<p>The current study provides the possibility of merging Laclau and Mouffe’s theory of discourse analysis with network theory to specify an alternative bedstead for studying discourse via a semi-automatic algorithm. To do so, first, considering the text as the discourse of complex system, a semi-automatic algorithm is implemented to transform the interacting linguistic components into a network which is depicted as a graph of vertices connected by edges. Then, some of the graph statistics, e.g. degree, weighted degree, eigenvector centrality, etc., are identified for characterizing the nodes as moments, nodal points, and/or nodal point of identity. Finally, the articulation of the discourse based on the above-mentioned components is studied. The results indicate that the approach is strong enough to pave a way for studying the articulation of the discourse from an alternative view, especially based on Laclau and Mouffe’s theory of discourse analysis.</p>

Abstrak: Artikel ini bertujuan menganalisis secara kritis visi dan misi 10 perguruan tinggi terbaik di Indonesia versi 4 International Colleges & Universities. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu deskriptif kualitatif. Penelitian ini merupakan analisis wacana kritis yang mengacu pada teori Michel Foucault. Teori analisis wacana Foucault mengacu pada wacana sebagai alat bagi kepentingan kekuasaan, hegemoni, dominasi budaya, dan ilmu pengetahuan. Berdasarkan hasil analisis ditemukan bahwa visi dan misi 10 perguruan tinggi tersebut mengandung unsur-unsur yang sejalan dengan fungsi wacana menurut Foucault. Hal tersebut didasari pada visi dan misi setiap perguruan tinggi yang memiliki tujuan mengembangkan institusi berkelas internasional, namun tetap dengan berdasar pada pengembangan ilmu pengetahuan yang berakar pada budaya lokal. Kata kunci: wacana, visi, misi, perguruan tinggi Abstract: This article aims to critically analyze the vision and mission of the 10 best universities in Indonesia version of 4 International Colleges & Universities. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. This research is a critical discourse analysis that refers to Michel Foucault's theory. Foucault's theory of discourse analysis refers to discourse as a tool for the interests of power, hegemony, cultural domination, and science. Based on the results of the analysis it was found that the vision and mission of the 10 universities contained elements that were in line with the discourse function according to Foucault. This is based on the vision and mission of each college that has the aim of developing international-class institutions, but still based on the development of science rooted in local culture. Keywords: discourse, vision, mission, college

Two common causes of filamentous bulking of activated sludge are low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and low food to microorganism (F/M) ratio in the activated sludge system. A dynamic mathematical model was developed to simulate the population dynamics of two groups of bacteria, floc-formers and filaments within the microenvironment of the activated sludge floc. An arbitrary grid of 50 by 50 elements was applied to a hypothetical floc of maximum 100 μm in diameter. The concentration of DO and soluble substrate was calculated inside the floc core under different bulk concentration conditions in order to simulate the effect of heterogeneous, gradient-governed microenvironments on dual species composition. Dynamic simulation runs were performed to calculate the growth of the two morphological types of microorganisms inside the floc under diffusion governed conditions. The results indicate that the method accurately predicts the onset of excessive filamentous growth (directly linked to bulking) even when traditional models neglecting diffusion limitation fail to do so. The positive feedback effect of the non-random (unidirectional) growth on the selective enrichment of filamentous organisms under electron acceptor (DO) or soluble substrate (F/M) limited conditions is demonstrated.

The present study aims at promoting a reflection on the relevance of the Discourse Analysis for the Translation Studies based on the theories of the main researchers for both areas. To do so, this paper is divided into three sections. In the first section, we deal with Discourse Analysis theories based on Brown and Yule (1983); Fairclough (1992) and Hatim and Mason (1990). In the second section, we present some aspects of the theories related to Translation Studies. In the following section, we raise some reflections regarding the interface Discourse Analysis and Translation Studies according to the theories presented previously. Finally, we present the conclusions concerning the research carried out in this paper.

Este artigo se propõe a realizar uma análise do discurso acerca de hereges e rebeldes no ambiente do protestantismo evangélico brasileiro, a partir da repercussão da obra do pastor norte-americano Rob Bell no Brasil. Para tanto, selecionou como corpus de pesquisa uma entrevista concedida por Bell à revista Veja e sua repercussão junto ablogueiros evangélicos quando do lançamento de sua obra “O amor vence”, em 2012.  Concluímos que quando Rob Bell decide expor ideias sobre o inferno que não se baseiam nem na autoridade da Igreja, nem em sua teologia ou tradição, adota um sentido sobre a questão que não se qualifica como legítimo ou literal. Por consequência a instituição deve lhe identificar como herege e desqualificá-lo junto ao seu potencial público leitor. Dessa maneira, buscamos entender os mecanismos de exclusão embutidos na classificação como hereges. Buscamos, também, compreender como funcionam esses mecanismos, através da análise de um caso concreto e atual. This paper proposes to conduct a discourse analysis about heretics and rebels in the Brazilian Evangelical Protestantism environment from the impact of Rob Bell's books in Brazil. To do so, we selected the corpus of research an interview by Bell to Veja magazine and its impact along the evangelical bloggers on the launch of his book "Love Wins" in 2012. We concluded that when Rob Bell decided to expose ideas about hell not based either in the Church's authority, or in their theology or tradition, he adopted a meaning on the issue that does not qualify as legitimate or literal. Consequently the institution must identify him as a heretic and disqualify you from your potential audience reader. In this way, we seek to understand the mechanisms of exclusion embedded in the standings as heretics. We seek to understand how to work these mechanisms, through the analysis of a concrete and current case.

