Abstract: Science education researchers agree that a better understanding of Scientific Inquiry (SI) is one of the main objectives of Scientific Literacy. Considering the Brazilian scenario in which SI is being implemented as a proposal for science education based on Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC), the aim of this study was to assess the notions of 169 elementary school students regarding SI by administering the VASI questionnaire. This study had a qualitative approach, we categorized the answers in Naïve, Mixed and Informed according to the 8 aspects of SI proposed on the original questionnaire. A low percentage of answers were classified as Mixed or Informed. The results corroborate to the argument that activities that prioritize the doing inquiry do not necessarily lead the students knowing inquiry. We consider that the VASI questionnaire can be applied by teachers now that different curricula based on investigation are been adopted in Brazil.

This paper analyzes statistically significant differences in some motivational and involvement in homework variables, depending on the course and the level of academic achievement. The sample consists of 535 participants of 4th, 5th and 6th Primary Education (from 9-13 years old). According to the academic performance, the results of this research indicate that students with higher academic achievement do more homework, manage better the time spent on them, perceive them more useful and even they are more motivated intrinsically toward them. Regarding the grade level, the results show that the attitude toward homework and intrinsic motivation and interest for homework decline as students advance to higher grade levels. Also as they advance, they spend more time doing homework and the time management becomes increasingly worse.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss how the superhero genre, when couched in a space and project that seek to act as a counter-world and is rooted in the life experiences of youth, can allow Latinx elementary school students the opportunity to create counter-stories. Such stories facilitated the process of creating “critical hope” in relation to oppressive political discourses. Design/methodology/approach This is a qualitative study conducted at an afterschool club in the Western USA. Using the superhero genre, elementary school students, grades third-fifth, participated in a project in which they created superhero and villain narratives set in their community. Findings The authors found that the superhero genre supported some Latinx students to develop counter-stories that engaged with and resisted the heightened xenophobic and racist discourse appropriated by then US presidential candidate Donald Trump in the context of the 2016 presidential campaign. These counter-stories allowed youth to engage in critical hope to imagine a better, more just world. Originality/value In a time when young Latinx students are continually subjected to racism and xenophobia promoted by political figures and taken up by popular media and the general public, it is necessary to support students in creating counter-stories and critical hope that push back against oppression. Findings suggest that the superhero genre can support Latinx students to discuss, dismantle and counter hateful discourses while striving for hope.

In making a poem, elementary school children write metaphors in the scale of their understanding. In other words, the metaphors they wrote were natural, not exaggerated, and not too exaggerated. This study aims to analyze and describe the metaphorical imagery in Covid-19 poetry by elementary school children. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The data source used was in the form of five poems written by elementary school students in grade 6F which were obtained from the website of the Darussalam Batam Foundation. The results shows that the metaphor widely used in a Covid-19 poetry is anthropomorphic metaphor because children tend to compare things with similarities in their personal experiences.

This paper seeks to access the stated knowledge about the practices and challenges faced by teachers and educators in the activities of plastic and visual expression in Primary Education in Portugal. As teacher training is nowadays organized in two cycles of higher education: a first cycle of initial training in basic education and a second cycle of specialized training with emphasis on supervised teaching practices, we tried to study some reports of these practices, made to obtain the Master's degree. In these reports, future teachers present the activities implemented in the school context as well as the teaching-learning procedures and strategies developed with elementary school students with the integration of different curricular areas.
