This study was designed to evaluate the phytochemical and antibacterial properties of Garcina kola (Orogbo) and Cola nitida (Obi) extracts. Fresh seeds of Cola nitida and Garcinia kola were collected from Ago-Iwoye market, Ogun State. The ethanolic and aqueous extracts of the test plants were used against selected test organisms, Streptococcus pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas euriginosa and Escherichia coli. Disc diffusion method was adopted to test for susceptibility of the selected test bacteria to the extracts. Minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) and Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined. Bioassay data were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA. The result of the phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of flavonoid, phenol, alkaloid, saponins, tannins and phlobatanins. The result of the antibacterial activity showed that the ethanolic extract of the test plants recorded highest antimicrobial activity against test isolates compared to aqueous extracts. The tested plant seeds of both plants posses reasonable antibacterial activity but to varied zones of inhibition, with Staphylococcus aureus isolate having the highest inhibitory zones (21.33) mm while Pseudomonas aeuruginosa had the least inhibitory zone (6.00) mm. The antibacterial activity were however found to be concentration dependent (Fvalue= 3.996, Pvalue= < 0.05). All tested organisms were found to have definite MIC and MBC activities which ranges between 125 and 1000μg/ml for MIC except for Kola nitida that has no definite MBC below 1000μg/ml. Background: The incidence of cognitive decline has been proposed to rise exponentially in coming years. Therapies targeting molecular pathways involved in enhancement of memory and energy regulation could be a major breakthrough in prevention or management of dementia in susceptible populations. Objectives: This study investigated the effects of aqueous extracts of Cola nitida (AECONS) and Garcinia kola (AEGAK) on glutamate level and Na+/K+-ATPase activity in the hippocampus and hypothalamus of male Wistar rats. Methods: Adult male Wistar rats (170-200) were randomly allotted into groups (n=5/group); control (distilled water p.o.), AECONS1 (200 mg/kg), AECONS2 (400 mg/kg), AEGAK1 (200 mg/kg), AEGAK2 (400 mg/kg), AECONS1+AEGAK1 and AECONS2+AEGAK2. The extract was prepared and the administration was done daily for 6 weeks. Results and Discussion: Administration of AECONS or AEGAK increased plasma, hippocampal and hypothalamic glutamate, Na+/K+-ATPase activity, NO, SOD except hippocampal glutamate in AECONS1/AEGAK1, Na+/K+-ATPase activity and SOD in AEGAK1, hypothalamic glutamate and SOD in AECONS1 when compared with control. Besides, MDA level decreased in AEGAK2 and hippocampal but not hypothalamic MDA decreased in AEGAK1 compared with control. However, concomitant administration of AECONS and AEGAK enhanced plasma, hippocampal and hypothalamic biomarkers except hypothalamic MDA level. The present study demonstrates that AECONS and AEGAK synergistically enhances hippocampal and hypothalamic glutamate and Na+/K+-ATPase activity, which are accompanied by NO and SOD-dependent antioxidant enrichment. Conclusion: These findings therefore suggest that AECONS+AEGAK could be a better therapeutic candidate in hippocampal-hypothalamic-related neurodegenerative diseases.

The emergence of infectious diseases, particularly staphylococcal infections, treatment failures and the more high cost of treatment of infections caused by resistant staphylococci called to find other care alternatives. This study was initiated to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the aqueous extract from Garcinia kola almonds on the in vitro growth of Staphylococcus aureus strains. The methods of diffusion in agar and liquid media were used for susceptibility testing and MIC and MBC determination. The tests were performed on four strains of S. aureus and one reference strain. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of the extracts ranged from 3.12 mg/mL and 12.5 mg/mL and the minimum bactericidal concentrations between 6.25 mg/mL and 25 mg/mL. The lowest value of MIC and MBC was observed with S. aureus ATCC 29213 while the greatest value of these same parameters was obtained on S. aureus 993C/18 and S. aureus 1075C/18. The aqueous almonds extract of Garcinia kola had a bactericidal activity on all the strains of S. aureus studied. This could justify the use of Garcinia kola almonds in the treatment of various diseases in traditional society.
