a Zero Traffic Accidents Society,” states that “it is necessary to establish various driver assistance technologies based on the fact that most drivers make mistakes”; “for advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) technologies, cooperation between human operation and machine assistance, and social acceptability need to be evaluated”; and “new driver assistance by introduction of robotics technology and application of automated driving in specific operating domain should be considered in the near future.” A wide array of robotic technologies is expected to contribute to developing intelligent and advanced technologies for passenger and transport vehicles, as well as creating a rich future for the transportation of people and logistics. Over the past decade, researchers and engineers have attempted to achieve these goals. In 2015, the government announced a policy to make practical use and deployment of automated driving technologies by the year of Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. Now, looking toward the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, we organized a special issue of the JRM: “Innovative Robotics and Mechatronics Technology of Modern Passenger Cars for Zeroing Traffic Accidents.” This special issue features 16 papers carefully written and reviewed by field specialists. We express our heartfelt appreciation to the authors and reviewers who have contributed their expertise to this issue. We would also like to thank the members of the Journal of Robotics and Mechatronics board for giving us the unique opportunity to coordinate this issue.

The paper analyzes the changes in the number of traffic accidents fatalities in the Republic of Serbia. The statistical significance of the change in the number of fatalities in relation to the period before and after the application of the new Law on Traffic Safety was tested. The results indicate the significance of the change in the total number of fatalities, fatalities of drivers of passenger cars, motorcyclists and mopedists, fatalities of male persons and young people.

Traffic accidents according to the World Health Organization are unexpected events that cause injury, damage, and also loss to the owner (victim) and can cause death or injuries both minor injuries and serious injuries. The number of passenger car accidents from Aceh Barat to Banda Aceh through the laneAceh Barat - Aceh Jaya crossing is high from 2018 with 62 cases (63.86%) and 2019 with 64 cases (65.92%) from January to January August. The high number of cases was influenced by driver fatigue, unsafety condition, unsafety action, Length of service and the feasibility of the driver's vehicle. This type of research is quantitative research using cross sectional. The sample method used is total sampling, that is, all populations used as research samples are 48 people.The analysis used is univariate analysis and bivariate analysis. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of fatigue, unsafety condition, unsafety action, years of service as well as the eligibility of vehicles with traffic accidents on the driver of passenger cars in Meulaboh type C terminal. The results showed that there was a relationship between unsafety condition and unsafety action with traffic accidents, which was P value <0.05. Hereby it is suggested to the transportation department, the traffic unit, the land transportation organization to cooperate with each other in providing information about factors relating to traffic accidents as well.
