Economische sectoren als landbouw, transport en industrie staan voor de opgave om te verduurzamen. Deze opgave zorgt voor andere banen en stelt andere eisen aan mensen die werkzaam zijn in deze sectoren. In dit artikel verkennen we de vraagstukken rond werk, vakmanschap en oudere werknemers die ontstaan vanwege deze transitie, en de rol die HR hierin speelt. Om hier inzicht in te krijgen, deden we een jaar lang onderzoek bij een groot industrieel bedrijf, waar we spraken met vakmensen, HR-medewerkers en leidinggevenden over de gevolgen voor het werk van de transitie van grijze naar groene productiemethoden. In deze casus bleek dat de schoksgewijs verlopende transitie het vakmanschap van (oudere) werknemers onder druk zet. De onzekerheid die de transitie voor de komende jaren met zich meebrengt leidt op organisatieniveau tot spanningsvelden. HR zou de eigen rol kunnen invullen door de concretisering van de duurzame productie in de toekomst samen met de werknemers en de leidinggevenden proactief vorm te geven.Economic sectors like agriculture, transport and industry face the challenge to become more sustainable. This challenge impacts the jobs available and changes the skills which people need to work in those sectors. In this article, we explore questions concerning work, craftmanship and older employees which arise because of this transition as well as the potential role of HR in addressing these questions. In order to gain insight in these questions, we conducted research for over a year in a large industrial company, during which we spoke with craftsmen, HR professionals and managers. We spoke with them about the consequences of the transition to more sustainable production methods, now and in the near future. In this case, it became clear that the transition puts pressure on the craftmanship of employees, especially the older employees. The insecurity that emerged as a result of the transition also leads to various tensions on the organizational level. HR could play an important role by proactively shaping the concretization of the envisioned sustainable future of the company together with the craftsmen and the managers.

Potential Role of Cytokines in Children with Acute Appendicitis and Acute Mesenteric Lymphadenitis Although, AAP and AML have different etiological factors, clinical symptoms are very much similar but treatment tactics in both the disease differ a lot. In case of AML, treatment is more conservative and does not require hospitalization while in case of AAP immediate hospitalization and maybe further surgery can be mandatory. With the identification of group of cytokines serum inflammatory mediators IL-8, IL-10, IL-12[p70], IL-17, TNF-a and MCP-1, it is believed early and proper diagnosis of AAP in the near future. Research of cytokines-serum inflammatory mediators has opened new opportunities for an early detection and differentiation of these two diseases in children.

Production methods transform social structures, including the economy. In the societies that are shaped by old production methods, the existence of those people who earn their living working through these methods will be destroyed altogether and their lives will be harder than they used to be, which will lead to conflicts. It is true that changes make transformations inevitable Labor in the agriculture society was a very important production factor. In the industrial society, on the other hand, workers will serve their labor for the needs of people with a huge capital rather than serving their own ends, which make union action all the same very important. It is true that the potential role of labor as a vital component of the production has been weakened in the industrial societies. The reason for this is that there are now millions of people who can easily replace others in industrial societies. For this reason, the laborers who have faced huge challenges against the capital in this framework started to initiate union action in order to protect their rights. The function or the roles of union actions to have appeared in the industrial societies have changed when faced with information society in the 21.century. Information society forced unions towards change in union actions. Today, there is need for unionists to agree on a new road map in the 21.century for union organizations and activities.

Aims and Background The quinazoline folate analog thymidylate synthase inhibitor, Tomudex, is about to enter the Italian pharmaceutical market. Its place among the therapeutic options for advanced colorectal cancer is discussed. Methods The pros and cons of currently available chemotherapeutic regimens are briefly described with special attention to patient's and tumor's determinants of treatment outcome. The mechanism of action and the results of phase I, II and III studies of Tomudex are reviewed. Results Not all patients need to be treated. Guidelines are given in this respect. Tomudex at the dose of 3 mg/m2 given i.v. every three weeks has antitumor activity similar to that of currently available regimens, with a favorable toxicity profile. Conclusions Current research approaches are unlikely to dramatically improve the treatment outcome of this disease in the near future. What can reasonably be expected is less toxicity and more convenient routes and schedules of drug administration that may translate into better quality of life for our patients. Tomudex has been devised along these lines.

The purpose of this article is to define the potential role unions can play in a general quest for improved practice in an industrial company. Workplace innovation (WPI) is one example of such a measure. Lean is another. The article outlines important elements when implementing improvement tools like Workplace Innovation and Lean practice. The efforts are focused at company level, and experiences from a Norwegian industrial company highlight the areas of importance. The amplifying role a union can play in an improvement process is discussed, and motives and processes are clarified, in order to show the role of unions in a broader sense. The “Nordic” tradition of organising work-life frames the considerations made in this paper, but elements of experience can also be valuable in other work-life traditions. Practical improvement is the ultimate goal in an improvement project, and this article shows how unions can play an active part and amplify the results when it comes to enhancing organisational performance. Theories and experiences are supported by interviews with experienced leaders and employee representatives. Changes are often met with resistance, and the article shows that unions, under certain circumstances, can play a facilitative role when it comes to the implementation of improved practice. Joint motives provide a unique opportunity to succeed, and Workplace Innovation and other improvement measures can represent a “win – win” formula in that sense. A democratic and dialogical approach towards Work Life design contributes to both efficiency and stimulating workplaces through Workplace Innovation and Lean Management.

