ABSTRACT Odontomes show no gender predilection, and are most often diagnosed in the second decade of life. They are preferentially located in the upper maxilla, particularly in the anterior sector. Compound odontome are more prevalent than complex odontome, and show no predilection in terms of patient gender, age or location. We hereby report a case of large compound odontome in the mandibular angle region of a 55- year-old woman. Most such lesions are asymptomatic and constitute casual findings in X-ray studies indicated for other reasons. The most common clinical manifestations are absence of impacted teeth and the presence of a tumor. Treatment consists of surgical removal of the lesion. The prognosis is very good, with a scant tendency towards relapse.

ABSTRACT The most common odontogenic tumor is odontoma comprising 22% of all the cases. They show no gender predilection, are most often diagnosed in the second decade of life. They are preferentially located in the upper maxilla, particularly in the anterior sector. These are of two types complex and compound. Complex odontoma is a less prevalent than compound (1:2). Their apparent eruption in the oral cavity is rare. We hereby report a rare case of complex odontoma (intraosseous type) associated with impacted lower permanent second molar. These lesions are mostly asymptomatic and constitute casual finding on X-ray indicated for other reasons. The most common clinical manifestation is absence of impacted tooth and the presence of tumor. Treatment consists of surgical removal of tumor with impacted tooth. The treatment of patients with neuroblastoma does not lie solely in the province of a single specialty; it requires cooperation of pediatrician, surgeon, radiologist and tumor therapist. It is essential that they all be aware of the unique characteristics of this particular tumor if optimum results are to be obtained. The many factors found to influence the prognosis for a child with neuroblastoma are discussed. In those cases wherein there are no demonstrable metastases, the treatment of choice consists of total excision, followed by local x-ray irradiation; this has resulted in a cure rate of 88%. In those cases wherein total excision is not possible, partial surgical removal followed by x-ray irradiation and tumor chemotherapy has given a cure rate of 64%. In those cases where only biopsy has been performed, x-ray irradiation and chemotherapy has still given a salvage, with a cure rate of 38%. When there are metastases to the liver alone, about two-thirds of babies can be cured by x-ray therapy. Whenever bony metastases have appeared in any case, the prognosis is extremely poor, and it is rare for such an individual to survive, regardless of the form of therapy. An aggressive attack on neuroblastoma in infancy and childhood, combining sungeny, x-ray irradiation and tumor chemotherapy, has shown a progressive improvement in results. During the period 1950-1957, cure rates have risen to 36.7% for all patients entering the hospital, regardless of age of the patient on extent of the neoplasm. For babies under a year of age, cures have occurred in 56%, and if there were no demonstrable metastases to bone at the time of hospitalization, the cures have been 70%.

✓ The authors review 17 cases of aqueductal stenosis in adults and describe five modes of clinical presentation. The average duration of symptoms was 6 years. Dementia was infrequent. Skull x-ray films frequently demonstrated some degree of cranial enlargement and signs of chronic increased intracranial pressure. Characteristic alterations of the sella included elongation of the anterior wall and flattening, erosion, and anterior displacement of the dorsum. Aqueductal configurations as defined by ventriculography and pneumoencephalography in all cases, and the angiographic findings in seven cases are described. Most of the patients improved substantially after shunt insertion. The clinical findings suggested that aqueductal narrowing and associated hydrocephalus had been present in most of these patients since early life.

In X-ray macromolecular crystallography, cryoprotection of crystals mounted on harvesting loops is achieved when the water in the sample solvent transitions to vitreous ice before crystalline ice forms. This is achieved by rapid cooling in liquid nitrogen or propane. Protocols for protein crystal cryoprotection are based on either increasing environmental pressure or reducing the water fraction in the solvent. This study presents a new protocol for cryoprotecting crystals. It is based on vapour diffusion dehydration of the crystal drop to reduce the water fraction in the solvent by adding a highly concentrated salt solution, 13 M potassium formate (KF13), directly to the reservoir. Cryoprotection by the KF13 protocol is non-invasive to the crystal, high throughput, not labour intensive, can benefit diffraction resolution and ligand binding, and is very useful in cases with high redundancy such as drug discovery projects which utilize very large compound or fragment libraries. Moreover, an application of KF13 to discover new crystal hits from clear drops of equilibrated crystallization screening plates is also shown.

Gnathostomiasis is an extraintestinal infection with larval or immature nematodes of the genus Gnathostoma (order Spirurida), the most common mode of human infection being consumption of undercooked freshwater fish. Clinical manifestations include recurrent cutaneous migratory swellings (common), creeping eruption (rare), and neurological deficits (occasional). Definitive diagnosis is by identification of the worm in surgical specimens; serological testing for antibody against gnathostoma antigen can confirm a presumptive diagnosis. Treatment of choice is albendazole or if possible, surgical removal of the worm in accessible areas and when the parasite can be located. Prevention is by avoiding all dishes that contain raw or poorly cooked flesh of animals or fish in or imported from endemic areas....

