The content of four heavy metals (zinc, iron, chromium and copper) in muscles, liver and gonads has been studied for the five most consumed fish species (Cephalopholus taeniops, Scomber japonicus, Lagocephalus laevigatus, Pagellus bellottii and Pagrus caeruleostictus) in the Soumbedioune region. The samples were digested by acid digestion. The metal contents were quantified using a PF-11 type photometer. The results obtained show that metals such as zinc, iron and chromium are significantly higher (p <0.05) in the muscles of the four species than in the liver and gonads. However, the levels of heavy metals in the muscles, liver, and gonads of the five species are above the acceptable limit recommended by the FAO and WHO, with the exception of the copper levels in the gonads of the species Pagellus bellottii.

Zinc (Zn) deficiency is widespread nutrient disorder in lowland rice growing areas in Asia, especially in Bangladesh. Intensive cropping with modern varieties causes depletion of inherent nutrient reserves in soils. The application of Zn fertilizers results in higher crop productivity and increases Zn concentration in crops. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of Zn application on growth, yield, and grain-Zn concentration in eight varieties of rice. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with a distribution of Zn rates (0 kg ha-1 and 3 kg ha-1 from ZnO) to the main plots and rice varieties (BRRI dhan49, BRRI dhan52, BRRI dhan56, BRRI dhan57, Kalizira, Biroin, Gainja and Khirshapath) to the sub-plots. Zinc application improved effective tillers hill-1, grains panicle-1 and 1000-grain weight which impacted the grain yield of rice. Among the eight rice varieties, a significant increase of grain yield was recorded in BRRI dhan49, BRRI dhan52, BRRI dhan56 and BRRI dhan57 due to application of Zn. Zinc concentration of grain significantly increased in all rice varieties except Biroin. The highest grain-Zn concentration (19.1 mg kg-1) was noted in BRRI dhan57 with 3 kg ha-1 Zn and the lowest value (11.3 mg kg-1) was observed in BRRI dhan52 without Zn application. The highest percent increase of grain Zn concentration over control was obtained in high yielding rice variety BRRI dhan49 and the lowest Zn concentration was found in local rice variety Biroin.

Information in agriculture has an important role for farmers in efforts to improve their farming activities. Some empirical research on the use of WhatsApp as a medium for disseminating information among farmers is still limited even though farmers have used it. This study explores the use of WhatsApp in strengthening agricultural information for mango farmers in Pasuruan Regency. The data analysis method used consists of two stages, the first is Crosstab, the second stage is measuring the association is Chi-Square using IBM SPSS Ver software. 23. The results of the analysis show that the age of the respondent is the only factor that is stated to have no relationship with agricultural information via WhatsApp. While other factors forming individual characteristics, namely education, length of time using HP, and length of farming have a relationship with agricultural information via WhatsApp. The four factors that make up the accessibility of information consist of completeness of features, icons/images that are easy to remember & find, ease of navigation and attractive appearance/interface, all of which are stated to have a relationship with agricultural information via WhatsApp. In addition, the research findings provide an interesting picture, namely sending and downloading agricultural info videos is the only media literacy factor that is stated to have no relationship with agricultural information via WhatsApp. Meanwhile, other factors forming Media Literacy, namely Sending messages/chats and calls, Time to find Information and Discussions on WA Group have a relationship with agricultural information via WhatsApp.

This research is to study the accumulation and combined effect of three salinity levels (750, 1500 and 3750 ppm) and of heavy metals (3.26, 3.2, 2 ppm, 2, and 0.2 of Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Mo, respectively) on growth, yield, and uptake of green pea plants grown in piped hydroponic. Due to freshwater shortages, the use of hydroponic growth system was encouraged and used. The experiment consists of planting green peas from seeds into a 6” PVC piped system. After 2.5 months of growing, the experiment was stopped and plants parts were separated and divided into pods, leaves, stems, and roots, Then, physical, and chemical measurements conducted on them. Results indicated that (1) Salt concentration above 1500 mg/l was detrimental on the growth of green pea, (2) the best growth, yield, and biomass weight were observed at salinity of 750 mg/l, (3) heavy metals had positive effect on stems and roots of plants, but declined effect plant growth in general, (4) lines with nutrient deficiency were deficient in growth too, (5) sodium increased in plant’s organs in response to increased salinity in the feed solution, (6) the largest concentration of copper and zinc were found at the roots of the highest salinity level lines (36.05 and 211.58 mg/kg dry plant, respectively), (7) the hydroponic system proved to be efficient and economical and therefore, it is recommended for use for Palestinian farmers, and (8) results obtained in this study agree with previously published research with extent differences.

