Greenhouse white fly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood); western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande); and strawberry aphid, Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell), are common pests of strawberries in California and are vectors of one or more viruses. Most of the viruses transmitted by these vectors do not cause symptoms on strawberry when the infection occurs individually. However, when one of the viruses (Beet pseudoyellows virus or Strawberry pallidosis-associated virus) transmitted by T. vaporariorum is present along with one of the viruses transmitted by F. occidentalis, C. fragaefolii, or other sources, it results in a virus decline of strawberry, which can cause significant crop losses. Stunted root and plant growth, purple coloration of foliage, and dieback of the plant are some of the symptoms associated with virus decline. Increases in T. vaporariorum infestations during the past few years significantly elevated the risk of whitefly as a crop pest and a disease vector. This article reviews virus decline of strawberry, symptoms of infection, and the current status of insect vectors in California strawberries. Accepted for publication 17 November 2015. The need to enhance local capability is one of most Kuwaiti government priorities that is embodied in the overall governmental plan. In fact, the Kuwaiti government has exerted efforts to forge the College of Technological Studies, CTS, in order to equipped students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are required by essential sector in the country’s economy (e.g., Oil and Electricity and Water). However, the success of the College of Technological Studies in achieving its objectives would rely on the competencies of the CTS management and academic staff in meeting industrial requirements. The shaping and enhancing of student’s ability in managing, maintaining, and adapting the imported technology in industries would rely on the level of academic staff knowledge, skills, experience, and attitude in meeting industrial requirements. The efficiency of the promotion system for academic staff would indeed contribute significantly to shaping the standard of the CTS graduates. The need to absorb and evaluate the current status of the CTS academic staff promotion system must be one of highly management priority in order to achieve the CTS overall objectives. The aim of this paper is to identify and examine the efficiency of the academic staff promotion system. Several issues would be investigated and examined. Among which: the criteria’s applied in selected and approving academic journals, the criteria’s required for promoting academic staff, work ethics and its relation to the academic staff promotion system, and the obstacles that might face the CTS management in applying the academic staff promotion system. The paper would conclude that unless the management of the CTS realised and appreciate the significant role of the academic staff promotion system, industries would continue to rely on expatriate for years ahead.

AbstractThe paper summarises briefly the current status of the major land using activities in the hills and uplands. The dominant land use roles of agriculture and forestry arc explained, as are other uses of recreation, water provision and wild life and landscape conservation. Land use competition in the hills and uplands is seen as the end result of conflicting policy objectives pursued by the major rural resource planning agencies over the past 50 years. The role of these agencies is analysed, as is their ability to meet their objectives in competition with each other. Finally, an attempt is made to establish a quantitative framework within which the interests of the various groups are recognised and priorities in land use can be determined.

Abstract Mortality from colorectal cancer is reduced through screening and early detection; moreover, removal of neoplastic lesions can reduce cancer incidence. While understanding of the risk factors, pathogenesis, and precursor lesions of colorectal cancer has advanced, the cause of the recent increase in cancer among young adults is largely unknown. Multiple invasive, semi- and non-invasive screening modalities have emerged over the past decade. The current emphasis on quality of colonoscopy has improved the effectiveness of screening and prevention, and the role of new technologies in detection of neoplasia, such as artificial intelligence, is rapidly emerging. The overall screening rates in the US, however, are suboptimal, and few interventions have been shown to increase screening uptake. This review provides an overview of colorectal cancer, the current status of screening efforts, and the tools available to reduce mortality from colorectal cancer.

This article analyzes the role of Haitian migration and Haitian transnational engagement in the past 20 years. Of particular interest are the various forms that this engagement has taken, its impact on the country’s economy, and the implications of Haitian migrants’ continued commitment to their home country. The article shows that dependency on Haitian migrants’ economic flows into their country has historically not been met by public policy lever-aging these flows and that under the current economic recovery period, opportunistic views aside, it is unrealistic to expect a strategy drastically different from that of the pre-earthquake period.

Fungus has been valued as one of edible and medicinal resources, and bioactive substances have been identified in many fungus species. In all of them, polysaccharides are the most famous and potent fungus-derived substances with antioxidant, antitumor, immunoregulation and so on. Although the isolation process and bioactive activity of fungal mycelium polysaccharides have been investigated in the past decade, the new bioactive activity and the mechanism of fungal mycelium polysaccharides are not systematic studied. These studies are still in progress and the role of polysaccharides as bioactive activity is especially under intense debate. The purpose of the present review is to summarize the available information of isolation process and bioactive activity, and to reflect the current status of these research areas with a view for future direction.

Perfusionists have a fundamental role in multi-professional teams involved in cardiopulmonary bypass procedures. The main objective of this study is to outline the profile of Brazilian perfusionists in the labor market by considering the evolution, current scenario, and future perspectives of this profession. Data from socio-demographic and professional profiles in active duty in Brazil were obtained through an electronic survey. The sample consisted of 157 perfusionists and showed that most of the professionals are female (58%), have up to 35 years of age (47.8%), and are married or are in a stable union (60%). Nurses make up 44.6% of the sample, followed by biomedical scientists at 31%. The salary range is related to the hours worked: the more hours worked, the higher the salaries (p = 0.007). Complementary training shows a period of transition and improvement in this specialty: 94% have a higher education level, 97% of whom are graduates in one of the six courses that recognize the role of professional perfusionists. There was no association between the time of professional performance and complementary training (p = 0.252). The professional profile of perfusionists is in clear evolution in terms of qualification since knowledge from the past, current scenario, and future projections trace new actions and professional insertion into different areas.

Acute pancreatitis is a potentially severe inflammatory disease that may be associated with a substantial morbidity and mortality. Currently there is no specific treatment for the disease, which indicates an ongoing demand for research into its pathogenesis and development of new therapeutic strategies. Due to the unpredictable course of acute pancreatitis and relatively concealed anatomical site in the retro-peritoneum, research on the human pancreas remains challenging. As a result, for over the last 100 years studies on the pathogenesis of this disease have heavily relied on animal models. This review aims to summarize different animal models of acute pancreatitis from the past to present and discuss their main characteristics and applications. It identifies key studies that have enhanced our current understanding of the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis and highlights the instrumental role of animal models in translational research for developing novel therapies.

This article deals with the transformation of the dede institution, one of the basic institutions of Alevism, throughout the urbanization. Dede institution played a primary role in the survival of Alevism until today. That is why it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that this institution is of key importance for an understanding of Alevism in Anatolia. Dedes have moved away from their roles in dede-talib relations, which are based on ocaks in traditional life, and also from their traditional functions due to urbanization. Today, cemevis and cultural centers in Turkey and the urban centers around Europe are widely run by associations and foundations. It is now clear that traditional institutions which had a significant power in the past, such as ocak institution, have been transformed. The socio-economic transformation caused by urbanization has also caused significant effects on the life of Alevis. It is necessary to compare the status of dede institution in the past with its current status in order to better understand this situation. There are great differences between the new and the old qualifications and functions of dedes in the new social order. The functions of Dede institution have either disappeared with time, or have continued with various changes along with the new conditions and new needs of the society. The change is still continuing.

Abstract The present brief contribution reflects on the evolution of IUU fishing, its current status, and possible future pathways to prevent, deter, and eliminate this practice. IUU fishing not only presents a question of management and conservation, but also entails serious human rights and transnational crime components. From these perspectives, this paper concludes that IUU fishing must be addressed through a multi-regime and multi-institutional process requiring the involvement of many stakeholders, including non-State actors. In particular, the effective settlement of IUU fishing disputes requires enhancing the role of international courts and tribunals as part of this process.
