Background: The proportion of Diabetes is becoming more aggregate around the universe, and it is linked to both genetic and environmental causes. Because of the rising prevalence of type 2 diabetes among young people, the number of pregnancies with this problem has increased. Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the proportion of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) among the pregnant mothers and their socio-demographic characteristics.

Background and objectives: Alteration of magnesium (Mg) and copper (Cu) concentrations in blood has been observed in normal pregnancy as well as in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The present study was aimed to evaluate the serum Mg and Cu levels in Bangladeshi women with GDM in their second and third trimester of pregnancy.Methods: The study was conducted at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital from July 2013 to June 2014. Pregnant women, in their second and third trimester, attending the outpatient department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Endocrinology of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital were enrolled by purposive sampling technique. GDM was diagnosed on the basis of oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) as defined in WHO criteria 2013. Blood glucose was estimated by enzymatic GOD-PAP colorimetric method. The cut off value for fasting plasma glucose level was ?6.1 mmol/L or ?7.8 mmol/L 2 hours after glucose load. Serum Cu was estimated by 3, 5-DiBr-PAESA method and Mg by Xylidyl Blue-I Method as per manufacturer’s instruction.Results: A total of 172 pregnant women in their second and third trimester were enrolled. Out of 172 participants, 86 had GDM and 86 were normoglycemic (control). The mean age of GDM and control groups was 28.6±3.2 years and 27.3±3.1 years respectively. The BMI was 26.4±1.5 m/kg2 and 26.3±1.3 m/kg2. Serum Mg level was significantly low (p< 0.001) in 2nd and 3rd trimesters in GDM cases (1.39±0.26 mg/dl and 0.93±0.15 mg/dl) compared to control group (1.67±0.3 mg/dl and 1.67±0.31mg/dl). On the contrary, serum Cu levels in GDM cases were significantly (p<0.002) higher in both trimesters (224±333.8 ?g/dl and 243.91±6.89 ?g/dl) compared to those without GDM (220.1±7.6 ?g/dl and 234.9±4.6 ?g/dl). There was significant (p<0.001) increase of serum Cu levels in 3rd trimester compared to 2nd trimester in both GDM and non GDM cases.Conclusion: There was distinct alteration of serum Mg and Cu levels in GDM compared to normal pregnancy.IMC J Med Sci 2017; 11(1): 25-28

Background: The gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), defined as my degree of glucose intolerance with onset of first recognition during pregnancy, is poorly understood due to low socioeconomic dynamics among the pregnant mothers of Rahim Yar Khan. It results in many maternal and fetal complications. This study was carried out to determine the frequency and socio- demographic profile of pregnant mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus admitted in Gynecological Obstetrics wards of Sheikh Zayed Medical College Hospital Rahim Yar Khan.Methods: The data for this cross-sectional study was collected during the period from 30-01-2017 to 30-06-2017. The data was collected from labor room and wards of gynecology Sheikh Zayed Hospital Rahim Yar Khan. This study was conducted among the 160 pregnant mothers in Labor room and gynecological wards of Sheikh Zayed Hospital Rahim Yar Khan, admitted during the study period. A predesigned questionnaire was filled by interviewing these mother shaving variables of age, education, residence, working status, BMI, family monthly income, total numbers of children, knowledge of Gestational diabetes mellitus and family history of GDM.Results: The frequency of GDM in this study was significantly associated with reproductive age group 25-34 years (64%), Illiteracy in mothers (53.8 %) from rural area (>50%) housewives (83%), BMI (Mean = 22), Family Monthly income (> 10,000 Rs.), Average no. of Children (2-3), Diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (15.6%), Family history of D.M (>50%).Conclusions: It is concluded that the frequency of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus was high. Early detection, constant sup0ervision, delivery with intensive intra-partum monitoring, facilities of expert neonatologists, proper health care education to pregnant mothers can result in good maternal and fetal outcomes without much morbidity.

Background: An alarming increase in Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) cases worldwide elevates concern regarding the consequences including fetal macrosomia, preeclampsia and many more. Plasma homocysteine levels which has direct impact on to endothelial function of blood vessels. The relationship of homocysteine and GDM is yet to be clarified.Methods: This single centre prospective observational study was conducted in Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Thanjavur medical college hospital among 50 pregnant primi and multi gravida patients with normal pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus to assess the association and comparison of serum homocysteine levels in both groups.Results: The mean value of homocysteine in control group was 3.8 ± 0.95 and in gestational diabetes patients was 16.30±6.09. On comparison, found that there was hyperhomocysteinemia among GDM patients with normal pregnancy and results were statistically significant (T= -9.024 Df=48.000 <0.05).Conclusions: In this comparative and correlative study, we found that patients with gestational diabetes mellitus have higher serum homocysteine levels in comparison with normal pregnant women. Hyperhomocysteinemia is found to be an independent risk factor for gestational diabetes mellitus patients. Further investigations are needed to follow up for these patients in the postpartum period and later in their life.