Low˗tech greenhouses (low˗techs) have been used globally to cultivate horticultural crops since many years, but their utilization in Bangladesh is a recent phenomenon. Moreover, information on altered microclimate inside the low˗tech is hardly reported. An investigation has been conducted in the Crop Botany Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University (24o72´N, 90o43´E and 18 masl), Mymensingh during the late autumn to winter seasons from mid-October to mid-February of 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18 years to find out the variation in microclimatic parameters between inside and outside of low˗techs and to evaluate the suitability of altered microclimate inside the low˗techs for off˗season production of high value crops in Bangladesh. Three low˗techs were erected in each year using bamboo frame covered with single inflated polyethylene film (thickness = 0.2 mm). Major microclimatic parameters inside and aside outside the low˗techs were measured with standard devices or techniques. Around 30 percent incoming photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was cut˗off by low˗tech cover during solar noon when the sun’s zenith gets minimum value (around 0o). However, this cut˗off portion of PAR was gradually increased with the sunrise and sunset when zenith is around 90o. During the daytime, low˗tech retains higher air temperature than that found at outside and the differences in air temperature between inside and outside of low˗techs was gradually increased after sunrise with a peak difference of 7 to 9 oC following the solar noon (i.e., 13:00-14:00 hour). No distinct variation in relative humidity was recorded between inside and outside of the low˗tech. Low˗tech cover retains higher soil temperature than that was recorded in outside. The variation of both air and soil temperatures between inside and outside of low˗techs was higher during the daytime but lower at nighttime or even at daytime when the sky remained overcast. The variation in microclimatic parameters under low˗techs not only protect the growing crops from climate vagaries during autumn, winter and spring seasons but also provide suitable warmer environment for growing many high value crops during that seasons and thus crop production in off˗season and/or season extension benefits can easily be achieved by low˗techs.

The aim of this study was to analyse the risk coping strategies among catfish farmers in Ikorodu division of Lagos State, Nigeria. Primary data were obtained from 100 catfish farmers with the aid of a pre-tested questionnaire and focus group discussion using multistage sampling technique. Descriptive statistics and multivariate probit regression model were employed for data analysis. Results revealed that majority (68.1%) of the respondent were male with a mean age of 41 years and a mean stock size of 1130. The major sources of risks in the study area were fluctuation in price (89.4%), cost and quality of feed (79.8%), high cost of labour (76.6%), quality of fingerling (75.6%), bird invasion (75.6%) among others. Reduced volume of stock (87.2%), treated pond before stocking (77.7%), purchased good feed quality (74.5%), and used personal savings (72.3%) were the major coping strategies adopted by the farmers in the study area. The estimate of the multivariate probit regression model revealed that sex, age, education, household size, catfish experience, start-up capital, farming status, membership of cooperative association and access to loan were the factors determining the adoption of risk coping strategies in the study area. Therefore, government, both at the federal and state level should intensify efforts at implementing the various agricultural support programs such as anchor borrowers, poverty alleviation fund and other subsidy programs that can help the farmers expand their capital base and better cope with risk in the study area.

The livestock farming especially dairy industry is among the important components of the livestock sector in Zanzibar in terms source of animal protein, income, and employment. The present study was meant to investigate milking hygiene and handling practices among smallholder dairy farmers in Zanzibar. Cross-sectional study was conducted whereby a structured questionnaire was addressed to 359 dairy cattle farmers. The assessment of milking hygiene and handling practices among smallholder dairy farmers on were analyzed and then judged based on the selected indicators of good dairy farming practices of FAO and International Dairy Federation (IDF) and IDF, (FAO, 2011) and Zanzibar Food and Drug Board standard. The results revealed low milking hygiene and good handling practices. In addition, based on the Zanzibar Food and Drug Board’ standards, farmers comply lowly with milk quality standards and food safety regulations. It was also found that farmers, traders and processors practised milking hygiene and handling measures like hand washing, udder and utensils cleaning milking boiling and packaging. However, key un-hygiene practices include the use of plastic containers, untreated water, and lack of teat dipping. It is recommended that, for safe and quality milk availability, farmers must be equipped with knowledge and skills on good milking hygiene and handling practices. There is a need to improve farmers’ knowledge and implement hygienic milking practices in the milk production process to meet required milk quality and food safety standards. In addition, awareness creation on the importance of good milking and handling practices will create behavioural change and lead to an improvement in milk quality in Zanzibar.

