Background: A wide spectrum of lesions can be encountered in the upper gastrointestinal tract (GIT) especially the stomach or the gastric cavity. Endoscopy forms a crucial diagnostic procedure; it gives good diagnostic results in non-neoplastic lesions, endoscopy with biopsy is usually done in neoplastic lesions where the differentiation of benign and malignant lesions cannot be made always. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective cum prospective study and the duration of this study was 4 yearsfrom January 2015 to December 2019 and the total number of endoscopic procedures performed was 3978. All patients with symptoms pertaining to the upper GIT where Upper Gastro-Intestinal Endoscopy (UGI Endoscopy) is useful in diagnosis were included in this study. All age groups and both the sexes were included. Biopsy was taken wherever there was an indication. Results: In this study, a total of 3978 endoscopies were done, out of which 2689 patients were males (67.6%) and 1289 were females (32.4%), youngest patient age in this study was 13 years and the oldest was 79 years. Most of the lesions were located in the gastric cavity (48% - 1909 cases), followed by esophagus (34%-1353 cases) and least among the three in the duodenum (18%- 716 cases). Out of the 3978 lesions, 134 cases were diagnosed as carcinoma on endoscopy and they were confirmed by histopathological examination. Conclusion: Endoscopy plays a very important role in the diagnosis of upper GIT lesions and it is incomplete without histopathological examination of biopsied tissue in cases of neoplastic lesions

Introduction: The Upper Gastrointestinal Tract (UGIT) disorders are quite common in routine clinical practice and have high degree of morbidity and mortality. They can be studied by collecting tissue sample by way of fiberoptic endoscope and by subjecting the tissue to histopathological examination. Aim: To study the spectrum of histopathological lesions of UGIT lesions by endoscopy. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective observational study done in the Department of Pathology at PSIMS, Chinna Avutapalli, Andhra Pradesh, India, over a period of one year from March 2019 to February 2020 on 160 endoscopic biopsies. All UGIT endoscopic biopsies received were examined histopathologically. The data was entered into excel sheets and percentages and ratios were calculated. Results: Lesions of UGIT were more common in the age groups of 31 to 50 years and the male to female ratio was 1.9:1. The patient age ranged from 20 years to 78 years. Stomach was the common site for UGIT endoscopic biopsies i.e., 80 (50%) followed by oesophagus 50 (31.2%) and then duodenum 30 (18.7%). At all three sites, non-neoplastic lesions predominated over neoplastic lesions. The gastric malignancies were more common in antral and pyloric regions. Conclusion: Males in the fourth and fifth decades are more prone for UGIT lesions with predominance of chronic non-specific inflammatory conditions as compared to neoplastic conditions. Malignancy within the stomach, more commonly affects the antrum and pylorus. Malignant lesions are very rare in duodenum.

