Background: Research on aspects of neurodevelopment such as feeding and swallowing difficulties in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is limited in low and middle income countries such as South Africa. Method: A descriptive comparative group design was used to investigate feeding and swallowing difficulties of young children with ASD in comparison to typically developing peers. The Brief Autism Mealtime Behavioural Inventory (BAMBI) was used. Results: Findings indicated a significant difference in the severity of feeding and swallowing difficulties between the two groups. Difficulties such as food selectivity, sensory processing difficulties, oral-motor difficulties and symptoms of dysphagia were iden- tified. The findings added to the existing global literature on feeding and swallowing difficulties in young children with ASD but provide a unique first perspective on these difficulties in South African children with ASD. Conclusion: Findings also highlighted the use of the BAMBI as an adjunct clinical tool to encourage comprehensive parental report during feeding assessment in this population. Cultural adaptation of the BAMBI for future use in African countries should be considered. A better local understanding of the parental perspective on the multidimensional nature of the feeding and swallowing difficulties displayed by young children with ASD was obtained. ABSTRACT Evidence exists that young learners in culturally inclined communities of South Africa lack critical thinking and inquisitive skills. These learners are assumed to be culturally beguiled into believing that it is an abomination to question elders, and those who did so are tagged rabbles. Therefore, this study used the perspectives of community elites to expose the challenges young children/young one’s face in gaining critical and inquisitive skills along with possible solutions. The study is underpinned by Sociocultural Theory within the transformative paradigm. The study was designed using participatory research and unstructured interview to elicit information from the participants. The data collected were analysed using thematic analysis. The study revealed that children/young ones are being demonised as rebels, and stereotyped as uncultured, untrained and disrespectful, hence deprived of skill development. The study recommends organisational advocacy and curriculum restructuring, alongside strong school advocacy and awareness towards children/young ones’ skill development.

This study addressed the knowledge gap regarding South African parents’ view of their role in the education of young children as democratic citizens. The study was conducted with parents of children younger than 8 years in 2 multicultural primary schools in Gauteng, South Africa. The explanatory sequential mixed methods research design was used to collect data from parents in order to answer the research question. The quantitative data were gathered first by means of a questionnaire, and afterwards the qualitative data were gathered by means of semi-structured interviews. The research results showed that when educating their young children to democratic citizenship, participating parents consider various values of a democratic citizen as important including responsibility, respect, participation, norms and values, peacebuilding, love, loyalty, deliberations, kindness, commitment, non-racism, non-sexism, equality, reconciliation, self-control, forgiveness, compassion, tolerance, open-mindedness, a sense of belonging, rule of law and social justice. Participating parents also regard their example as democratic citizens, respect, participation and the creation of a safe, proud and free democratic society as important. They did, however, consider the media and other bad role models as challenges when educating their young children towards democratic citizenship. The most important finding of the study is the influence of negative societal and political factors on the attitudes and opinions of the participating parents. New insights that emerged from the study includes that these parents want to do their best to educate their children as democratic citizens in South Africa, in the best interest of their children as future democratic citizens, but are hindered by certain societal and political factors.

AbstractObjectiveThe aim was to contribute to the nutritional well-being of young children living in Duncan Village by investigating factors that influence clinic attendance of mothers and to formulate recommendations for optimisation of accessibility of primary health care (PHC) clinics in the area.DesignPHC clinic accessibility was evaluated by assessing the experiences of mothers who attended clinics in the area as well as the experiences of health care workers (HCWs) in these clinics of service delivery and its recipients (mothers/children), using the focus group technique. The ATLAS/ti program was used to analyse the data in the following steps: preparation and importing of the data, getting to know and coding the data, retrieval and examination of codes and quotations, creation of families and creation of networks.SettingDuncan Village, a low socio-economic urban settlement in East London, South Africa.SubjectsFocus group discussions (four to seven participants per group) were conducted with four groups of mothers who do not attend PHC clinics, six with mothers who do attend the clinics (including pregnant women) and four groups of HCWs.ResultsFour networks that provide a summary of all the major trends in the data were created. The results clearly indicate that mothers in Duncan Village perceive and/or experience serious problems that make it difficult for them to attend clinic and even prevent them from doing so. These problems include both the way they are treated at the clinics (especially the problem of verbal abuse) as well as the actual services delivered (no medicines, no help, disorganised, long waiting periods, being turned away). The main problem experienced by the HCWs with service delivery seems to be a heavy workload, as well as the fact that many mothers do not come for follow-up visits.ConclusionEfforts to increase the accessibility of PHC clinics in Duncan Village should focus on improving the relationship between mothers and HCWs and the heavy workload experienced by these workers.