Conventional photodynamic therapy (PDT) is limited by its penetration depth due to the photosensitizer and light source. In this study, we developed X-ray induced photodynamic therapy that applied X-ray as the light source to activate Ce-doped CaCO3 (CaCO3:Ce) to generate an intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) for killing cancer cells. The A549 cell line was used as the in vitro and in vivo model to evaluate the efficacy of X-ray-induced CaCO3:Ce. The cell viability significantly decreased and cell cytotoxicity obviously increased with CaCO3:Ce exposure under X-ray irradiation, which is less harmful than radiotherapy in tumor treatment. CaCO3:Ce produced significant ROS under X-ray irradiation and promoted A549 cancer cell death. CaCO3:Ce can enhance the efficacy of X-ray induced PDT, and tumor growth was inhibited in vivo. The blood analysis and hematoxylin and eosin stain (H&E) stain fully supported the safety of the treatment. The mechanisms underlying ROS and CO2 generation by CaCO3:Ce activated by X-ray irradiation to induce cell toxicity, thereby inhibiting tumor growth, is discussed. These findings and advances are of great importance in providing a novel therapeutic approach as an alternative tumor treatment.

Loiasis is a filarial disease transmitted by the Chrysops spp. tabanid flies in West and Central Africa. It is most commonly diagnosed by the clinical manifestations of Calabar swellings (transient localized inflammatory edema) or, most dramatically, by the appearance of a migrating worm through the conjunctival tissues or the bridge of the nose. We report the case of a 35-year-old resident in the city of Rio de Janeiro who displayed a moving Loa loa in the bulbar conjunctival tissue two years after returning from a six-month trip to Uganda. Surgical removal of the worm was performed.

Abstract Cardiac myxoma is the most common benign cardiac tumor with diverse nonspecific clinical manifestations; moreover, atrial myxoma embolization to the peripheral vessels is rare. A 24-year-old man presented tothe emergency departement complaining ofpain and coldness of his two lower extremities. The right femoral pulse was normally felt while the pulses of the left lower limb from the femoral down to the posterior and anterior tibial arteries were not felt. Bilateral thrombectomy was performed on emergency basisand a fatty-like mass from the left femoral artery was removed. The histological examination of this mass was suggestive of myxoma.So, transthoracic echocardiography was done and confirmed the diagnosis of myxoma that was seen in the left atrium and measuring about 10X6 cm in its maximal dimensions. Surgical removal of the myxoma was done later and the patient recovered uneventfully. Conclusion Although myxomas are rare, they should be considered in the differential diagnosis of peripheral embolic disease, especially when an embolic event occurs in a young adult without evidence of endocarditis or arrhythmia. Echocardiography is the modality of choice for diagnosis and follow-up of this type of tumors. Purpose: To investigate the effectiveness of autologous cells of stromal vascular fraction of adipose tissue in severe local radiation skin injuries after the exposure of rats to X-rays. Material and methods: Experiments were performed on Wistar rats, weighing 200–230 g. Rats were exposed locally in iliolumbar region using X-ray machine LNC-268 (RAP 100-10) at a dose of 110 Gy (30 kV tube voltage, current 6.1 mA, thick Al filter 0.1 mm), dose rate: 17.34 Gy/min. Area of the irradiation field was 8.2–8.5 cm2. Transplantation of autologous cells of stromal vascular fraction (SVFC) of adipose tissue was carried out on 21st or 35th days after irradiation. SVFC isolation was performed by means of enzymatic treatment of adipose tissue. SVFC suspension was administered subcutaneously at a dose of 1×106 cells per injection around the radiation ulcers.The severity of radiation damage to the skin and the effects of cellular therapy were evaluated in the dynamics of clinical manifestations, with the help of plane geometry and pathomorphometry. Results: It was found that by the 17–25th day after irradiation radiation ulcers were formedon rat skin. In the control group of animalsulcers persisted throughout the observation period of more than 3 months. The area of ulcers was 1,87 ± 0,35 cm2 and 1.52 ± 0.24 cm2 at 83th and 90th days after irradiation, respectively. In animals of the experimental group, with autologous stromal vascular fraction of adipose tissue, was significant decrease in ulceration the area in comparison to control animals. In 80 % of the rats treated with SVFC on 21st day after exposure, to the 90th day after irradiation complete healing of ulcers occurred with the formation of atrophic scar at the site of radiation injuries. These clinical observations and planimetric were correlated with the results of histomorphometry. Conclusion: Transplantation autologous SVFC of adipose tissue contributes to accelerate the healing of radiation ulcers after local x-ray exposure in the experiment, indicating that the prospects of using adipose tissue cell products for the treatment of severe local radiation injuries.

Cardiac myxomas are the most common primary cardiac tumors. Myxoma are more common in women. Clinical manifestations can mimic many cardiac and noncardiac conditions. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is the gold standard method in the diagnosis of cardiac myxoma. The management of cardiac myxoma are medical therapy for the treatment of associated conditions and surgical removal as the definitive treatment.