In this chapter, the authors use actor-network theory (ANT) to explore the relations between uncertainties in co-design processes and the quality of participation. To do so, the authors investigate Latour's discussion uncertainties in relation to social processes: the nature of actors, actions, objects, facts/matters of concern, and the study of the social. To engage with the discussion on uncertainties in co-design and, more specific in infrastructuring, this chapter clusters the diversity of articulations of the role and place of uncertainty in co-design into four uncertainty models: (1) the neoliberal, (2) the management, (3) the disruptive, and (4) the open uncertainty model. To deepen the reflections on the latter, the authors evaluate the relations between the role and place of uncertainty in two infrastructuring processes in the domain of healthcare and the quality of these processes. In the final reflections, the authors elaborate on how ANT supported in developing a “lens” to assess how uncertainties hinder or contribute to the quality of participation.

The introduction outlines traditional understandings of literary culture in French and of French literary history in the Middle Ages and makes the case for an alternative view that is less Francocentric, and takes into account the networks outside France instantiated by the production and circulation of texts and manuscripts. The use and forms of French outside France are discussed and some of the theoretical premises of the book are also sketched, particularly Actor-Network theory and Derrida’s account of monolingualism.

The contact zone is described as the space of imperial encounter. Against a backdrop of work that has used Mary Louise Pratt's concept of the contact zone to examine culture-making, and destabilize normative understandings of division, distinction, and bordering, the paper interrogates the value of utilizing the concept in multispecies contexts. To do so, the paper considers the relationship between the contact zone and the concept of encounter, noting how they overlap and depart as approaches to questioning embodied difference, colonial histories, and immanent potential. Turning to the BBC documentary series Blue Planet II, the paper uses the concept of the contact zone and discourse analysis to examine its dominant ideas, frontiers of difference, and the means through which alternative geographies are both foreclosed and enabled. It demonstrates how the concept of the contact zone can draw attention to the ocean as the documentary's site of production, where different forms of knowledge, technology, people, elements, and non-human life grapple with each other in conditions of uneven power. In moving between narrative and oceanic contact zones, the paper raises questions about practices of knowledge-making, uneven structures of power, and decipherability, to demonstrate what can be gained from staying with the postcolonial framing of the contact zone as a critical tool of analysis in multispecies scholarship.

Networks are useful to describe the structure of many complex systems. Often, understanding these systems implies the analysis of multiple interconnected networks simultaneously, since the system may be modelled by more than one type of interaction. Multiplex networks are structures capable of describing networks in which the same nodes have different links. Characterizing the centrality of nodes in multiplex networks is a fundamental task in network theory. In this paper, we design and discuss a centrality measure for multiplex networks with data, extending the concept of eigenvector centrality. The essential feature that distinguishes this measure is that it calculates the centrality in multiplex networks where the layers show different relationships between nodes and where each layer has a dataset associated with the nodes. The proposed model is based on an eigenvector centrality for networks with data, which is adapted according to the idea behind the two-layer approach PageRank. The core of the centrality proposed is the construction of an irreducible, non-negative and primitive matrix, whose dominant eigenpair provides a node classification. Several examples show the characteristics and possibilities of the new centrality illustrating some applications.

Despite impressive technical advances in tools and methodologies and the organizational insights provided by many years of academic and business research, the underperformance of Information Technology (IT) remains. In the past and even today, organizations experience difficulty in managing technology, changing from system to system, implementing new technology, maintaining compatibility with existing technologies, and changing from one business process to another. These challenges impact significantly on business performance and will continue to do so if not addressed. As a result, many organizations have deployed Enterprise Architecture (EA) in an attempt to address these challenges. However, the design and development of EA has proven to be easier than its institutionalization. The study explored the development and implementation of EA to determine the factors, which influences the institutionalization. Two case studies were conducted and Actor-Network Theory (ANT) was employed in the analysis of the data.

In one currently dominant view on personality, personality dimensions (e.g. extraversion) are causes of human behaviour, and personality inventory items (e.g. ‘I like to go to parties’ and ‘I like people’) are measurements of these dimensions. In this view, responses to extraversion items correlate because they measure the same latent dimension. In this paper, we challenge this way of thinking and offer an alternative perspective on personality as a system of connected affective, cognitive and behavioural components. We hypothesize that these components do not hang together because they measure the same underlying dimension; they do so because they depend on one another directly for causal, homeostatic or logical reasons (e.g. if one does not like people and it is harder to enjoy parties). From this ‘network perspective’, personality dimensions emerge out of the connectivity structure that exists between the various components of personality. After outlining the network theory, we illustrate how it applies to personality research in four domains: (i) the overall organization of personality components; (ii) the distinction between state and trait; (iii) the genetic architecture of personality; and (iv) the relation between personality and psychopathology.
