In the process of reintegration of the urban system new settlements are emerging on the urban rim, transitional zones are reurbanised, derelict areas within the cities are being deve-loped and degraded urban areas of derelict industrial complexes are being renaturalised. In the periphery combined research and production parks are being set up, in the open land-scape integrated business, trade and recreational centres are springing up. Decentralisation and recentralisation of focal points of development accompany the contemporary processes of reurbanisation and suburbanisation – they are simultaneous and move in two-direction i. e. to and from the city. We understand them as manifestation of a dynamic balance among contradiction existing between the centre and the rim. Deindustrialisation and relocation of production and distribution from the centres of gravity to the periphery generate extensive degraded urban areas within cities and between the city and suburbs. The periphery is being urbanised with the creation of new, dispersed and nonhierachical poles of development, and the city and inner city is undergoing reurbanization. The general environmental conditions in the city and in the countryside are being equalised, the potentials of development are being sought in the comparative advantages of local conditions: be it attractive urban dis-tricts, be it suburban entities or countryside areas.

ABSTRACTThe history of town gas is unique in the development of public services in urban areas. Indeed, gas was the subject of the first network infrastructure set up in cities. In Spain, its history is discontinuous because the networks were dismantled in the 1940s and 1950s. The purpose of this paper is to retrace the steps of the development of the gas network in a region where the Spanish gas companies took the form of early modern businesses. They contributed significantly to the dynamism of local financial markets, both in terms of enterprise configuration, technology dissemination and innovative management. However, the development of the gas industry remained subject to local conditions of supply and demand, to conflicts with local government and suffered from competition from electricity.

It is widely recognized that agglomeration economies are a crucially important factor in explaining the existence and growth of urban areas, and therefore should be explicitly taken into consideration in long-run urban growth analysis. Once such economies are introduced, however, the urban economy tends to diverge from a steady state equilibrium and may ‘explode’ without limit. A possible way to solve this dilemma is shown. First, a simple urban growth model with production and factor migration functions in the presence of agglomeration economies is set up. It is proved that the urban economy with agglomeration economies tends to approach a kind of balanced growth path in the long run, although the growth rate itself is accelerating without limit. It is also shown that if the total demand for the output of the city is growing at an exogenously given rate, a sustainable steady growth equilibrium exists and is unique and globally stable. Then, land is introduced to show that the availability of the third factor of production will make it more likely to achieve a steady growth equilibrium in the presence of agglomeration economies. Last, the model is generalized to include many factors of production.

The city of Kigali has been experiencing rapid growth in recent years. The city enjoys a variety of natural features such as wetland, valley, hill, and great scenery, however, fast expansion of urban areas and human activities could pose a serious threat to the natural environment, and the ecological sustainability. While wetlands, as nature’s kidneys, bring obvious benefits to both ecology and the socioeconomic environment, they have currently faced several problems in Kigali, such as pollution and the risk of decline in the area. This research is aimed at protection of wetland areas through landscape design, which could have a positive influence on maintaining the natural balance of ecology, as well as citizens’ health and well-being. The site study was Kiyovu wetland as one of large wetlands playing a vital role in the city’s character and spatial structure. The research employed observation, questionnaire, and mapping techniques, and the random sample consisted of 37 residents, workers, passers-by, and young people. Findings revealed that safety, environmental issues, accessibility, recreational activities, and quality of the wetland, were significant factors in order of priority that respondents had stressed over the design of the wetland landscape concept. The proposed concept highlighted recreation areas and the connection with other wetlands and green areas as a whole in the city, and it was derived from survey, mapping the results of questionnaires, and feedback from participants. In conclusion, Kiyovu wetland has an enormous capacity to put the idea of green magnet into effect across the city. However, the protection of wetlands without 1. Public awareness about impacts of wetlands degradation would be far less effective. The increasing demand for space, especially for settlements and built-up land, has an impact on the declining environmental quality of the area. The Spatial Plan that has been made is not able to prevent land conversion in urban areas so that the existence of Green Open Space (RTH) is increasingly threatened and the city is increasingly uncomfortable for activities, especially for joint activities. This study will discuss the "Identification of the Use of Green Open Land for the Development of Culinary Areas in Pluit, North Jakarta". The purpose of this study is to determine the availability of green open space in North Jakarta, as well as to find out the existence of matters concerning the misuse of green open space in Pluit, North Jakarta based on local regulations governing Green Open Space. The method used in this analysis is a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques in the form of secondary data. Based on the results of the study, it can be seen that the availability of green open land in North Jakarta is only about 5% of the total area, this percentage is still far from meeting the provisions of the law which stipulates that the proportion of green open space in urban areas must reach 30%. The development of the culinary area in Pluit has several violations such as Law Number 26 of 2007 concerning Spatial Planning, which only provides 11% open space, Regional Regulation no. 8 of 2007 concerning Public Order in DKI Jakarta in article 36, because it builds a culinary area adjacent to the High Voltage Air Line (SUTET) and there are buildings that stand on Green Open Land.

