Paraguay is often overlooked by ornithological researchers as much of its literature is obscure, hard to find or published locally. This is equally true of Cathartid vultures. In an effort to bring this information to a wider audience, we provide a summary of the published Paraguayan literature for each of the four species of vultures that occur in the country, including a history of vulture studies, folklore, a local synonymy and an attempt at a complete bibliography

This study represents the first part of a series dedicated to the work of Rudolf Schlechter on the orchid flora of South America. The historical background of Schlechter’s botanical activity is outlined, and salient aspects of his biography, as well as his main scientific relationships, in particular with Oakes Ames, and the origins of his interest in tropical America are discussed. We also present a complete bibliography relative to Schlechter’s production on the orchid floras of South American countries, with his network of orchid collectors, growers and other purveyors, and checklists of all the new taxa that he described from each individual country.   Key words: bibliography, biography, history of botany, Orchidaceae, South America

Lovell Reeve was a major figure in 19 th Century malacology in England. In addition to his monumental Conchologia Iconica, he wrote, among other works, Elements of Conchology, the Conchologia Systematica, and The Land and Freshwater Mollusks Indigenous to, or Naturalized in, the British Isles. He co-authored with Arthur Adams the Mollusca parts of The Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Samarang. Reeve established a printing and publishing firm and produced not only his own works but numerous other natural history books, many finely illustrated. Biographical data are given and his introduction to the study of shells is discussed. That is followed by a short history of his printing and publishing firms which had several name changes over the years. Several contemporaries involved with Reeve in various ways are profiled and his business relationships are briefly treated. Reeve’s early interest in stereographic photography is described. Comments about his descriptions of new species are offered as are the opinions of others on Reeve’s descriptive methods. A few unusual problems involving some of Reeve’s taxa are described as is the manner in which authorship of taxa is treated herein. The major portion of the paper then follows, listing and describing his conchological publications and dating and collating those that were serially published, some never before accurately collated and/or dated. Non-molluscan serial publications that he owned and edited are listed with annotations. A complete bibliography of Lovell Reeve is given for the first time.

The article considers the unpublished heritage of D.D Shamray (1886—1971), book historian, bibliologist, library scientist and bibliographer, employee of the Imperial Public Library (State Public Library named after M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, now — The National Library of Russia, NLR), connected with his idea of doctoral thesis on the period of free printing in Russia (1783—1796) in the beginning of 1950s. Archival materials on this topic are stored in the Department of manuscripts of the Russian State Library (RSL) and the Department of archival documents of the NLR. The plan of dissertation “Free Printing Houses of the Eighteenth Century (1783—1796)” and the unpublished work “The New Printing House of the Academy of Sciences, 1758—1783” reveal the idea of D.D. Shamray. These materials show that the scientist intended to pay special attention to the study of social, cultural, political prerequisites for the emergence of “free printing”, including the repertoire of manuscript books of the 18th century, and to highlight the practice of private orders in state printing plants as a prehistory of free printing. D.D. Shamray planned to create “Book chronicle of free printing houses”, understanding it as the compilation of complete bibliography of published products prepared in private printing houses during the period of “free printing”. D.D. Shamray widely used archival sources, mainly the documents of the Archive of the Academy of Sciences (now — St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences), citing some of them in their entirety. However, the scientist did not reach the level of wide generalization and as a result, most of his texts on this topic remained unpublished. The study of materials on the unrealized plan of D.D. Shamray testifies to the important historiographical significance of the unpublished works for the complete understanding of the history of the scientific process in the field of domestic book studies and the history of book.

The dialogue of cultures is impossible without translations. The translations are included in the history–graphical process of the national literature. The history of the Armenian translations from Russian literature is exceptionally rich and simultaneously the possibilities of new interpretational comments are unlimited. The precise and complete bibliography is of great importance for the development of the translation process. The translator must be acquainted with the previous experience of the work. The references are helpful for the fiction apprehension. They must be changed and innovated during the time. This article deals with some references of different editions of L. Tolstoy’s novels.

Previously, an attempt was made to compile in a series of papers a complete bibliography of works related to physics at the University of Lviv. The period since the foundation of the University in 1661 until the division of the Chair of Physics in 1872 was discussed by Rovenchak (2014). Special attention was paid to the development of theoretical physics, starting from the first professor, Oskar Fabian (Rovenchak 2009), followed by the famous physicist Marian Smoluchowski (Rovenchak 2012), and finally the Interbellum (Rovenchak 2013). The history of astronomy at the University of Lviv, albeit without a special bibliographic section, is presented by Novosyadlyj (2011) and Apunevych et al. (2011). The development of the experimental physics since 1872 still awaits a detailed study. The present paper will provide some additions to this bibliography: firstly with the descriptions of several missing early works from the 17th and 18th century and then, with a presentation of the activity of Wojciech Urbański. It is followed by a couple of works by Oskar Fabian and Marian Smoluchowski. Finally, minor complements to the bibliographic lists from the 1930s will be made, including popular newspaper articles. We strive to present the bibliographic description as completely as possible, in particular by avoiding abbreviations in names and titles, so that readers can extract any information of their interest. All items were examined de visu except for those marked with an asterisk (*) after the number.

Fifteen leading philosophers explore a set of themes from the pioneering work of Gail Fine and Terence Irwin, in ancient philosophy but also in later periods and in systematic philosophy. The contributors discuss knowledge, rhetoric, freedom and practical reason, virtue and the good life, ethics and politics in Plato and Aristotle and beyond. The editors offer an introduction charting the scholarly contributions of Fine and Irwin and assessing their individual and joint impact, together with a complete bibliography of their writings. This volume is a token of our immense gratitude to Gail Fine and Terry Irwin for the benefit we have derived from their penetrating scholarly work. Through their writing, their teaching, their mentoring, and their broader scholarly output, Gail Fine and Terry Irwin have reshaped the character of Ancient Philosophy as an academic discipline. Their contributions to the discipline do not, however, end there. On the contrary, their wide-ranging achievements extend into all periods of the history of philosophy and indeed into several areas more systematic than historical.

The publication is the first complete study in the form of an academic catalogue of the artistic works by Cyprian Norwid (1821-1883), one of the most outstanding authors in the history of Polish culture. The complete, seven-volume edition of the catalogue will include all that was drawn, painted or created in any other technique, that is, it includes drawings, watercolors, paintings and oil studies as well as graphic works, designs for sculptures and medallic works. Apart from the works that have been preserved, also ones that are considered lost, but were published during the artist’s life or after his death, as well as works we only know by their titles or from even minor mentions will be included. The catalogue will include both works with indisputable artistic value and rough sketches like notes in the form of drawings; and also, apart from loose compositions – works drawn on pages of sketchbooks and albums; moreover, drawings that are found in Norwid’s artistic and journalistic texts, in his letters and notes. The fifth volume of the catalogue contains the third, and at the same time last part of the chapter: Loose works, containing the remaining drawings and watercolors (not dated) and works in other techniques: graphics, oil paintings and sculptures. Each catalogue item contains complete information on the work, along with its complete bibliography and a color illustration.