Chia leaf (Salvia hispanica L.) is an underutilized low-cost source of nutrients. The leaf is currently not widely utilized as compared to the chia seeds which have wide use in the food industry. The present study investigated the effect of solar-drying and oven-drying chia leaves harvested at different stages of growth on their nutritional and phytochemical composition. The chia leaves were harvested at four stages of early vegetative stage, late vegetative stage, budding stage and flowering stage. Oven drying was done at45 ºC for 24hours, and solar dried in a solar drier until a constant weight was achieved. The results indicated significant differences (p<0.05) between treatments and stages of maturity. Results also showed that solar dried had better nutritional and phytochemical retention over oven dried chia leaves. Crude protein was highest in solar dried leaves at early vegetative stage (FS1) 4.48%, compared to 4.44% for oven dried chia leaves. The fiber content increased from the fresh leaf at 12.4% to high content in solar dried leaf at the early vegetative stage at 23.33%, while oven dried leaves had high content at the flowering stage at 22.09%. There were minimal changes in fat content of the dried chia leaves compared to fresh sample at 5.908%, with high fat levels noted for oven dried leaf at the early vegetative stage (FS3) at 5.68% and solar dried leaves at 4.71% at the budding stage. The difference in fat content could be attributed to degradation during the drying processes. Ash content on the other hand showed difference at different stages of growth from raw samples for both solar- and oven dried leaves. Highest retention of phenolic content was recorded at 147.62 mg/GAE for solar dried leaves at the budding stage (FS3). However, oven dried leaf samples recorded high phenolic content at 124.06 mg/GAE at the late vegetative stage. The flavonoid levels were recorded highest for solar dried leaves at the budding stage at 299.8 mg/CE, compared to high content for oven dried leaves at the budding stage recorded at 270.4 mg/CE. Scavenging activity was highest recorded for solar dried samples at the budding and flowering stages at 100 µg/100g compared to oven dried leaves at 80.85 µg/100g at the late vegetative stage. Solar drying is the simplest and convenient low-cost technology for preserving the nutritional quality and retention of phytochemical ranges of chia leaves which will enhance their utilization when abundantly available.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a potentially contagious viral disease in cattle, caused by the Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), which belongs to the family Poxviridae. The virus is suspected to spread via biological vectors such as mosquitoes, flies, ticks, and direct contact. It is a significant economic disease caused by a virus that causes significant losses in milk production, fertility, abortions, import restrictions, and, in some cases, death in the livestock animals. This study aimed to assess the current state of LSD and its management on several farms in the north-western region of Bangladesh. Data were obtained from two Upazilas in the Natore district (Natore Sadar and Baraigram) using a structured questionnaire. During the study period of 1 June to 20 December 2020, a total of 34 small farms and 87 animals were monitored. The OIE guidelines directed the diagnosis of LSD based on current clinical indicators. MS Excel and SPSS statistical software were used to evaluate all of the data. Morbidity, mortality, and case-fatality rates were found to be 64.70%, 2.94 %, and 4.53 % in Natore Sadar and 83.02 %, 3.77 %, and 4.55 % in Baraigram Upazilas, respectively. Female animals that were newly matured (2-4 years) were a larger prone to LSD infection (43.1%) than animals of other ages. A total of 34.43% illness was found in young bull cattle aged (2-4). Bull and heifer calves are also vulnerable populations, with reports of LSD infection leading to mortality. Limb swelling is a common clinical symptom, and LSD-positive young mature (2-4 year) cattle had the most significant rate (18.39%) of limb swelling. The farm hygiene practice is a critical determinant in the spread of LSDV, and a large proportion of cattle (48.27 %) infected with LSD were on farms with poor hygienic management, compared to good (01.14 %) and medium (01.14 %) hygienic management practices (26.43 %). Despite the fact that mosquito nets help prevent mosquitoes, most owners (91.17 %) did not use one in their cattle barn at night. More study is needed in Bangladesh to improve the clinical management of LSD, identify risk factors, and understand the molecular characteristics of diseases.

The world population is continuously growing at a rapid rate, so a great challenge for this time is to ensure the security of food and nutrition for this increased population seeking for new crop as a source of food and nutrition. In such state mushrooms, a great source of protein, can be a favor that can be cultivated by landless people using agricultural waste material. The research work was about to analyze the effect of three lighting conditions namely dark condition (C1), medium lighting condition (C2), and sunlight (C3) on growth, yield, and nutrient content of pleurotus ostreatus (white oyster mushroom). Vertical farming technology was applied in mushroom production in order to minimize the land use. Three vertical structures each of three layers were used. This study also encompassed the effects of different layers (bottom later L1, middle layer L2, top layer L3) on the growth and yield of mushroom. The findings of this investigation revealed that there were significant differences in growth and yield at different conditions and structural layers. The highest average growth and yield (stalk height 3.87 cm, cap size 11.89 cm, stipe size 2.65 cm, crops per bag 15.78, fresh weight 60.03 g, and dry weight 17.03 g) was observed in dark condition (C1). On the other hand, lowest growth, and yield (stalk height 1.59 cm, cap size 3.67 cm, stipe size 1.51 cm, crops per bag 4.22, fresh weight 18.38 g, and dry weight 4.47 g) was found in sunlight (C3). Oyster mushroom cultivated in dark condition C1 also have high nutrient content. The study suggested that maintaining the absolute darkness is capable of producing high-quality white oyster mushroom.
