Evaluation of the Efficacy of Some Pre-Emergence Herbicides in Cotton (Gossypium Spp.) in Northern Ghana

A field experiment was conducted at the Savanna Agricultural Research Institute to investigate the effects of pre-emergence herbicides for weed control in cotton during the 2014 and 2015 cropping seasons. The study determined the effects of different rates of three novel cotton herbicides with different formulations on weeds, yield components and yield of seed cotton, applied as pre-emergence. The treatments were laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications and consisted of Diflufenican + Flufenicent and Diflufenican + Flufenicent + Flurtamone as 500SC formulations of each and applied at the rate of 0.3, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 l/ha, whilst Diflufenican + Flufenicent + Flurtamone as 200SC formulation was applied at 0.4, 0.5, 0.8, and 1.0L/ha. A reference herbicide + product with active ingredients Promotrin + Metolachlor applied at 3.0l /ha and untreated weedy and weed free checks were included.  Results showed that. Diflufenican + Flufenicent + as 200SC applied at 0.8 l/ha gave the lowest weed dry weight (65.0 g/m2) similar to the reference herbicide (189.4 g/m2) and Diflufenican + Flufenicent + Flurtamone as 200SC applied at 0.8 l/ha (144.8 g/m2), whilst weedy check gave highest (548.7 kg/m2). Consequently, Diflufenican+ Flufenicent applied at 0.8 l/ha gave significantly (p<0.05) the highest number of bolls and number of opened bolls than the reference herbicide; but similar to weed free. Diflufenican + Flufenicent +Flurtamone as 500SC, applied at 1.0 l/ha supported tallest plants similar to Diflufenican + Flufenicent + Flurtamone as 200SC at 0.4 and 0.6 l/ha and Diflufenican + Flufenicent as 500SC applied at 0.6 and 0.8 l/ha and better than the reference herbicide. Diflufenican+ Flufenicent as 500SC applied at 0.8L/ha (81.3 %), Diflufenican + Flufenicent + Flurtamone as 500SC   at 0.8 l/ha (78.7 %) and the reference herbicide (76.3 %) did better (90 %) than weed free. Generally, early control of weeds with the tested herbicides using 0.4 to 1.0 l/ha minimized weed growth and supported high seed cotton yields.

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the adaptability of newly released papaya varieties at Chano Mille research site of Arba Minch Agricultural Research Center during 2019-2020 cropping seasons. The three hermaphrodite papaya varieties namely; Braz-HS1, Koka-HM1 and Meki-HL1 were used for the study and laid-out in a Randomized Complete Block Design in three replications. Data on yield and yield components were collected and analyzed by using analysis of variance (ANOVA) through Statistical Analytics System software. The ANOVA results revealed that there were significant variations among papaya varieties for the studied parameters. Significantly, the highest number of fruits plant-1, number of leaves and fruit yield were obtained from Braz-HS1 papaya variety. The fruit yield of Braz-HS1 variety was 46% higher than that of Koka-HM1. In general, Braz-HS1 papaya variety performed (in terms of number of fruits and fruit yield) better than the rest two varieties. An experiment was carried out at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2013-15, with eleven genotypes of plantain to evaluate their performances for yield attributes, yield and quality characters. The genotypes included in this investigation were MP001, MP002, MP003, MP006, MP007, MP015, MP018, MP024, MP025, ISD002 and BARI Kola-2 as check. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The genotype MP002 produced the maximum number of fingers/bunch (105.67) closely followed by BARI Kola-2 (103.00) and MP015 (101.00). Both the genotypes MP024 and MP025 showed the highest fruit length (21.70 cm), but ISD002 gave the maximum fruit girth (16.78 cm), which was statistically similar with that of MP003 (16.30 cm) and MP024 (16.33 cm). The highest yield and the maximum number of hands were produced by the genotype MP024 (47.81 t/ha and (8.33/bunch) followed by MP015 (36.70 t/ha and 6.33/bunch). Fingers of the genotypes required boiling time in the range of 20.00 min (MP001) to 15.00 min (BARI Kola-2). Flesh of all genotypes possesses pleasant aroma except MP002, MP003 and ISD002. Among the eleven genotypes MP001, MP006, MP007, MP008, MP015 and MP024 were found better when cooked as smashed. The genotype ISD002 took the maximum time (467.33 days) to reach the edible maturity stage of fruits whereas MP024 required the minimum (339.00 days). The genotypes MP015 and MP024 performed better than BARI Kola-2 in respect of bunch weight, fruit size, productivity index, yield, sucker production and qualitative characters.Bangladesh J. Agril. Nine genotypes of castor oil bean (Ricinus cumunis) were evaluated in 2011 and 2012 cropping seasons to determine their consistency of performance at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu State. Eight (8) accessions were selected from various locations in the south east, while a standard check was obtained from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. The study was carried out using a randomized complete block design with four replications. Data was collected on number of days to germination, days to 50% flowering, plant height at maturity, length of primary raceme, length of pistillate region, length of staminate region and number of leaves. The findings from the study showed that Zaria accession flowers within 80 days and significantly (P < 0.05) different from the other eight (8) accessions studied, except Udi for plant height at maturity the significant and comparable large genotypes for all the characters except number of days to germination; number of nodes and length of staminate region implies that there would be adequate gains in selecting the characters. The phenotypic coefficient of variation was found to be higher than the genotypic coefficient of variance for all the character studied indicating the influence of environment towards the total variance. The short height recorded in Zaria and Udi accessions which are at par is of a desirable trait for shorter plants are easier to manage agronomical and it also withstands lodging better than all plants. These accessions based on the agronomic characters studied were found to perform very well in Enugu south-east, Nigeria and is therefore, recommended to be grown in this region.