Like many other political actors, the radical right is currently expanding beyond national borders, creating cross-national links and establishing international cooperation. To date, however, in sociology and political science there are few empirical analyses on the topic. This chapter aims to fill this gap by providing an overview of some scholarship (coming from social movement studies, history, sociology, and research on political parties) on the contemporary radical right, looking first of all at the level of contextual macro variables—that is, at the political opportunities European integration provides for the transnationalization of the radical right. Second, it suggests that another important mechanism (at the meso organizational level) for the development of cross-national radical right links and cooperation is the use of frames. Third, it considers the potential role of the Internet for the transnationalization of the current radical right.

Glaciers and ice sheets are a peculiar biome with characteristic abiotic and biotic components. Mountain glaciers are predicted to decrease their volume and even to melt away within a few decades. Despite the threat of a disappearing biome, the diversity and the role of microscopic animals as consumers at higher trophic levels in the glacial biome still remain largely unknown. In this study, we report data on tardigrades and rotifers found in glacial mosses on Mount Stanley, Uganda, and describe a new tardigrade species. Adropion afroglacialis sp. nov. differs from the most similar species by having granulation on the cuticle, absence of cuticular bars under the claws, and a different macroplacoid length sequence. We also provide a morphological diagnosis for another unknown tardigrade species of the genus Hypsibius. The rotifers belonged to the families Philodinidae and Habrotrochidae. In addition, we discuss the diversity of microinvertebrates and potential role of tardigrades and rotifers on mountain glaciers as top consumers. As for any organism living apparently exclusively in glacial habitats on tropical glaciers, their extinction in the near future is inevitable, possibly before we can even discover their existence.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating relationship between organizational culture, informal learning and work engagement of older workers in a public organizational setting. More specifically, this study aimed to investigate if informal learning is a pivotal component connecting an organizational-level factor (culture) to work engagement, which, in turn, directly influences business performance in the workplace. Design/methodology/approach After a careful review of the selected and relevant literature, four hypotheses were developed to test the structural relationships between the selected variables. Findings The data analysis indicated that informal learning mediated the relationship between organizational culture and work engagement for older employees working in a public organizational setting. Practical implications The findings from this study provide a solid justification for promoting informal learning in organizations to ensure knowledge transfer between younger and older generations while minimizing knowledge and financial loss for organizations. Originality/value In previous research, little emphasis has been placed on the impact of informal learning on work engagement. This study presents a valuable finding about the role of informal learning to facilitate work engagement for older workers.

A key component of sustainable welfare policy is the extension of working life (EWL). Currently this aim is chiefly pursued by financial policies, neglecting the potential role of quality of working life (QWL) in attracting people to remain employed. National survey data for Britain in the years 1992, 2006 and 2012 demonstrate deteriorating overall job attitude among older employees, following the changed competitive and technological conditions of the 1990s. The investigation goes on to diagnose aspects of the work situation implicated in adverse experience of work among older employees. Work demands and the nature of work emerge as key areas of discontent, with additional evidence of insecurity, and dissatisfaction with pensions, emerging over the recent recession. Policies potentially addressing QWL, with particular attention to the role of employers, are reviewed in the conclusion.

Abstract The Popeye domain-containing gene family encodes a novel class of cAMP effector proteins in striated muscle tissue. In this short review, we first introduce the protein family and discuss their structure and function with an emphasis on their role in cyclic AMP signalling. Another focus of this review is the recently discovered role of POPDC genes as striated muscle disease genes, which have been associated with cardiac arrhythmia and muscular dystrophy. The pathological phenotypes observed in patients will be compared with phenotypes present in null and knockin mutations in zebrafish and mouse. A number of protein–protein interaction partners have been discovered and the potential role of POPDC proteins to control the subcellular localization and function of these interacting proteins will be discussed. Finally, we outline several areas, where research is urgently needed.

Abstract Despite the tremendous progress made in recent years in assembling the human genome, tandemly repeated DNA elements remain poorly characterized. These sequences account for the vast majority of methylated sites in the human genome and their methylated state is necessary for this repetitive DNA to function properly and to maintain genome integrity. Furthermore, recent advances highlight the emerging role of these sequences in regulating the functions of the human genome and its variability during evolution, among individuals, or in disease susceptibility. In addition, a number of inherited rare diseases are directly linked to the alteration of some of these repetitive DNA sequences, either through changes in the organization or size of the tandem repeat arrays or through mutations in genes encoding chromatin modifiers involved in the epigenetic regulation of these elements. Although largely overlooked so far in the functional annotation of the human genome, satellite elements play key roles in its architectural and topological organization. This includes functions as boundary elements delimitating functional domains or assembly of repressive nuclear compartments, with local or distal impact on gene expression. Thus, the consideration of satellite repeats organization and their associated epigenetic landmarks, including DNA methylation (DNAme), will become unavoidable in the near future to fully decipher human phenotypes and associated diseases.
