In order to assess the potability and agricultural application of Mini-Whuo stream in Eliozu Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria; the physicochemical properties, heavy metal levels (Fe, Cr, Cd, Pb & Ni) and microbiological load of water were evaluated. Five stations were established and sampling made for a period of six months (May-October 2019). Various water samples were collected for the analysis of physicochemical properties, heavy metal and microbiological levels, using titrimetric, spectrophotometric and microbiological methods respectively. Results obtained from the analyses showed that, temperature ranged between (28.7±0.7-30.9±1.9ºC), pH (6.4±0.0-6.7±0.3), electrical conductivity (82±20-172.0±14 µS/cm), total dissolved solids (41±1-86.5±71.1mg/l), turbidity (8.1±1.6-18.1±2.8 NTU), chloride (5.60±1.63-7.76±0.96 mg/l). Levels of heavy metals analyzed for water were below detection limit of 0.01mg/l, except for Fe which ranged between (3±1-4.6±0.8 mg/l). Microbiological study of water showed that the water had (2.6±0.5-6.4±0.6 x103 cfu/MLN) count of total heterotrophic bacteria, (44.3±9- 323.8±44 MPN/100ml-1) count of total coliform bacteria count and (4.3±2.7-59.5±16.9 MPN/100ml-1) faecal coliform bacteria count. From the result of analyses it was observed that iron, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, and the microbiological load of the water were high when compared with WHO standards, and this may be attributed to the disposal of wastes such as, human and animal wastes into the water body. Water quality index (WQI) method according to the weighted arithmetic WQI, where (WQI < 50 = excellent water quality), (50 > WQI < 100 = good water quality), (100 > WQI < 200 = poor water quality), (200 > WQI < 300 = very poor water quality), and (WQI > 300 = unfit for drinking). Based on the WQI calculated for the Mini-Whuo stream 1156, the stream is not suitable for domestic use.

This study was conducted to determine the quality of drinking well water near dumpsite at Ogidi-Oloje, Ilorin, Kwara State. Open wells near dumpsite could be polluted due to percolation of chemicals from the decomposition of refuse and scraps of electronic boards having potential of causing diseases to man. Most people at Ogidi-Oloje Ilorin depend on open wells near dumpsite for drinking water during dry season. Water samples were collected from seven open wells (W1 - W6) 9.2 - 18.2 m away from dumpsite and the control well W7 was 45.0 m away from the dumpsite. Physicochemical and bacteriological properties were determined from the water samples during dry season (March, 2019) and rainy season (July, 2019). Phosphate, Cadmium, Lead, Feacal coliform were not detected during dry season but only Feacal coliform was not detected in the water during rainy season. All the values of physicochemical properties of the water were within WHO permissible limits except Iron and Cadmium that above the limits which could cause diseases to mankind. Values of Iron during dry season for six well sources were 3.61, 4.02, 4.26, 3.25, 5.14 and 7.24 mg/L while values for rainy season and control were 0.715, 1.410, 0.650, 0.049, 0.780, 1.110 and 0.775 mg/L(control) but WHO limits is 0.03mg/L. Concentrations of Cadmium in the water during rainy season were 0.010, 0.015, 0.015, 0.020, 0.015, 0.015 and 0.02mg/L(control) but WHO limit is 0.003 mg/L. This study revealed that the water is suitable for consumption during dry season but unsuitable during rainy season. Keywords: well water quality, groundwater pollution, water diseases, dumpsite

<p>The objective of this work was to analyze the physicochemical properties (pH, temperature, ammonia, nitrate and dissolved oxygen) and microbiological and parasitological analyises in water samples from Mundaú Lagoon. All analyses were performed in the Research laboratory of the Centro Universitário Cesmac and the Central Analytical Laboratory Alagoas Ltda, through classical equipment and alternative kits. The following results were observed in relation to the physicochemical parameters analyzed: pH: 7.29±0.395, ammonia 12.22±1.74 mg/L, nitrite 0.0105±0.001 mg/L, nitrate 0.199±0.092 mg/L and dissolved oxygen (OD) 5.136±1.031 mg/L. The microbiological analyses of water quality of Mundaú lagoon presented worrying and unsatisfactory results regarding recreational water practice, considering that in all samples (100%) the presence of total coliforms and Escherichia coli were obtained. Parasitological analysis did not reveal the presence of any parasites of medical importance.</p>
