The aim of this study was to identify variations of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and VIP receptor-1 (VIPR-1) genes that might be associated with turkey reproductive traits. One hundred twenty turkey hens were recorded for age at first egg (AFE), first egg weight (FEW), egg number (EN), total egg weight (TEW), laying period (LP), and broodiness. The DNA was isolated from blood samples and subjected to PCR amplification of the meleagrine VIP and VIPR-1 genes. The SNPs were detected by single-strand conformation polymorphism and the variant DNA fragments were sequenced. One mutation in 3’-UTR of VIP (G5846A) and two SNPs in intron 2 of VIPR-1 (C17687T and A17690T) were found, all of them novel. The associations of the three detected SNPs with the reproductive traits of turkeys were evaluated. The detected polymorphisms were used for marker-trait association analyses. The results of association analysis showed that G5846A on 3’ UTR of VIP has a significant association with LP, EN, TEW, and AFE. The G allele of G5846A was the favourable SNP allele for LP, EN, and TEW traits. The AA genotype of A17690T on intron 2 of VIPR-1 was significantly associated with higher LP, EN, and TEW. AGAA haplotype showed association with higher EN and TEW. These results suggest that the SNPs in 3’-UTR of VIP and intron 2 of VIPR-1 genes may influence egg production traits in turkey hens.Keywords: broodiness, candidate gene, egg production, single nucleotide polymorphism, VIPR-1

Pregnancy-associated plasma protein A, pappalysin1 (PAPPA) and pappalysin2 (PAPPA2) genes were implicated in regulation of hen ovarian follicular development and growth. Four novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified using PCR-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and DNA sequencing. Among them, A/G transition at position 172864 and T/C mutation at position 172952 in 3‘-untranslated region (UTR) of PAPPA named SNP A172864G and T172952C, respectively. A/G transition at position 77421 and T/C at position 77455 in 3‘-UTR of PAPPA2 gene named as SNP A77421G and T77455C, respectively. For SNP A172864G and T172952C (PAPPA), 360 Dagu hens were classified as AA, AB and BB genotypes based on PCR-SSCP patterns, and BB genotype correlated significantly (P less than 0.05) with higher hen-housed egg production (HHEP) at 30 and 57 weeks (wks) of age and higher egg weight (EW) at 43 wks of age. Consequently, these SNPs identified will be potential genetic markers to improve egg productivity in chicken breeding.

ABSTRACT: Data from 629 meat type quails were used to study association between two different sets of traits: egg production and reproduction. Traits related to reproduction were: body weight at 42 days (W42), average egg weight (AEW), age at sexual maturity (ASM); and production traits: number of eggs produced from 42 until 182th day considering intervals of 35 days each period (P1, P2, P3 and P4). Canonical correlations were used to describe the association between these two sets of traits. The canonical coefficients indicated that egg production and reproductive traits were moderately related (0.3475). The first partial period of production (P1) and age at sexual maturity were the most relevant traits among the analyzed variables. Results show that selecting animals with lower age at sexual maturity might lead to an increase on number of eggs produced until 77 days, although it might also lead to a decrease on egg weight. Breeding programs aiming to improve quails production should consider selection strategies to decrease age at sexual maturity and then, as correlated response, increased egg production might be observed.

The new original egg laying lines T, P and N selected at the Institute of Agriculture - Stara Zagora were used. Hybrid ?? ? ??, ?? ? ?? crosses were obtained and used for paternal line. Thereafter, the following breeding schedule of paternal and maternal lines was applied: Group I - (?????)? ?N?; group ?? - (?????)? ?N?; group ??? - ???N?; and group ?V - ???N?. The production traits of original and hybrid birds were recorded: live weight at the age of 8 and 18 weeks, age of sexual maturity in days, 150 days egg production, average egg weight - at 2-week intervals until end of lay; livability, heterosis effect. The live weights of hybrids at 8 and 18 weeks of age were statistically significantly lower compared to original lines. The values of heterosis for this parameter were negative for all four hybrid combinations. The earliest beginning of egg lay occurred in (?????) ? ?N? (162.08 days of age) and ???N? (163.11 days of age). The relative (%) heterosis for age of sexual maturity of studied hybrid combinations had moderate to low negative values. Average egg weights of hybrids were higher and the values of heterosis - positive for all four groups varying from 0.97% to 1.63%. The average 150 days egg production was lower in purebred lines compared to hybrids. The highest average 150 days egg production was determined in ???N? hybrids - 142 eggs. The heterosis effect for egg production in hybrids was significant.

The aim of the study was to investigateGDF9gene polymorphisms and their association with reproductive traits in chicken using DNA sequencing. A total of 279 Dongxiang blue-shelled (DX) chickens and 232 Luhua (LH) chickens were used for validation. We detected 15 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs): nine SNPs were previously unreported in chicken, two were missense mutations, and only three exhibited significant associations with reproductive traits. G.17156387C>T was significantly associated with age at first egg (AFE) and weight of first egg (WFE) in both breeds. Birds carrying the CC genotype exhibited higher AFE and WFE values than those with the TT genotype. The SNP g.17156427A>G exhibited an association with egg weight at 300 days of age (EWTA) in DX but not in LH chickens. The SNP g.17156703A>C affected the AFE and EN (total number of eggs at 300 days of age) in DX chickens. In addition, certain diplotypes significantly affected AFE, BWTA (body weight at 300 days of age), and EN in both breeds. RT-PCR results showed that theGDF9gene was highly expressed in stroma with cortical follicles (STR) and prehierarchal follicles. These results provided further evidence that theGDF9gene is involved in determining reproductive traits in chicken.

