A brief review of the state of music education in the UK at the time of the creation of the British Journal of Music Education (BJME) leads to a consideration of the range and focus of topics since the initiation of the Journal. In particular, the initial requirement of careful and critical enquiry is amplified, drawing out the inevitability of theorising, an activity which is considered to be essential for reflective practice. The relationship of theory and data is examined, in particular differentiating between the sciences and the arts. A ‘case study’ of theorising is presented and examined in some detail and possible strands of future development are identified.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using the authentic assessment on students’ attitudes involving interest and enjoyment when they learned Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy Topic. Selected sample of this research was 37 students of chemistry who enrolled in the Spectroscopic Methods of Analysis Subject, Mathematics and Natural Sciences Faculty, The State University of Surabaya. This research was conducted by using case study research. The data were gained through two techniques, namely, observation and interview, and were analyzed using descriptive qualitative. The findings informed that the students showed positive feelings toward the topic after and during learning constructed by using authentic assessment dimensions with embedded cooperative learning syntax, especially student’s interest and enjoyment. They felt interested to the topic because of three reasons, that are, learning the theory through practice, discussion intensively, and activity like the real workplace. Moreover, they enjoyed during the learning because of four reasons also, that are, discussion without reluctance, no forcing all concept at once, synchronizing between  theory  and  practice  occurring  well,  and  learning  in  a  team.  In  conclusion,  the  learning constructed through the authentic assessment dimensions was effective to foster students’ attitudes.belajar mahasiswa meliputi aspek student’s interest dan enjoyment pada Mata Kuliah Metode Spektroskopi Analisis (Analitik III).

The paper examines the issues of building maintenance of public buildings from an architectural design-based perspective. It considered the critical role design plays in achieving the optimal functionality of building services throughout the building life span. Design related elements and components which facilitate maintainability are discussed. Institutional buildings at the university in their current state are considered against these dimensions. The research adopts a case study/ review approach. The study focused on multi-story structures existing in the university. Findings of the study reveal poor considerations for maintainability in design processes, resulting in inefficiency of building services on a large scale.

This chapter draws attention to the emergence of Mobile Activism (M-Activism) in small states. More specifically, the chapter presents the findings of a qualitative descriptive research project, which utilizes a combination of case study and discourse analysis methodologies to describe how mobile smart phones were used by a small group of activists in Jamaica to protest a violation of the Rule Of Law (ROL). The findings demonstrate that mobile smart phones can be used as an effective and efficient tool for activists to engage citizens, government agents, and government, and gain support for their cause. The findings indicate that these smart phones can be used to access and convey messages to a wide audience of e-citizens and thus have the potential for encouraging support as well as interest in a cause. The findings have wide implications with respect to: 1) how mobile technology provides opportunities to transform the relationship between governments and citizens and 2) the possible future of protests and activism in small states. The findings also have wider implications for new and emerging innovative ways of achieving good governance not only in Jamaica but also in other parts of the world.

This paper examines the challenge of reconnecting probation knowledge, theory and practice throughout Europe. It will describe the history and rationale of the Thinking in Practice Seminar Series which was intended to promote thinking and debate about the supervision of offenders. It will consider how a collaborative approach might produce a greater groundswell of opinion and shared vision. The paper will draw upon practice literature and will use the seminar series as a case study to explore ways which allow probation services to continue to develop best practice. The paper will argue that the seminars have had some success in connecting with wider debates and could be replicated and developed further in other European jurisdictions.

Purpose: The firms have been facing steep competition from foreign companies due to increased globalization. The aim of the study was to find out the influence of financial capabilities on competitiveness of food and beverage processing companies in Kenya. Methodology: The study was informed by resource based theory. Empirical studies were reviewed to provide the basis for research gaps to be filled by the current study. Descriptive research design was employed while the target population was the 187 food and beverage processing firms in Kenya. A census was used where all the 187 companies were contacted. Structured questionnaire was used to obtain the primary data which was analyzed through mixed method analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze quantitative data while qualitative data was analyzed through content analysis. Inferential statistics were used to analyze the relationship between variables through the regression model. The findings were presented in form of tables, pie-charts and bar-graphs. Results: The companies however mainly relied on bank deposits as the source of funding for their operations. Financial capabilities significantly and positively influence the competitiveness of the food and beverage processing firms. The bank deposits, cash holdings and stock holdings create the financial muscle of the firms by ensuring that they are able to obtain adequate and high quality production inputs thus contributing to the companies’ success. The correlation analysis revealed that there was a positive and significant association between Financial capabilities and firm competitiveness (r = 0.698, p = 0.000). Regression of coefficients results revealed that Financial capabilities and firm competitiveness are positively and significantly related (β =0.638, p=0.000). Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The firms ought to seek adequate financial capabilities as a way of effectively financing their operations to gain competitiveness. The companies should embrace accountability and proper investments that increase their bank deposits, cash holdings and stock holdings through which they can sustain their operations towards competitiveness. The companies should embrace accountability and proper investments that increase their bank deposits, cash holdings and stock holdings through which they can sustain their operations towards competitiveness.
