<p>The present study aimed to evaluate acid-insoluble ash (AIA) as an internal marker for the measurement the coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) in rabbits through two experiments (E1 and E2). In E1, 48 rabbits were used to calculate the CTTAD of the same basal diet according to the European reference method (ERM), the AIA and the titanium dioxide (TiO<sub>2</sub> with 1 g of TiO<sub>2</sub>/kg diet) techniques (n=16 rabbits/method). The effect of feed sample quantity on dietary AIA content was investigated and total collection of faeces was carried out to calculate marker recovery. In E2, 48 rabbits were allotted to three groups fed diets with no sugar beet pulp (SBP0) or with 100 (SBP100) and 200 (SBP200) g sugar beet pulp/kg (n=16 rabbits/group). Each group was divided into two subgroups, ERM and AIA (n=8 rabbits/subgroup), in which CTTAD was measured using the European reference and AIA method, respectively. In AIA subgroups, only 10% of the total daily faecal output was sampled from 9:00 to 9:30 am. Feed analysis in E1 showed that increasing sample quantity from 5 to 9 g did not affect the dietary AIA content; however, the analytical error was 7 and 5 times lower (<em>P</em>&lt;0.05) for 9 g, when compared to 5 and 7 g samples. Feed analysis also showed 1.030±0.003 g TiO<sub>2</sub>/kg diet. Faecal marker recovery was 99.80±0.03 and 96.89±0.16% for AIA and TiO<sub>2</sub>, respectively. The CTTAD of dry matter (DM), did not differ between methods in E1, but a 5-fold higher variability (<em>P</em>&lt;0.05) was observed for the TiO<sub>2</sub> technique in comparison with the ERM and AIA methods. Also, no differences in the CTTAD of DM between the ERM and AIA methods were found in E2. In conclusion, AIA is a reliable internal marker in rabbits and offers the possibility of measuring the CTTAD of diets with precision, when complete faecal collection or feed intake measurement is not possible.</p>

There is increased interest in using sugar beet pulp (SBP) products as forage replacers in equine diets. Previous work (Hyslop et al 1998) has indicated that SBP products may suppress voluntary feed intake (VFI) in ponies when they are the major fibre source at between 550-700 g/kg total diet dry matter (DM). This study examines VFI and apparent digestibility in vivo where soaked unmolassed sugar beet pulp (USBP) was offered as a partial forage replacement to ponies receiving ad libitum grass hay.Four mature Welsh-cross pony geldings (280 kg LW s.e. 6.6) were individually housed and offered 0.86 kg/d of micronised barley (MB) and given ad libitum access to grass hay (HAY). In addition, ponies were offered either 0, 1, 2, or 3 kg/d USBP (U0, U1, U2 and U3 respectively) according to a 4 x 4 latin square changeover experimental design.

Little information is available on digestion of the non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) fraction of fibrous feeds in equines. Two studies were conducted which examined the in vivo apparent digestibilities of proximate constituents and NSP in ponies offered diets based on botanically diverse fibrous foodstuffs.In study 1 (S1), three mature caecally-fistulated Welsh-cross pony geldings (266 kg LW) were used in a 3 x 3 latin square changeover design experiment consisting of three 21 day periods. Ponies were offered 4 kg dry matter (DM) per day of either unmolassed sugar beet pulp (USBP), hay cubes (HC) or a 2:1 mix of oat hulls:naked oats (OHNO) plus minerals in 2 equal meals per day. After completion of S1 the same 3 ponies were used in study 2 (S2) where they were offered 4 kg DM/day of a 50:50 mix of USBP:HC (USHC) plus minerals fed as in S1 for a 21 day period.

AbstractForty days after mating, 16 pregnant sows were randomly allocated to two diets containing either sugar-beet pulp (SBP) or wheat straw (WS) each offered at two levels (1·0 or 1·5 × maintenance energy requirement (M), where M = 460 kJ digestible energy (DE) per kg0·75 per day). Diets were iso-nitrogenous, and contained similar levels of DE together with 260 g non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) per kg dry matter (DM) largely derived from either the SBP or the WS. A 7-day NSP and DM balance was made between day 60 and 100 of gestation. During lactation sows had ad libitum access to a conventional sow diet which contained neither SBP or WS.Outputs of both fresh and dry faeces from sows given diet WS were significantly greater than the outputs from sows given the corresponding SBP diets (P <0·05), and outputs were significantly greater at the higher feeding level for both diets (P < 0·05). There was a tendency for higher urinary outputs from sows given diet WS, but these were variable and not significantly different from those from sows given diet SBP. The apparent digestibility and retention of DM was significantly greater for the SBP diet than for diet WS but were not significantly affected by feeding level. The apparent digestibilities of the total NSP and each of the individual constituent monomers were significantly higher for diet SBP than for diet WS (P < 0·001), but were independent of feeding level (P> 0·05). Xylose was the most poorly digested NSP constituent from both diets. Apparent digestibility coefficients for the remaining NSP constituents in diet SBP were > 0·8 and were > 0·52 in diet WS, with the uronic acids and mannose being the most highly digested NSP fractions from diets SBP and WS respectively.

