During the austral summer 2018/19, devastating floods occurred over northeast Australia that killed approximately 625,000 head of cattle and inundated over 3000 homes in Townsville. In this paper, the disastrous event was identified as a record-breaking subseasonal peak rainfall event (SPRE). The SPRE was mainly induced by an anomalously strong monsoon depression that was modulated by the convective phases of an MJO and an equatorial Rossby (ER) wave. The ER wave originated from an active equatorial deep convection associated with the El Niño warm sea surface temperatures near the dateline over the central Pacific. Based on the S2S Project Database, we analyzed the extended-range forecast skill of the SPRE from two different perspectives, the monsoon depression represented by an 850-hPa wind shear index and the 15-day accumulated precipitation characterized by the percentile rank (PR) and the ratio to the three-month seasonal (DJF) totals. The results of four S2S models of this study suggest that the monsoon depression can maintain the same level of skill as the short-range (3 days) forecast up to 8–10 days. For precipitation parameters, the conclusions are similar to the monsoon depression. For the 2019 northern Queensland SPRE, the model forecast was, in general, worse than the expectation derived from the hindcast analysis. The clear modulation of the ER wave that enhanced the SPRE monsoon depression circulation and precipitation is suspected as the main cause for the lower forecast skill. The analysis procedure proposed in this study can be applied to analyze the SPREs and their associated large-scale drivers in other regions.

Abstract Determining when a ewe is in estrus is important when using estrous synchronization and artificial insemination in sheep. This study was conducted to compare the efficacy of estrus detection patches (Estrotect™) and rams wearing marking harnesses for monitoring estrus in synchronized hair sheep ewes. St. Croix White (STX) ewes (3.5 ± 0.3 y of age, 89.7 ± 2.2 d post-partum) were synchronized using progesterone releasing inserts (Eazi-Breed™ CIDR) for 12 d. On the day of CIDR removal (d 1) ewes were administered prostaglandin (Lutalyse®; 15 mg i.m.) and placed with fertile STX rams in 0.55 ha pastures. One group of ewes (n =10; MH) was placed with a ram wearing a marking harness and a second group (n = 16; EP) had estrus detection patches placed on their rumps before being placed with a ram without a harness. Estrus detection was conducted using visual observations twice a day through d 7. A ewe was considered to be in estrus when crayon marks were observed on the rump or the patch was activated, based on product guidelines. Cumulative percentage of ewes in estrus was analyzed using the CATMOD procedure with treatment, day and the interaction in the model. All patches stayed in place on the EP ewes through d 7. By d 4 90% of MH ewes and 75% of EP ewes had been observed in estrus (P < 0.05). By d 7 90% of MH ewes and 81.25% of EP ewes had been observed in estrus (P < 0.05). With costs of $1.33 per patch or $29.33 for one harness and crayon the patches may be more economical when dealing with up to 21 ewes per ram. Estrus detection patches can be used on hair sheep ewes to detect estrus just as effectively as a ram with a marking harness.

1. The effect of total parenteral nutrition with or without glutamine enrichment was studied in septic rats after 4 days of treatment. 2. Septic rats treated with glutamine-enriched total parenteral nutrition survived sepsis significantly better than other TPN-treated septic rats: the cumulative percentage of deaths over 4 days in septic rats treated with glutamine-enriched total parenteral nutrition was 25% compared with 55% in septic rats given total parenteral nutrition without glutamine and 70% in septic rats given glucose. 3. Glutamine-enriched total parenteral nutrition resulted in improved nitrogen balance in septic rats: the cumulative nitrogen balance over the 4 days of treatment was the least negative as compared with other groups of septic rats. 4. The rate of loss of intracellular glutamine in skeletal muscle was markedly decreased (P < 0.001) in response to glutamine-enriched total parenteral nutrition in septic rats. 5. The rate of protein synthesis was increased (21.2%) and the rate of protein degradation was decreased (35.5%) in response to glutamine-enriched total parenteral nutrition in septic rats. 6. It is concluded that the administration of glutamine-enriched total parenteral nutrition is beneficial to septic rats and possibly to septic patients.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to further explore the recent conversation about the indicators for research evaluation through citation-based indexes. It evaluates the Cuban Biotechnology; Applied Microbiology researchers’ citation-based performance, according to their scientific production in journals of the ISI Web of Science database through the Relative Author Superiority Index. The methodology comprises six steps: (1) preparation of the data; (2) calculation of the Percentile Rank Index for each of the papers; (3) calculation of the Author Superiority Index for each of the authors; (4) Calculation of the Relative Author Superiority Index; (5) Comparison of the Author Superiority Index of each author to their Hirsch (H) and G citation indexes and (6) individual or group evaluation of the citation-based performance. The findings suggest that the group of Cuban researchers in biotechnology achieved a high citation-based performance within the analyzed period. The results show the effectiveness of this index to assess the citation performance of individual or group researchers when the impact factor of the researcher or group under evaluation is not high. In addition, the Relative Author Superiority index could be complementary to other previous indicators such as H-index, G-index or citation counts as it overcomes the limitations of the age of publications, length of the author’s career, and the self-citation problem that are present in other indicators.

Promoting respite and sleep impacts a patient's health and their inpatient experience. As New York State's largest health system, Northwell Health has been on a journey to create a healing and therapeutic healthcare environment. By establishing leadership accountability, leveraging patient feedback and adopting evidence-based interventions, system and individual adult inpatient hospital improvements have been noted. Between 2017 and 2020, Northwell's overall system HCAHPS “Quiet at Night” Top Box performance increased by 4.7, improving 30 percentile rank points when compared to the Press Ganey national database. This case study outlines Northwell's pragmatic patient-centered strategy and examines the unanticipated impact of limited visitation due to COVID-19 on this HCAHPS measure.

This is a case review of a male adult, GO, with nonverbal low functioning autism in his twenties. Previous psycho-educational assessment indicated that GO had a nonverbal IQ (NVIQ) of 73 within the borderline range, an adaptive behavior composite score at the extremely low percentile rank, and poor executive functioning (EF) capability with majority of the EF components falling in the performance range from borderline problem to problematic range. His family has expressed their concern if GO would be able to take care of himself when they are too old or no longer around to care for him. This short paper is an attempt to review all the previous assessment results and to find out if GO could be helped to improve in his daily living skills in order to lead a more independent life in the future.