A field study was carried out during the two cropping seasons of okra to investigate the efficacy of plant extracts and synthetic insecticides applied singly and synergistic effect of botanicals with the synthetic insecticide on some insect pests of okra. Plots were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), with three replications. Three insect pests of okra (Podagrica uniformis, Podagrica sjostedti and Zenocerous variegatus) were observed on the field. Cypermethrin applied singly and Cypermethrin combined with plant extracts effectively controlled observed insect pests, followed by lone application of plant extracts (L camara, T. vogelii and Z. officinales plant extracts at 1st and 2nd season. Okra yield revealed that both plant extract and Cypermethrin combined with plant extract were not significantly different from one another at first season and at second season Cypermethrin combined with plant extracts performed better than Cypermethrin applied singly. This study indicates that the studied plant extracts can be good synergist for Cypermethrin in controlling field pest of okra.

The study to investigate the effect of Rhizobium inoculation and cropping systems on the uptake of macronutrients in shoot, root and whole plant of Phaseolus vulgaris and Lablab purpureus was conducted at Selian Agricultural Research Institute (SARI) for two cropping seasons. A randomized complete block design was used in a 3-factorial arrangement with two levels of Rhizobium (with and without rhizobia), two legumes (P. vulgaris and L. purpureus) and five cropping systems (sole maize or sole legumes, 1 row maize to 1 row legumes (1:1) i.e. 0 m or 0.45 m of legume from maize row, 1 row maize to 2 rows of legumes (1:2) i.e. 0.1 m or 0.2 m of legumes from maize rows). The result showed that Rhizobium inoculation significantly (P£0.001) increased the uptake of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in the plant parts and whole plant. Similarly, cropping systems significantly (P£0.001) increased the uptake of N, K and Mg in shoots and whole plant of P. vulgaris and L. purpureus but decreased the P and Ca content in roots. Legumes significantly increased the uptake of the macronutrients in shoots and roots but more nutrients concentration in shoots than roots for both cropping seasons. There were significant (P£0.001) interaction between; Rhizobium x legumes x cropping systems on whole plant uptake of N in cropping season 1 and 2. Regardless of the type of interaction, inoculated legumes maximized the uptake of macronutrients in shoots, roots and whole plant.

A study was carried out on plant density at the experimental field of the Institute of Agricultural Research for Development (IRAD) Nkolbisson, Yaoundé to determine the appropriate spacing to improve rainfed rice production in the bimodal rainfall forest zone of Cameroon. The experiment was conducted during the main cropping seasons of 2017 and 2018. The planting spacing used were 15cm x 15cm, 20cm x 20cm, 25cm x 25cm and 30cm x 30cm giving the plant populations of 444444, 250000, 160,000 and 111,111 plants / ha respectively using two varieties (Nerica 3 and Nerica 8). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Significant differences were observed in the growth and yield across the years. Treatments were highly significant concerning the number of days to the appearance of the first flower, the number of days to 50% flowering, and the number of days to 50 % maturity. Plants were taller with more tillers and gave higher yields in 2017 than those of 2018. The spacing significantly affected the plant height, number of tillers, and panicle length for both varieties. The interaction of spacing and variety was significant for the number of tillers per m2 and the number of seeds per panicle, however, it was not for the weight of 1000 grains and the percentage of full bales. The yield components determining yield increase were the number of panicles / m2 and the number of seeds/panicles. Nerica 3 variety gave higher yields compared to the Nerica 8, the closer the spacing, the higher the yield. There were a strong significance and positive correlation between yield, number of panicles, and the number of grain per panicle. The spacing that gives the highest number of panicle per m2 was 15 cm X 15 cm and this spacing gave good yield in the region where the study was carried out.

