scholarly journals Adapting conventional delivery to cope with large cohorts: turning seminars into workshops and changing assessment

Teaching a popular postgraduate political economy module to around 50 international business and environment students (mainly Chinese) had always gone well. Delivery consisted of lectures and seminars with assessment via a 3,000-word essay. But with a three times larger cohort in 2017 things went wrong. The response from the teaching team was twofold. First to replace seminars with team-taught 2-hour workshops, to provide fewer targeted readings accompanied by specific questions for groups to answer, plus a redesign of the assessment, introducing a shorter more issue-specific approach based on short (500-word) answers to five questions chosen from ten, all tied to module learning outcomes and content. How did all this go? The paper highlights problems with the traditional approach and offers an initial evaluation of the changes introduced in 2018. Ultimately the paper addresses the strengths and weaknesses of the before and after and relates this to the changing demands placed on tutors charged with teaching large cohorts in a department going through rapid expansion. The case highlights the critical balance between volume and quality and asks difficult questions about the student experience and how universities respond to an increasingly marketized higher education sector.

Indian higher education (HE) system has undergone rapid expansion over the last two decades, emerging as one of the largest HE systems in the world. Expansion is accompanied by the challenge of ensuring comparable quality education across a diverse institutional spectrum. Simultaneously, academic reforms in the sphere of general HE have been pursued in recent years to align HE with global quality assurance frameworks. This creates an intrinsic pull in the system where international benchmarks juxtapose against demands made on HE institutions (HEIs) to meet the needs of and support first-generation learners coming from disadvantaged backgrounds to enable them to transition successfully to academic cultures of colleges. This article addresses the challenge for equity and institutional challenge to find ways to engender the pedagogical and scaffolding processes accountable to the ‘educational outcomes’ through ensuring attainment of specified graduate attributes.

This study aims to improve students' reading ability through the first grade scramble students of SD Negeri 002 Benteng, Kecamatan Sungai Batang, which are 28 students with 11 male students and 17 female students with heterogeneous ability. This study is based on the low ability of students' learning outcomes and lack of awareness of teachers to implement an effective, innovative, and cooperative learning. The study was conducted from September 3, 2016 to October 8, 2016. This study is a classroom action research (PTK) consisting of two cycles. Minimum completeness criteria (KKM) and average analysis are used to determine whether or not improvement of student learning outcomes before and after using the scramble learning model. The results of this study indicate that the number of students who reach KKM in the initial data is only 10 people (36%), cycle I is 16 people (57%), and the second cycle is 25 people (89%). The average student score at baseline was 68.4; cycle I increased to 75,9; in the second cycle increased again to 83,6. Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that the model of learning scramble can improve reading ability in Indonesian language students class I of SD Negeri 002 Benteng, Kecamatan Sungai Batang.

This study aims to improve the results of understanding of students' mathematics learning outcomes through the Realistic Mathematic Education (RME) approach. From the data analysis of student learning outcomes before and after the Realistic Mathematic Education approach was applied, students who completed only 10 people or 43.47% with incomplete categories. After the first cycle, students who completed increased to 16 or 69.56% with incomplete categories. For the second cycle, the number of students who completed as many as 20 people or equal to 89.95% with complete categories. From the results of this study it can be concluded that the application of the Realistic Mathematic Education approach can improve the understanding of the concept of dividing students into mathematics subjects in class V of Public Primary School 003 Pulau Kopung, Sintajo Raya District, Kuantan Singingi Regency.

This  study  is  motivated  by  the  low  learning  outcomes  in  the  Sub-covalent  Bond class of tenth-grade students, SMA Islam Haruniyah Pontianak. This problem is due to the  lack  of  students'  understanding  of  the  concept  of  Covalent  Bonds.  Therefore,  a proper learning model is required to improve students’ understanding of Covalent Bond concepts  based  on  the  characteristics  of  both  learning  materials    and  students.  This study  aimed  to  investigate  the  differences  in  the  student  learning  outcomes  and  the effectiveness of the question card-based on TGT learning in the Sub-covalent Bonding material. Using the pre-experimental method of one-group pretest-posttest design, the tenth-grade  students  of  Math  and  Science  Class  of  SMS  Islam  Haruniyah  Pontianak participated in this study. The data collection tools used were learning outcomes tests, observation sheets, and interview sheets. The results of data analysis revealed that the average  pretest  score  was  36  and  the  posttest  was  62.94.  In  addition,  the  t-test statistical  analysis  indicated  a  significance  value  of  0.00  (0.00  <0.05)  which  meanth that there were differences in student learning outcomes between before and after the question  card-based  TGT  learning  model  implemented.  The  gain  value  was  0.42.  In other words, the  question card-based on TGT learning model is effective in improving the student  learning outcomes with good category. Keywords: Covalent Bond, Question Card, Team Games Tournament (TGT)

Abstract Age-friendly University (AFU) campuses are reshaping how we think about teaching and learning in higher education. In particular, intergenerational classrooms are on the rise as shifting age demographics call for institutions to create new opportunities for older learners and encourage intergenerational exchange. Age diverse classrooms have distinctive needs and dynamics that instructors, and students, will need to learn how to navigate. This presentation will describe outcomes of one AFU institution’s attempt to identify the challenges and triumphs of intergenerational classrooms through facilitated instructor and student reflections in different classrooms over the course of several semesters. Recommendations will be offered for enhancing intergenerational exchange in classrooms across disciplines, as well as evaluating attitudes, logistics, and learning outcomes. Part of a symposium sponsored by Intergenerational Learning, Research, and Community Engagement Interest Group.