Lesions of Upper gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is commonly seen in surgical department patients. These patients are subjected to endoscopic examination and biopsy is taken for further histopathological diagnosis.  A clinical, endoscopic and histopathological diagnosis is made. This study was done to compare and correlate the results of histopathological diagnosis with endoscopic and clinical findings. Study Designed: A total 50 Upper Gastrointestinal tract biopsy cases received in histopathology lab were analyzed.  Material and Method: All endoscopic biopsies from upper GIT were received and processed. Paraffin blocks were made and sections were cut at 4 microns thickness and stained with routine hematoxylin and eosin stain. Their clinical and endoscopic reports were collected and compared with histopathological diagnosis. Result: After analyzing statistically the data, we found that endoscopy results were better than clinical diagnosis and more closer to histopathological diagnosis. Conclusion: Relation of histopathological diagnosis with endoscopic findings & clinical diagnosis was done in our study. We conclude that endoscopy is incomplete without histopathological examination of biopsy & so, the combinations of both plays an important role in diagnosis & management of upper gastrointestinal tract disorders. Background: With increasing usage of endoscopic procedures, gastrointestinal polypoidal lesions are commonly encountered specimens. Histopathological examination is crucial as biological behavior is dependent on its pathological nature. Materials and Methods: A retrospective descriptive study performed in Pathology department, Om Hospital and Research Centre from January 2017 to June 2019. The study included lesions received as polyp or polypoidal lesions of gastrointestinal tract for histopathological examination. Data was analysed using SPSS version 17.0. Gender, number and site were analysed using Chi square test to evaluate its association with neoplastic nature. Correlation with age and size was tested with Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results: Among 150 cases of gastrointestinal tract polypoidal lesions, 58% were seen in male and 42% in female. Hyperplastic polyp and conventional adenoma were the commonest non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions respectively. The age of patients ranged from 7 to 84 years with a mean age of 50 years. Rectosigmoid region was the commonest site. 134 patients had single and 16 had multiple polypoidal lesions. Most polypoidal lesion had size <1 cm. Gender, age, number and size showed no correlation with neoplastic nature. A significant association was found with site with notably higher number of neoplastic lesions in large intestine. Conclusion: A spectrum of histological types of polypoidal lesions were found in Gastrointestinal tract, most frequently in colorectal region. Hyperplastic polyp and adenomatous polyp were the commonest non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions respectively. A notably higher number of polypoidal lesions in the large intestine were found to be neoplastic in nature.

Introduction and Aim: Various non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions occur in the kidney. Pathological assessment of gross and microscopic features in nephrectomy specimens is essential for diagnosis and predicts the prognosis in malignant tumours. Materials and Methods: Case records of 46 nephrectomy specimens received between two-year periods were retrieved. Detailed gross and histopathological and immunohistochemical features were studied, and malignant tumours were analysed using CAP protocol. Results: Out of 46 nephrectomy specimens, 17 were non-neoplastic and 29 neoplastic. Males constituted 32 cases and females 14 cases. The commonest non-neoplastic kidney lesion was chronic pyelonephritis with hydronephrosis (29%). The mixed epithelial and stromal tumour was the frequently encountered benign tumour (50%). Renal cell carcinoma was the most common malignant tumour in adults (70%) and Wilms tumour in children (4%). Conclusion: Histopathological examination of nephrectomy specimens helps in diagnosing, staging, and planning the management.

Background: Diseases of gastrointestinal tract are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Objective: This study was carried out to determine the spectrum of histopathological lesions of upper gastrointestinal tract. Methodology: This retrospective study was conducted in the Department of Pathology at North East Medical College, Sylhet, Bangladesh during a 36 months period from January 2013 to December 2015. Endoscopies were performed using Olympus 150, forward viewing upper GI endoscope. The biopsy specimens received were fixed in 10.0% formalin and routinely processed in Haematoxyline & Eosin stain. Results: The present study included 135 endoscopic biopsies. The mean age with SD of the study population was 53.20±16.09 years. Among 53 cases of esophageal biopsies 8(15.08%) cases showed non-neoplastic lesions and 45(84.92%) cases were neoplastic of which 39(73.6%) cases and 6(11.32%) cases were squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma respectively. Among 6 cases of gastro esophageal junction biopsies 3(50%) cases showed non-neoplastic lesions and 3(50%) were neoplastic, of which 2(33.33%) were adenocarcinoma and 1(16.67%) were squamous cell carcinoma. Among 61 cases of stomach biopsies 34(55.74%) showed non-neoplastic lesions and 27(44.26%) were neoplastic, of which 1(1.64%) case was adenoma and 25(40.98%) were adenocarcinoma. Among 15 cases of duodenal biopsies 13(86.67%) cases showed non-neoplastic lesions and 2(13.33%) were neoplastic one of which was adenocarcinoma (6.67%). Among 135 cases endoscopist reported 82(60.74%) cases as neoplastic and 53(39.26%) as non-neoplastic, whereas histopathology revealed 77(57.03%) cases neoplastic and 58(42.97%) cases non-neoplastic. Conclusion: Common site of upper GIT endoscopic biopsy is stomach which are mostly neoplastic lesion; however, most common malignancy is squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus. Purpose of the study. To study the epidemiological pathology of the upper gastrointestinal tract among the population of St. Petersburg for the period 2015 to 2018. Materials and methods. We calculated and analyzed the incidence, prevalence, dynamics and structure of the pathology of the upper gastrointestinal tract in various age groups. The reporting forms of Federal Statistical Observation № 1 for 2015–2018 were the source of the information. Results. The gastritis and duodenitis has a high incidence among chronic diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The high incidence is can be seen among adolescents aged 15–17–20.3 per 1000. Peptic ulcer can be seen among people aged 18–55–1.2 per. Nowadays there is a problem of registration and accounting of gastroenterological hernias and gastroesophageal refl ux disease. This issue has to be solved and requires search for resolutions in the face of its prevalence and social signifi cance.