A study was conducted covering a total of one hundred chicken farmers in tribal dominated Boko Block of Kamrup district in Assam to assess different productive and reproductive traits of Desi, Vanaraja and Srinidhi birds under field condition. Information was obtained on mean body weight at various ages, age at first egg, annual egg production, fertility and hatchability and mortality rate. Body weight, egg production and egg weight were significantly (P£0.05) higher in Vanaraja and Srinidhi birds compared to Desi chicken. The age at first egg was significantly (P£0.05) higher in Desi chicken while compared with Vanaraja and Srinidhi under traditional system of management. However no significant (P£0.05) difference was found between Vanaraja and Srinidhi in their body weight and egg production at various ages. Higher mortality percent in Vanaraja (12.23±1.62) and Srinidhi (11.34±1.23) were recorded during 0 to 5 week. No significant (P£0.05) differences were found among all three groups of birds in fertility and hatchability.

Aims: This study was conducted to determine the influence of season and day length on production traits, egg characteristics, fertility and hatchability of laying Guinea fowls (Numida meleagris). Study Design: Factorial design was used for the study. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at the Poultry Unit of the Department of Animal Science Education, University of Education, Winneba, Ghana, Mampong campus from September, 2015 to December, 2016. Methodology: Four (4) hens and one (1) male per replicate and fifteen (15) per treatment were each subjected to 12 hours of artificial light and 12 hours of darkness (12L:12D), 14hours of artificial light and 10 hours of darkness (14L:10D), 16hours of artificial light and 8 hours of darkness (16L:8D) and 18hours of artificial light and 6 hours of darkness (18L:6D). Each group was replicated three times and reared in three seasons (Dry-December-March, Major rains-April-July and Minor rains-August-November) in a 3x4 factorial experiment. Data were analyzed using General Linear Model procedure of SAS. Results: Results showed that egg weight, hen-day egg production and egg mass increased (P= .05) with increasing day length. Similar results were observed for yolk height, yolk weight and albumin height. Most production traits, egg characteristics, fertility and hatchability attained the highest (P= .05) value in the major rainy season. Conclusion: It was concluded that day length of 14-16 hours is sufficient for improved laying performance and that breeding cycles should be planned to coincide with the major rainy season.

Objective. To assess the variability of egg production traits for nine SNPs, to search for traces of selection in the genome of Russian white chickens based on ROH patterns. Methods. The material for the study was DNA isolated from the blood of Russian white chickens (n = 141). Nine SNPs associated with egg production at p 5.16 105 according to GWAS data were selected for analysis. The frequencies of alleles and genotypes, the relationship between genotypes and characteristics of egg production were calculated, and ROH patterns were identified. Results. Significant differences between genotypes were found in terms of age of laying the first egg (p 0.005) and egg weight (p 0.05). The genomic regions surrounding the target SNPs were analyzed according to the distribution of homozygous regions in them. Conclusions. The substitutions rs317565390 and rs16625488 located in the 4.810.2 Mb region on chromosome 8 showed polymorphism, despite the fact that homozygous loci in this region of the genome are found in 58% of animals. For most SNPs, the prevalence of the frequency of one of the alleles was observed. As a cluster of increased selection pressure, a chick genome region in the 4.810.2 Mb region on chromosome 8 was identified.

The melanocortin gene (MC4R) was proposed as a candidate gene in this study for egg production traits (yield and weight) in Lohmann Brown hens. Two different primers from MC4R gene (MC4R-1 and MC4R-2) were investigated. DNA from blood samples was extracted to amplify the MC4R gene and the purified PCR products were sequenced. Alignment of sequence data from each group revealed that there is a variation in MC4R-1 at nucleotide 22 (T-G) (sense mutation) for high egg weight. Hens with the genotype produced significantly (P<0.05) higher egg weight compared to hens with the AA and BB genotypes. There was no significant (P>0.05) effect of this mutation on egg yield. There was no variation detected in MC4R-2. The detected mutation and the analysis of egg production means revealed a significant association between MC4R polymorphism and egg weight. The MC4R-SNP could be considered as a useful marker in chicken selection especially for egg weight.

The aim of the study was to evaluate egg production in three heavy Japanese quail populations created and reared in the Poultry Breeding Unit of the Trakia University – Bulgaria, marked as WG, GG and GL. In the experiments, 160 female birds from populations WG and GG, and 96 female birds from population GL were tested up to the 6th production month. The main egg production traits were controlled. The highest egg production for the period was demonstrated in group GL (79.84±4.46%), followed by group GG (76.33±3.40%) and group WG (72.11±4.16%). Quails from the WG group were outlined with least efficient feed conversion per egg (74.49±1.21 g feed), while those from the GL group: with the most efficient one – 64.93±1.41 g (p<0.01). The highest average egg weight in descending order was observed in the WG group (14.04±0.32 g), GG group (13.65±0.27 g) and GL group (12.79±0.29 g). The Japanese quail populations created and maintained at the Trakia University showed a potentially good egg production for the production type they belonged to, which makes them attractive for use in interline hybridisation schedules, including for production of autosexing stock layers.