This study was carried out in green houses at the Twaitha site of Agricultural research directorate, Ministry of Science and Technology during 10 December 2010 to 20 February 2011. The study included effect of combination to fertilizer nutrient solution and foliar application on plants potato in the developing sand culture system Randomized Complete Block Design RCBD were adapted this study 8 treatments of fertilizer. F0 without fertilizer, F1nutrient solution, F2 spray megafol activated amino, F3 spray magnum urea & phosphate, F4 spray agroleaf composite balanced, F1F2 nutrient solution + spraying megafol, F1F3 nutrient solution +spraying magnum and F1F4 nutrient solution + spraying agroleaf . L.S.D. were used to compare the means at 5% level of significances: - The results showed superiority of all treatments fertilizer (nutrient solution with the fertilizer) to the attributes under study compared with control treatment F0, treatment of F1F4 significantly increased number of stem, high of plant cm, leaf area Dcm2 and dry weight of shoots of sand culture reached 4.33 stem/plant ,61.67 cm ,97.35 Dcm2 , 30.40 g Compared with the control treatment. And treatment F1F4 was significantly increased the yield of plant reached 672.00g and no significantly difference with F1F3, F1F2 treatments, while the ratio decreased in the F0 treatment reached 229.00g.

Blackberry is a shrubby plant specie which has a high economic importance among agriculture crops. Brazil is the major country of Latin America with the highest future scope for blackberries. For availability of good quality and maximum quantity of seedlings, the present study was carried out at the Universidade Estadual de Londrina,PR from January to March in 2013. The aim of the study was to evaluate the multiplication of blackberry 'Xavante' cuttings under different type of substrates treated with different levels of indole butyric acid (IBA). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with 2 factors, i.e., substrate (rice husk, vermiculite and coconut fiber) and IBA (0; 1,000; 2,000 and 3,000mg L-1), with 5 replications. Each replicate consisted of 10 cuttings. The variables studied were: cutting rooting, cutting survival, leaf retention, cuttings with new leaves, number of major roots, length of major roots and roots dry weight. Most of the variables were significantly affected by both substrate and IBA. Rice husk and vermiculite performed better than coconut fiber and provided the same results for most of the variables, while coconut fiber showed lower performance for all of the variables studied. IBA significantly affected the rooting and the number of major roots. It is concluded that for multiplication of blackberry 'Xavante', both rice husk and vermiculite can be used along 2,000mg L-1 of IBA

Recognition of high yielding and nitrogen (N) fixing groundnut genotypes and desegregating them in the cereal-based cropping systems common in savannah regions will enhance food security and reduce the need for high N fertilizers hence, minimize the high cost and associated environmental consequences. Field trials were conducted during the 2015 growing season at the Research Farms of Bayero University Kano (BUK) and Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru-Zaria to assess the yield potential and Biolog- ical N fixation in 15 groundnut genotypes (ICG 4729, ICGV-IS 07823, ICGV-IS 07893, ICGV-IS 07908, ICGV- SM 07539, ICGV- SM 07599, ICGV-IS 09926, ICGV-IS 09932, ICGV-IS 09992, ICGV-IS 09994, SAMNUT-21, SAMNUT-22, SAMNUT-25, KAMPALA and KWANKWAS). The groundnut genotypes and reference Maize crop (SAMMAZ 29) were planted in a randomized complete block design in three replications. N difference method was used to estimate the amount of N fixed. The parameters determined were the number of nodules, nod- ule dry weight, shoot and root dry weights, pod, and haulm yield as well as N fixation. The nodule dry weight, BNF, haulm, and pod yield were statistically significant (P<0.01) concerning genotype and location. Similarly, their interac- tion effect was also highly significant. ICGV-IS 09926 recorded the highest nod- ule dry weight of 2.07mg /plant across the locations while ICGV-IS 09932 had the highest BNF value of 140.27Kg/ha. Additionally, KAMPALA had the high- est haulm yield, while ICGV-IS 07893 had the highest pod yield across the loca- tions with a significant interaction effect. The result shows that ICGV-IS 07893 and ICGV-IS 09932, as well as ICGV-IS 09994 and SAMNUT – 22, were the best genotypes concerning BNF, haulm and pod yield in the Northern Guinea and Sudan Savannahs of Nigeria respectively with the potential for a corresponding beneficial effect.