ABSTRACTSugar-beet pulp as normally produced in Great Britain contains about 400 g molasses per kg dry matter (DM). It has been demonstrated that either a reduction in the amount or even the full removal of the molasses did not affect the yield or composition of the milk of cows (e.g. Ronning and Bath, 1962; Hemingway, Parkins and Fraser, 1986). The dried, shredded pulp without molasses was, however, generally less palatable.

This study deals with effects of pressing of ensiled sugar-beet pulp and of application of a chemical preservative on the quality of fermentation process. The experimental silages had a better sensory evaluation than the control ones. In silages treated chemically with a mixture of acids, statistically significantly (P &lt; 0.01) higher dry matter content, lowest pH value, the value of lactic acid and the lowest content of all acids in dry matter were found after 180 days of storage from the beginning of the experiment. The statistically significantly (P &lt; 0.01) highest lactic acid content (43.39 &plusmn; 1.25 g/kg DM) was determined in the control pressed silage. The highest LA/VFA ratio (1.40 &plusmn; 0.18) was calculated for non-pressed experimental silage (D &ndash; 3 l/t of KEM). As compared with untreated control the highest percentage (P &lt; 0.01) of lactic acid and of all fermentation acids was found out in silage D treated with 3 l/t of KEM (58.18 &plusmn; 0.47 g/kg DM). Undesirable butyric and propionic acids were not found in chemically treated silage samples (C, D, E, F). However, the highest (P &lt; 0.01) contents of butyric acid (26.37 &plusmn; 0.91 g/DM) and propionic acid (4.58 &plusmn; 0.78 g/DM) were measured in untreated non-pressed silage samples (B). The highest (P &lt; 0.01) contents of acetic acid and ethanol were found in control silage samples. The quality of these silages was evaluated as very low. &nbsp;

SUMMARYTwo 16-week experiments with lactating Ayrshire cows were conducted to study the effect on milk production of replacing barley with dried molassed sugar-beet pulp on an equal dry-matter basis. The cows on all treatments received equal weights of hay, groundnut cake and minerals but the contents of barley and of sugar-beet pulp each varied from 0 to 80% in the different concentrate mixtures. The total daily intake of dry matter expressed as a percentage of live weight averaged 2·64 and 2·72 in the two experiments.The average yield of milk in the two experiments was 18·8 kg/cow per day, and, within each experiment, the mean yields of milk and the contents of solids-not-fat and crude protein were not significantly different on the contrasting feeding treatments. The intake of water was significantly increased as the dried beet pulp replaced the barley but no major changes occurred in the proportions of V.F.A.S in the rumen liquor.It is concluded that barley and dried molassed sugar-beet pulp had the same feeding value on a dry-matter basis when used in the production ration of milking cows. It is suggested that for most purposes barley and dried sugar-beet pulp are interchangeable on an equal weight basis, but for more precise feeding the two feeds should replace each other on an equal dry-weight basis.

Results from three previous experiments with finishing cattle on an 18-month beef system indicate that the major increases in daily live-weight gain (DLG) occur within the first 50 to 60 days of supplementation with fish meal. Hence, it may be possible to remove fish meal from the diet after the initial two months of the finishing winter without any subsequent effect on animal performance.For the last nine weeks at grass the experimental cattle were given 1.4-kg/head/day dried sugar beet pulp nuts. On housing this allowance was increased to 3.0 kg and the 48 British Friesian steers were offered grass silage ad libitum (round bale silage for one week and precision-chopped clamp silage thereafter). The 3.0-kg dried sugar beet pulp was given for five days and after a 10-day changeover period the nuts were replaced by 15-kg potatoes. Cattle were offered the basal diet of precision-chopped silage and potatoes for 12 days before starting the experiment.Steers were implanted with 300-mg trenbolone acetate (Finaplix, Hoechst UK Ltd, Milton Keynes) and 36-mg zeranol (Ralgro, Crown Chemical Company Ltd, Lamberhurst) 20 days before randomisation.

Silage effluent represents a potential pollutant and a loss of ensiled nutrients. An absorbent provides the possibility of absorbing effluent, aiding fermentation and increasing the feeding value of the silage. Sugar beet pulp (SBP) nuts and rolled barley (RB) were evaluated as absorbents with direct cut grass silage.Perennial ryegrass swards of 222 g/kg average dry matter were direct cut between 10 and 12 July 1989. Grass was ensiled with the following rates of absorbent per tonne of fresh material:1.20 kg SBP (S20).2.40 kg SBP (S40).3.40 kg RB (B40).4.Untreated (U).Production of silage effluent was measured with a tippler mechanism attached to an electronic logger and recorded daily until 22 September. The silages were individually fed through Calan Broadbent doors to 48 x 12 month old Friesian steers between 24 October and 19 December.