Design recommendations for the acceleration lane length are based on research and monitoring data made decades ago and have recently been the subject of discussions and innovations. Designing a highway acceleration lane differs between urban and non-urban areas by a large number of parameters. Specificities of an urban space, multimodal demands of traffic users, environmental requirements and inherited spatial relationships make optimization of the acceleration lane length a real challenge. The development of analytical, analytical-empirical and simulation methods for evaluating design solutions is generated by the desire to make the analyses performed in the planning phase as realistic as possible. Microsimulation traffic tools, such as VISSIM, enable the analysis of variant solutions and the optimization of road design elements for existing as well as for future traffic demands. This paper presents an analysis of two existing acceleration lanes on the southern bypass of the city of Osijek. Microsimulation results show that there is a potential for shortening the length of acceleration lanes in the current traffic demand conditions. Various scenarios of the increase in traffic of the main and secondary traffic flows have been analysed. The results were evaluated through the criteria of selected functional indicators, which are average delays and queue lengths. This research contributes to the methodology of applying modern simulation tools in the analysis and optimization of traffic infrastructure elements in local conditions.

This research study was conducted on socio-economic conditions of families living in squatter’s settlement of Karachi. The urban population is booming with unprecedented growth due to heavy influx or migration of rural population to the cities especially in Karachi. The rural families are migrating to the city in a way to have better employment; improved lifestyles in urban societies. Migrators usually accommodated in squatters’ settlements of Karachi because of high residing cost in urban areas. The squatters’ settlements are located at outskirt of the city on government owned lands. However the provincial government has set up Sindh Katchi Abadi Authority (SKAA) department for upgrading or regularizing Katchi Abadis which are working under specific rules and regulations. In this study the role of SKAA also highlighted to analyze the working preferences of organization for the rehabilitation or betterment of squatter settlements. The research topic is chosen in order to investigate about the socio-economic issues of families living in squatters settlements. The data is collected from 200 respondents of squatters from squatters’ settlements which are situated in six different districts of Karachi. Data is collected by the self-prepared questionnaire which was prepared in a way to investigate socio-economic issues and problems of squatters’ families living in the settlements. This research found that whole sample of squatters is of migrators. These settlements are considered illegal and have no provision of basic necessities including drinking safe water; inadequate sanitation system; and low standard of housings.

Abstract The uneven spatial distribution of basic facilities within urban areas is a major problem for developing countries like Senegal due to the emphasis of accessibility disparities and the use of this services. The efforts to quantify the problem and its consequences on people are constrained by the lack of satisfactory data and methods. The study seeks to examine the spatial accessibility to basic services (access to water, health, education, economic infrastructure and transportation services) in a very heterogeneous urban system and to highlight inequalities in access for improving the geographical accessibility and to ensure equity. The article explore the use of spatial analysis method (Closest Facility) to measure the potential accessibility to services and facilities in the city of Mbour. The analyses uses all the inhabited houses of the city as the potential demand. Results emphasis unequal access to basic urban services in the city and a center-periphery model with a high concentration of services around the city. The study demonstrates the utility of this method for the identification of disadvantaged areas, decision making and planning of basic services. It also provides paths for improving accessibility in urban areas with a high density of population.

- This essay examines the decision-making process that led to the building of the freeways and highways that cross metropolitan areas in the USA, focusing on the cases of Syracuse, New York; Memphis, Tennessee; and Los Angeles, California. There are many decisions concerning transportation that affect urban areas, but the most import of them have to do with state highways and interstates. This essay focuses on the phases and the events that led to the cities' decisions on the highways that cross urban centers. These decisions were laden with serious consequences on the formation, growth, and decline of various models of urban development. The sources of information consist mainly of interviews and investigations, archival records and statistics. The cases examined lead us to believe that the fate of cities in this area mostly depen- ded on powers beyond their control tied in with transportation. In any case, the decisions in each case are not analogous to those of other cases. The outcomes in each city depended on phenomena that interact with each other and depend on particular moments in history and on changeable factors, such as the chance to obtain federal and state funding, the set up of the environmental laws, and the specific philosophies of governmental administrations on fiscal questions and on how to maintain the city centers vital.

Urban areas are dynamic, facing evolving hazards, having interacting strategic services and assets. Their management involves multiple stakeholders bringing additional complexity. Potential impacts of climate dynamics may aggravate current conditions and the appearance of new hazards. These challenges require an integrated and forward-looking approach to resilient and sustainable urban development, being essential to identify the real needs for its achievement. Several frameworks for assessing resilience have been developed in different fields. However, considering the focus on climate change and urban services, specific needs were identified, particularly in assessing strategic urban sectors and their interactions with others and with the wider urban system. A resilience assessment framework was developed directing and facilitating an objective-driven resilience diagnosis of urban cities and services. This supports the decision on selection of resilience measures and the development of strategies to enhance resilience, outlining a path to co-build resilience action plans, and to track resilience progress in the city or service over time. This paper presents the framework and the main results of its application to three cities having diverse contexts. It was demonstrated that the framework highlights where cities and urban services stand, regarding resilience to climate change, and identifies the most critical aspects to improve, including expected future impacts.