A wide spectrum of normal, benign, premalignant, and malignant lesions may occur on the vulva. Symptoms of vulvar disorders may be non-specific. Empiric treatment of vulvovaginal symptoms is common but usually not helpful. Though the varied clinical presentation and diverse histopathological spectrum of vulvar lesions have amazed Pathologists, only a few studies have been reported in the literature. The present study consists of a histopathological spectrum of vulvar lesions. 1.To evaluate the histopathological spectrum of vulvar lesions. 2. To compare the incidences of non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions of the vulva. Present study includes all types of vulvar lesion specimens received in the Department of pathology over a period of four years.    All thirty-nine vulvar biopsies received in the Department of Pathology were studied for histomorphologic features. The lesions were categorized as non-neoplastic, neoplastic. The neoplastic ones were further divided into benign, malignant, and premalignant. The age of the women ranged from 15 to 69 years (mean 36.18±12.71) with the maximum number of patients between 30 to 40 years of age. Non neoplastic lesions were more common (22; 56.4%) than the (17; 43.6%) neoplastic lesions. There were 15(38.5%) benign lesions while 2 cases (5.13%) were malignant. Among the non-neoplastic lesions, Bartholin's duct cyst was the most common histopathologic diagnosis (35.9%). The fibroepithelial polyp was the most common benign neoplastic lesion constituting 15.3%.  In the present study nonneoplastic lesions were more common than neoplastic lesions. Among the neoplastic lesions, benign neoplasms were more frequent than malignant lesions.

Background: Upper gastrointestinal tract disorders are one of the most commonly encountered problems in the clinical practice. A variety of disorders can affect the upper gastrointestinal tract. Endoscopy, in combination with biopsy, plays an important role in the exact diagnosis for further management.Objectives: To determine the spectrum of histopathological lesions of upper gastrointestinal tract.Methods: A prospective study was conducted in the Department of Pathology, Kathmandu Medical College and Teaching Hospital, Nepal from January 2015 to December 2016 (2 years).Results: A total 243 endoscopic biopsies were evaluated. Out of which, 219 cases were from gastric, 15 were from esophagus and 9 were from duodenum. Among the gastric biopsies, 77 cases (35.16%) were chronic active gastritis and 27 cases (12.33%) were malignant. The most common malignancy was adenocarcinoma. Among the 15 oesophageal biopsies, 12 cases (80%) were of non-neoplastic and 3 cases (20%) were of neoplastic nature. The most common malignancy was squamous cell carcinoma. Among 9 cases of duodenum biopsies, all were non-neoplastic, of which chronic non-specific duodenitis (66.66%) was the commonest.Conclusion: Endoscopy is incomplete without histopathological examination of biopsy and so, the combinations of methods play an important role in diagnosis and management of upper gastrointestinal tract disorders.Journal of BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Vol. 1, No. 1, 2018, Page: 67-74
